Make A Difference Connecting Passion + Purpose

Christi Hegstad November 19th, 2019

Have you ever helped a child learn to read? Little compares to watching them light up when they can sound out words on their own, or seeing their independence grow right along with their reading proficiency. Hearing them read an entire book all by themselves is like witnessing someone’s confidence grow right before your very eyes!

It warms my heart just thinking about it, but supporting literacy does much more than that: People with proficient reading skills are more likely to be employed and contributing to our economic development, and less likely to be in jail or on welfare.* Reading is a fundamental skill that truly changes lives.

I am thrilled that a portion of the proceeds from each Iowa 2020 ASPIRE Success Club enrollment will support Everybody Wins! Iowa (EWI), an organization with a mission to “increase children’s success in school and life through one-to-one reading and mentoring experiences with caring volunteers.” I recently met with executive director Karen Ligas (pictured with me here) who shared story after story of such life-changing experiences – for both kiddos *and* mentors! During FY19, EWI served nearly 1,000 students, helping them grow – as readers and in other ways, too – through positive, consistent partnerships.

ASPIRE members are passionate about growth and helping others grow, plus reading is part of our curriculum, so this is a beautifully aligned connection! And for our members joining outside of Iowa, a portion of proceeds from your enrollments will support Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, another phenomenal literacy organization.

If you’d like to enroll in the ASPIRE Success Club, visit ChristiHegstad.com/products/aspire-success-club today – enrollment closes on November 30! And if you’d like to learn more about EWI, including volunteer opportunities and other ways to support their literacy efforts, visit EverybodyWinsIowa.org.

Make Yourself A Champion

“When it comes to our time, we should stop worrying
about the outcomes we can’t control and instead focus on the inputs we can.”
Nir Eyal

It probably comes as no surprise that I am a big fan of goals. By envisioning what could be, connecting with our purpose, and creating a plan for achievement, we focus our energy more directly on what matters to us.

One of the trickiest balancing acts with goals, however, is envisioning the ideal outcome – but not clinging to it.

Last week, many of our ASPIRE Success Club members shared the status of their 2019 Bold Goal, which they each set at the start of the year. This is honestly one of my favorite times of the year, hearing how their consistent actions and healthy risks and ‘seed planting’ throughout the year has led them to their goal – or something better / different / delightfully surprising!

This week, focus on doing the work.

We have 6 weeks remaining in 2019. Instead of expending a bunch of energy worrying if you will reach your year-end goals, focus that energy on taking the daily actions – the ‘inputs,’ as Eyal calls them.

You might also choose to upgrade those actions – reaching out to ten people each day instead of five, or writing 1,000 words per day rather than 500, for example.

As they say, the champion isn’t made on game day – she or he is made in the trainings, practices, and dedicated actions leading up to that grand finale. Hold your vision high, and then focus on what you can control: Taking the consistent, focused, results-oriented actions that will move you forward!

Two Unexpected Ways To Leverage Your HABITS

Christi Hegstad November 12th, 2019
Imagine if every time you got in the car, you had to pause and decide whether or not to buckle your seatbelt.
Or if every morning before work, you had to stop for a few moments and debate with yourself whether or not to brush your teeth.
Thank goodness for helpful habits, otherwise our brains would be exhausted by 8am!
Habits serve a powerful purpose in our lives. “A daily routine built on good habits and disciplines,” Darren Hardy claims, “separates the most successful among us from everyone else.”
On the flip side, unhelpful habits can derail us like nothing else.
Routine Good Habits Hardy
Due to your requests, I promised to focus this month’s newsletter on habits. We could go any number of directions with this expansive topic: how to break bad habits, how to build and sustain purposeful new ones, how long it actually takes to form a habit, what role if any willpower plays, and on and on.
In an effort to keep this article under 80,000 words, however, I will focus on two fundamental aspects that could completely change your relationship with habits going forward.
(Plus, we’ll be focusing on all those other aspects in the 2020 ASPIRE Success Club, so be sure to join us if you haven’t already!)
success
#1: THE FOUNDATION
One obstacle I often personally encounter when attempting to develop a habit is an inherent sense of overwhelm. If I strive to become healthier, for example, I can easily create a laundry list of habits from exercise to nutrition to sleep to water consumption to stress management to …
Whew, my energy feels depleted just writing about it!
And with my all-or-nothing tendencies, I can easily veer toward ‘nothing’ in an instance like this. Anyone else?
Fortunately, there’s a middle ground: The keystone habit.
“Keystone habits say that success doesn’t depend on getting every single thing right,” Charles Duhigg writes in The Power of Habit, “but instead relies on identifying a few key priorities and fashioning them into powerful levers.”
Think of this like a ripple effect for habits: Focus on one that, when implemented, positively impacts others at the same time, often seemingly without any additional effort on your part.
Let’s go back to my health example for a moment. Instead of trying to develop new habits in all of those different areas, exercise might become my keystone habit. When I exercise regularly, I tend to sleep better, make higher-quality food choices, and drink more water, for instance. Focusing on one such habit can simplify my actions and compound my results.
What area of your work or life are you looking to elevate? What could serve as your keystone habit?

#2: THE HIDDEN FACTOR

Another element in successful habit development is one you may not think about but could truly make the difference:
The element of belief.
You need to believe you can sustain a habit in order for that to actually occur.
“For a habit to stay changed,” Duhigg explains, “people must believe change is possible. And most often, that belief only emerges with the help of a group.”
I have seen evidence of this time and time again in the ASPIRE Success Club: Whether reporting back to the group or with their one-on-one accountability partner, members frequently share how they have attempted unsuccessfully for years to stick with a habit – then, a few months into ASPIRE, they’ve made it happen.
Surrounding yourself with those who support you, want you to succeed, and believe in you – sometimes even more than you believe in yourself – changes everything.
What group will support you in sustaining your new habit?

YOUR NEXT INSPIRED ACTION

How will you take this article and apply it to your work and/or life? A few ideas:
1. Uncover your keystone habit and begin there.
2. Look to past habits you have successfully developed to remind you that you can do the same here, too. (Believe!)
3. Enlist the support of a group.
Feel free to share your next action step on Instagram or Facebook! I am rooting for you and your positive, purposeful habits!

What To Do TODAY To Build A Brilliant TOMORROW

Christi Hegstad November 10th, 2019
If I waved a magic wand over you that made the next year go beautifully, what would be different for you a year from now?
What could you do now that would begin to ensure that outcome?
I used to wait until the start of a new week to begin an exercise program, or until the start of a new month to make changes to my budget. What I’ve learned, however, is that is like waiting until the announcer yells “GO!” before stepping up to the starting line.
Always starting just a smidge behind.
This week, build your ideal future by beginning today.
Start mapping out your 2020 goals today, rather than waiting until the end of the year.
Start lining up your personal and professional development for next year today, rather than waiting until programs are full or coaches no longer have space for new clients. (Check out the ASPIRE Success Club before enrollment closes on Nov 30!)
Start exercising today, or changing your budget today, or taking steps in the direction of your dream today, rather than waiting until that elusive ‘perfect time.’
Your future self will thank you!

How To Know You’re Heading In The Right Direction

Christi Hegstad November 9th, 2019

“I won’t always know where I’m going – but I can always know whether I’m going in the right direction.”

Bill Burnett + Dave Evans

How do you feel about this statement?

When I first read it in their excellent book, Designing Your Life, I’ll admit – it didn’t sit well with me. I want to know where I’m going *and* that I’m going in the right direction. I also like to know the route in advance, the amount of time it will take, what playlist or podcast I’ll have going…

I like to pretend I’m in control, I guess. ?

But the more I sat with this statement, the more I remembered that the direction, and the journey itself, guide us just as much as the destination. We can (and I definitely encourage you to) have a clear vision for our work and life. We can have meaningful Bold Goals and detailed action plans and checkpoints along the way.

And still, life will throw us some curveballs that we will need to decide, in the moment, how best to navigate.

How do we head in the right direction if plans change unexpectedly?

We check in with our purpose. We touch base with the people who know our hearts. We make decisions in favor of our core values and desired future rather than on current trends or past mistakes or what everyone else is doing.

If you’re in a season of uncertainty, check in with yourself. Get clear on who you are and what matters most. And trust that even though the path may seem unclear, if you are following your values and honoring your purpose, you are heading in the right direction. ??

Making Big Dreams And Bold Goals A Reality

Christi Hegstad November 4th, 2019

Kim Fankhauser is, in so many ways, like a beautiful fairy godmother you feel so fortunate to have in your life! Tell her a problem, she’ll help you solve it. Tell her you’re scared, she’ll share some of her courage with you. Tell her your dream, she’ll inspire you to make it real.

As one of our longtime members of the ASPIRE Success Club, Kim has modeled our Big Dreams, Bold Goals philosophy in countless ways. So far during her ASPIRE tenure she has:

* Gone swimming with dolphins
* Helped build a library in Cameroon, Africa
* Volunteered to rock sweet babies in the hospital
* Traveled to Norway
* Learned to make wine
* Decluttered her home and put it on the market

And that’s just for starters!

Kim F + Christi H ASPIRE 2019

When I asked Kim recently what keeps her coming back to ASPIRE year after year, she had much to share, including this: “It’s great to dream, but even better to be surrounded by those who believe in your dreams, too. ASPIRE is the best thing I have ever done for myself!”

Let Kim’s example inspire you to dream big and take positive action in your life, too! Better yet, join the 2020 ASPIRE Success Club and gain inspiration from her and other extraordinary women all year long! Worldwide enrollment is now open (for a limited time!) and you can find details, testimonials, and more at https://christihegstad.com/products/aspire-success-club/ !

How To Engage In Meaningful Work

Christi Hegstad November 3rd, 2019
“It’s not enough just to get things done.
You have to help people do more of the work
 that has impact and meaning.”
Michael Bungay Stanier

How meaningful is your work? How purposeful are your daily actions?

I once worked with a client who began by calling himself a ‘desk jockey,’ saying he only entered data and pushed papers and handled unhappy phone calls. “Not much meaning in that,” he shared.

By the end of our work together, however, he was no longer calling himself a desk jockey – but rather someone whose work saves lives.

No, he did not switch careers, organizations, or even most of his tasks.

What he did switch was the meaning and purpose he brought to, and sought from, the work. He connected to the bigger picture, saw the ripple effect he set in motion, and realized he – like every one of us – makes a difference.

This week, connect your work to the bigger picture.

You can go about this in a couple of ways:

First, consider – in detail – the potential ripple effect of what you do. Maybe you help an unhappy customer find a resolution, and maybe she then returns to work in a more positive and solution-oriented mood as a result, and maybe she helps a coworker solve a problem, and maybe that coworker goes home and speaks more gently to his family … on and on and on.

Never underestimate the power of your ripple effect!

The second way: Simply decide that your work is meaningful. Then set about finding the evidence and creating the ways to prove that decision true.

The ASPIRE Success Club will be delving into topics like this next year, and enrollment is now open – but only for a few weeks! Click here to join us!

Leading With Joy And Contentment

Christi Hegstad November 1st, 2019

Do you easily say ‘no’ to things that don’t fulfill your bigger ‘yes’?

The topic of priorities can be confusing: Do we focus on daily priorities or life. priorities? How do we actually schedule priorities when our calendars are already so full? What about the unexpected things that pop up on any (every) given day?

Lots of things in life are important. But they can’t all be equally important, all at the same time, and still allow us to live with a sense of meaning and purpose.

This week, clarify your bigger ‘yes’.

When you know your top priorities, you can much more easily design your life around them, regardless of how busy your schedule might be.

You can confidently say ‘no’ to things without experiencing FOMO (fear of missing out).

You can wake up focused and go to bed fulfilled, knowing you’ve intentionally put first things first.

Experience the joy and contentment that comes with deciding what matters most and honoring that. If you need help, join us in the ASPIRE Success Club (enrollment open Nov 1 – 30!) or contact me about coaching!

10 Ways To Step Up Your Motivation

Christi Hegstad October 22nd, 2019

Last week my daughter, Brittany, ran the Chicago Marathon – an incredible test of endurance, both physical and mental. You have to have high levels of motivation to complete a feat like that, am I right?

And that motivation isn’t just a one-time deal on race day, either. Months of preparation, training, and recommitting to the goal are required – just like with other Bold Goals we set for ourselves. Surely you can expect some “I just don’t feel like it” days now and then.

What do you do on those days? What if those days turn into weeks?

As I’ve shared many times before, definitely surround yourself with support and reach out for help. In addition, the following ten ideas can provide lasting and repeatable sources of motivation whether your goal involves a marathon, a business, a home project, or virtually anything else!

Marathon, black silhouettes of runners on the sunset

1. Recall a peak experience.
When did you achieve an important goal, complete a significant project, or truly feel ‘in the zone’? Call to mind a moment from your past that had you feeling on top of the world, then tease it apart for clues that you can apply to your current goal. This works especially well if you sometimes lost motivation or felt adrift with that earlier event, too.
2. Ask forward-moving questions.
The quality of our answers – and ultimately, our behaviors – depends on the quality of our questions. Ask yourself powerful ones! For example: “How can I infuse new life into this goal / role?” or “What is one thing I can do in the next 24 hours to boost my motivation?” Looking at #1 above, you might ask, “What helped me persevere when things got difficult back then?”
3. Clarify your focus.
Decreased motivation often accompanies increased scattered-ness. Locke & Latham, pioneering researchers in goal-setting motivation, repeatedly discussed the importance of clarity and specificity with goals. Step back, take an honest look at where you are investing your time and energy, and – like a laser – narrow your focus to intensify your results.

overcome the obstacles of your life, hurdle design

4. Stay in your own lane.
Comparing yourself to others is now easier than ever, yet Teddy Roosevelt’s words still ring true: It robs us of joy. Instead of wishing you had what someone else has, send them blessings and let their example serve as inspiration: “If they can do it, so can I!”
5. Do something for the first time.
It’s possible you’ve fallen into a bit of a rut. Try a new activity and let the excitement of learning something new – as well as perhaps the push out of your comfort zone – prompt your motivation in other areas. And don’t worry about doing the new thing perfectly – that’s definitely not a requirement!

6. Find perspective.

You might find perspective by focusing on your next step instead of all the miles you have yet to run. Or in taking an eagle’s view of what you’re aiming for; my doctorate took several years to earn, for example, but in the grand scope of my lifetime, that’s a mere blip. A little perspective can go a long way.

Why Purpose Reason Definition

7. Know your ‘why’ and revisit it often.

In the process of training for and running the marathon, Brittany raised a ton of funds and support for children with cancer. “Doing it for a cause greater than myself was a huge motivator!” she told me. Whether it’s your driving purpose for a particular goal and/or for your overall life, reconnect with your ‘why’ frequently and fully.

8. Pour into others.

It’s funny how you can massively boost your own motivation by helping others boost theirs! Volunteer, encourage, support, teach, empower … find ways to help others get motivated, and watch what happens to your own motivation in the process.

Should Would Could Did card with colorful background

9. Imagine your own advice.

If you feel low on motivation or discouraged at your progress, imagine your child, best friend, or valued employee coming to you for advice with that same problem. What would you advise them? How would you encourage them? Record what you would tell them.

Then, use that advice yourself.

10. Decide, commit, act, repeat.

While inspiration is wonderful, waiting around for it before you take action could leave you at a standstill for ages. So could waiting for the perfect time, the ideal conditions, the guarantee of success. Decide to pursue your purposeful goal, commit to doing what’s necessary, take action, and repeat. Often.

The common denominator: Look within for motivation. You can’t control whether someone applauds you or ‘likes’ your post or thanks you for your effort, and if you rely on those externals to keep you motivated, you may find yourself disappointed. Determine what will bring about your internal applause instead.

As we say in our ASPIRE Success Club meetings, we’re not just here to learn – we’re here to implement. Which of the ten ideas above will you put into action first?

Go For The Win – Or Wait Until Next Year?

Christi Hegstad October 20th, 2019

A while ago, members of the ASPIRE Success Club volunteered with the Special Olympics. Some of us had done so before, and others were experiencing this powerful event for the first time. The heart and determination the athletes demonstrated was so inspiring!

It was during that event that I learned the Special Olympics motto. I love its succinctness, power, and applicability in so many life areas.

We’re on the homestretch of 2019, friends. Maybe you’re questioning whether or not you can truly achieve the goals you’ve set. Maybe you’re doubting yourself or thinking, “Well, maybe next year.”

This week, go for the win.

Believe in yourself.

Get re-motivated.

Reach out for help.

Instead of spending precious energy wondering and doubting and worrying, spend it going for the win.

And even if you don’t get the win, you can celebrate the fact that you gave it your all!
