Coaching + Connection Q&A

Christi Hegstad November 20th, 2023

I recently shared about a new offering for 2024 that includes both 1:1 coaching sessions plus monthly opportunities to connect with other achievers. Today, I am addressing a few additional questions that have been asked about this unique offering!

Can I schedule my coaching sessions however I want?

Yes! Whether you choose the 4, 6, or 12 session program, you can spread them out throughout the year or we can coordinate them on an as-needed basis. The only requirement is to complete them by 12/1/24.

What will our coaching sessions focus on?

Essentially, we can focus on whatever you’d like. You might set a goal at the start and we coach toward it throughout the year, or you can bring a new issue or focus to each session. That’s the beauty of 1:1 coaching: it is truly customized to meet your needs.

Many people come to coaching knowing they want ongoing support but not really sure what specific outcome they desire. That is absolutely fine! Part of our first session – as well as the Coaching Self-Assessment you’ll receive in advance – will bring greater clarity and focus right from the start.

What is your area of coaching specialization?

I am a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) specializing in personal growth and professional / executive development. Topics I frequently coach on include goals, purpose, meaningful work, leadership, confidence, motivation, business and career growth, and time/productivity.

What will the ‘connection’ opportunities be in this Coaching + Connection program?

Each month throughout 2024, you will be invited to connect with fellow achievers! These are wonderful opportunities to get to know, learn from, and become inspired by other outstanding individuals.

These connection points will be a combination of in-person and virtual offerings and will include mastermind sessions, guided topical / book discussions, office hours, Q&A sessions, and relaxing Happiness Hour gatherings. We have one planned each month throughout the year, and everyone enrolled is welcome to attend as many as they wish!

Limited spots are available for this 2024 program, so I encourage you to email us and reserve your spot. You can find additional information here, and feel free to ask further questions in the comments below!

3 Questions I Am Asked The Most

Christi Hegstad November 14th, 2023

For 20 years now, my business has existed to help people work with meaning, live with purpose, and make their positive difference.

And while I’ve been asked countless brilliant and thoughtful questions over that time, some come up more than others. Here are three that rise to the surface, along with a brief action step for each to help you begin finding your answers.

1. I long for clarity – about my vision for the future, my decisions, even just my next best step – but I just can’t seem to find it. How can I gain more clarity?

This question often stems from one of two places:

Having so many ideas and possibilities that you don’t know where to start, or

feeling so exhausted and overwhelmed that you don’t have the energy to generate new ideas.

But if you have ever experienced clarity – a crystal-clear vision for your future, a shining goal that you’re moving toward, or a focused top priority for the day, for example – you know how that clarity can pull you forward and help all the excess ‘stuff’ and distractions melt away.

Crafting a clear vision is one of the first things we’ll do if you choose to coach with me. In the meantime, I encourage you to first consider how you think best – on paper, while out on a walk, etc. Then, set aside some time and space in that format to focus on this question:

“If I had infinite time, money, energy, and courage, what would I love to do?”

Let your mind roam freely with this question. You might generate possible career paths, hobbies to try, places you’d like to travel, causes you’d love to support, people to collaborate with, and who knows what else.

This is one of the best ways to begin gaining clarity on your vision, as well as clues into your passions and purpose.

Imagining life as if we had no barriers might seem too unrealistic to be helpful. But here’s the thing:

We need to get clear on the WHAT before we start focusing on the HOW.

As it stands, many of us generate a cool idea, immediately follow it with ‘But how would I ever make that happen?’, then dismiss it and feel muddled once again.

Clarity begins with a bit of dreaming. We can weave in the actions, solutions, and the how after that.

2. I feel like I’m spinning my wheels, constantly moving but not actually getting anywhere. How can I get unstuck and start feeling more intentional and fulfilled?

If this question prompts you to picture a hamster in a wheel, or yourself on a treadmill that never stops, you’re in good company. That’s exactly what ‘spinning our wheels’ can feel like! And for achievers, this is especially unpleasant, because we tend to like results, signs of growth/forward movement, and checking things off the list.

And just as if we were on that eternal treadmill, we first need to stop (or at least pause or slow down) so we can then step off and decide, with intention and clarity, which direction and pace we want to go.

One of my favorite ways to do this involves creating a Breakthrough Map. I’ve written about this extensively, such as this article, so I’ll direct you there as a starting point.

Plus, a hint: Your first center circle could hold the question, How can I get unstuck? You might be surprised how many possibilities surface where there previously seemed none, simply by using this tool!

3. What if I don’t know what my core values are? My purpose? My passions?

Often, the question beneath the question here is also a fear:

What if I don’t actually HAVE these things?

Well, first, rest easy in knowing that you do. Even if we’re not clear what our values might be or how to state our purpose, I fully believe each and every one of us has them. The benefit in clarifying them is that we can then intentionally act in favor of them for greater fulfillment, flow, and meaningful success.

Similarly, if you’ve ever experienced feeling ‘off’ but couldn’t exactly pinpoint why, chances are we could trace it back to a value not being honored.

If you want to clarify your core values and write your succinct, customized Purpose Statement, we can do this in a 4-session coaching program – just reach out to my office to get started.

And to begin exploring this question even before we meet, think of a few highlight moments or peak experiences in your life – times when you felt fully alive, engaged, operating at your best, and/or right where you were meant to be. These could include personal and professional, planned (such as achieving a goal) and unplanned (such as you just happened to be sitting next to a person who needed your unique help), public and private.

Then, start to tease them apart and look for patterns. How did you feel in the moment? Why does this particular time stand out for you? How did you prepare and/or proceed through the experience? What strengths did you engage? What did you notice afterwards?

Chances are, reflecting deeply on a few key moments will begin giving you insight into your values, purpose, and what truly matters to you.

But Wait, There’s More!

Actually, there are several other questions that I could include in this list, such as:

How can I do what I love / pursue meaningful work amidst so many life requirements (like needing health insurance, providing for my family, and so on)?

I’m good at starting goals and projects and dreams but tend to lose momentum over time. How can I stay focused and motivated?

What if I am [insert solidly-adult number here] years old and still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up?

I coach people through these questions and more every day, so I encourage you to reach out for a complimentary Discovery Session and see if coaching is right for you. With my flexible new coaching programs, you may find you can answer some seemingly-giant-and-impossible questions in a fairly short time!

Which of these questions do you find yourself asking? What others come to mind when it comes to meaningful work, purposeful lives, and making your difference? Feel free to share others below!

Year-End Goal Boosters

Christi Hegstad November 9th, 2023

With just a handful of weeks left in the year, I’ve been asking a number of people how they’re feeling about goals – whether ones they’re currently working toward, or as they think ahead to 2024.

The answers have varied widely, from ‘Super motivated!’ to ‘Meh’ to ‘Goals? What goals?’

And often, it simply depends on the day.

If you need a bit of a boost as the year winds down, here are a few ideas:

* Focus in.

If you have one main goal, really zeroing in on one step or milestone at a time could help you progress more easefully. And if you have several goals, this might mean asking which 1-2 truly matter most at this time.

* Acknowledge how far you’ve come – even if it’s not where you expected to be.

Where were you last year at this time on this particular goal? What can you do or say now that you couldn’t six months ago? Give yourself credit for the progress you have made. Sullivan + Hardy’s book, The Gap + The Gain, offers a great reminder to the importance/benefits of this.

* Revisit your WHY.

Remembering why you started can fuel your motivation like nothing else. And also be open to the possibility that things – including timing – may have changed since you first stepped on the path to your goal.

What else would you add for some year-end goal motivation?

You Matter, And So Does Your Work

Christi Hegstad November 3rd, 2023

You matter, and your work matters.

If I could shout a message from the mountaintops, I think it would be this!

Regardless of your title, salary, level of public acknowledgment, or other external factors, you make a difference. What you do matters, and no one can do it quite like you – with your unique set of strengths, values, and capabilities.

“Burnout results not from hard work – people are capable of working very hard,” wrote Rabbi Harold Kushner over 20 years ago, “but from a sense of futility, the fear that all the hard work isn’t making a difference.”

While burnout can be a very complex and multifaceted issue, I agree with Rabbi Kushner’s sentiment about the importance in knowing our work makes a difference.

And I just wanted to put that reminder out today – you matter and your work does make a difference!

If you’d like to connect the dots between the work you do and the difference it makes, or want support in helping your team connect those dots, please contact me. Meaningful work is one of my #1 coaching topics!

Whether you are in the midst of a huge assignment, or between jobs, or working in the home or on a volunteer basis or exploring a new venture in retirement or countless other possibilities:

Thank you for who you are, and for what you do.

Coaching Is For You If…

Christi Hegstad November 2nd, 2023

After 20 years in business, my coaching firm is undergoing some exciting transformations in the new year – which includes newly-restructured coaching offerings! We are currently enrolling clients into these programs for 2024. If you’ve wondered if coaching is right for you, here are some considerations to help you make your decision.

A Quick Overview

With our new coaching structure, you now have the flexibility to choose either a 4-, 6-, or 12-session program, whichever suits your needs best. Once enrolled, you can either schedule your sessions as you need them throughout 2024, or we can schedule all of your sessions in advance so you have quarterly, bimonthly, or monthly coaching (depending on the program you choose) lined up for the entire year!

This Coaching Is Ideal For You If You …

* Would love to know support is ‘on deck’ but don’t feel the need to meet every week.

* Are a strong starter with your goals or plans but tend to lose momentum over time.

* Find yourself saying, ‘I wish I had someone to talk this through / brainstorm ideas / generate solutions with!’

* Lead others and are looking for ways to help team members stay engaged, satisfied, feeling valued, and reaching their highest potential.

* Have a dream or goal you want to achieve and need help designing and/or sticking to your action plan.

* Crave clarity around your future vision and best next steps.

* Have important events throughout the year (such as presentations, performance reviews, board meetings, etc) and would benefit from preparing with an objective partner.

* Are in the midst of a transition, or sense one approaching, and want to proceed with intention and purpose.

* Know you would benefit from periodic accountability and motivating check-ins.

* Would like to explore ways to be intentional with your time and experience healthy, purposeful productivity.

* Are a coach yourself and recognize the value and importance of regularly being coached.

* Want to write your own personal Purpose Statement.

* Wish to engage in meaningful work – whatever your role.

* Would love to end 2023 knowing your professional development / coaching support is lined up for the entire next year.

If you resonate with one or more of the above points, let’s talk.

Side note: Many people come to coaching not fully sure what they want – they may not have a goal or outcome in mind, they just know they’re ready for something *different.* You don’t have to have it figured out before you start – we can do that together, often in our first coaching session.

BONUS: Opportunities To Connect With Other Achievers!

In addition to your one-on-one coaching sessions, everyone who engages in one of these programs – whether 4-, 6-, or 12-session – will also be invited to quarterly gatherings throughout 2024 to connect with other achievers! These will be offered both in-person and virtually.

Plus, you’ll have access to scheduled office hours, where you can discuss goal progress, brainstorm ideas, and cheer each other on / hold each other accountable with all those present!

Coaching sessions are held one-on-one with Dr. Christi Hegstad and can be conducted via Zoom or phone (your preference). Dr. Christi is an ICF-credentialed Professional Certified Coach dedicated to your meaningful success and bringing over 20 years of entrepreneurial, professional, and coaching experience to each session.

The number of openings for coaching clients is limited. Please visit our coaching + connection page to learn more and enroll (this page features our 6-session program; contact us if you’re interested in our 4- or 12-session options). You’re also welcome to contact us if you have questions or would like to request a brief phone call to see if coaching is right for your specific needs.

Let’s make your 2024 the most meaningful, purposeful, difference-making one yet!

Lessons Learned – October 2023

Christi Hegstad November 1st, 2023

Whether it’s curbing overthinking, savoring the moment, or watching people I love doing what they love, lessons flourished in October. I hope you enjoy my little monthly note to self!

1. Time with the trees is time well-spent.

2. Sitting around wishing things would change rarely leads to things changing.

3. Making memories is important. But so is enjoying the tiny, delight-filled moments – however fleeting.

4. You could ‘what if’ your way through 872 possible scenarios and still be surprised by the one that actually occurs.

5. When you feel in a fog, sometimes the cure is fresh air or long walks or decluttering. And sometimes it’s rewriting your entire business plan from scratch.

6. Putting a book in a Little Free Library, then seeing it gone 15 minutes later, is its own kind of joy.

7. Do your due diligence, make your decision, then take an action in favor of that decision. This method serves you well.

8. Whatever your hobby or passion, there’s probably a community around it, and they are probably awesome.

9. When someone ‘makes it look easy,’ it’s often because of hours, years, even decades of effort behind the scenes.

10. “Does it even count if it’s not shared on social media?” Yes. Yes it does.

Do any of these resonate with you? Let me know!

Coming Out Of A Fog

Christi Hegstad October 31st, 2023

I can’t fully explain it, but I am grateful for it:

Along with the lessons October brought me (check back later this week for that post!), I feel like I have also, in many ways, come out of a fog.

I’m not exactly sure what caused the fog in the first place, though I do have a few ideas. But I knew something had to change, and that it was up to me to change it. So, I tried a number of different strategies, including:

* Practicing intentional, daily mindset work

* Decluttering my workspace

* Taking many Clarity Walks (see my LinkedIn post from last week for more on these)

* Connecting with inspiring, helpful, difference-making people

* Finishing several lingering to-do’s

* Returning to some personal + spiritual practices that had slipped by the wayside

* Taking an honest look at my goals and refreshing as needed

* Drinking more water

Nothing too monumental here, right? But somehow, in the month of October, things thankfully seemed to come together a bit more clearly.

Now, any researcher worth her salt knows not to implement 157 different things at once in an experiment, because then you can’t isolate what, exactly, caused the outcome.

So while I can’t tell what specifically prompted my personal fog-lifting, I’m just thankful it happened! And I’m willing to keep up with some of these practices in the hope of continued clarity.

I wanted to share a few of these ideas today in case they help prompt some ideas for you, too. And also to help future-me, when I need another boost.

If you feel a bit ‘foggy’ or weighed down, remember – this too shall pass. And if one of these strategies sounds helpful, or if this post supports you in coming up with one or two of your own to try, I’m so glad!

Here’s to a clear and strong finish to 2023!

Persevering And Letting Go

Christi Hegstad October 26th, 2023

At first glance, they may seem diametrically opposed:

Grit = Persevering

Quit = Stopping

I am fascinated, however, by how much these two books and concepts can share in common. For example:

For both, it helps to know your why.

Not everything is worth pursuing when the going gets tough, just like not everything is worth quitting in the same circumstance. Your level of passion and how fully the act contributes to the expression of your purpose, for example, can be major players in your decision to persevere or quit. It helps to be discerning and to know the reason behind what you’re doing.

For both, it helps to know the costs.

There can be a tendency to equate perseverance as good and quitting as bad. If persevering means unhealthy risk, potential danger, or negative impact to one’s top priorities or values, however, letting go might be the wiser choice; we need to weigh options as objectively as possible. (Duke gives great examples of this with the decisions climbers of Mt. Everest must make along the way.)

Grit + quitting can actually coexist.

A combination of the two in a single endeavor could potentially lead to the most beneficial outcomes. For example, if your business experiences a year of struggle, you may believe the only options include an all-or-nothing ‘grin and bear it and struggle through another year’ or shut it down. Considering a blend instead – ie, persevering with the business but quitting certain offerings – could open doors that previously seemed closed.

Another commonality between the books: Grit by Angela Duckworth made my top 10 list when I first read it in 2018, and Quit by Annie Duke will make my top ten in 2023! 🙂 I learned a great deal from both books and believe reading them in tandem could spark some incredible thoughts.

Have you read either of these books? What’s a top takeaway for you?

Crafting Your Vision Statement

Christi Hegstad October 24th, 2023

If you feel less than enthusiastic about your work, clarity, or sense of success these days, I did something recently that has made a profound difference – maybe you want to give it a try, too:

I wrote a new vision statement.

I wrote my first vision statement years ago, and although I revisit and revise it pretty regularly, I recently realized that what I had didn’t quite ‘fit’ anymore.

Things have changed, *I* have changed, and I needed my vision statement to reflect that.

So I pulled out a blank piece of paper, asked myself a few questions, and let myself dream without limitations. I then noted the most important-to-me points and crafted them into a statement.

Once I sat with this newly-revised vision statement for a while, other things – such as my goals, plans, and focus for the upcoming year – started falling into place, too.

A few of the questions that got me started, which you might try asking yourself:

* If I waved a magic wand and everything went absolutely beautifully, what would I see 3 (or 5, or 10) years from now?

* At my 95th birthday party, what would I love to hear said when others are toasting me?

* How would I like to finish this sentence: “When people think of _______, they think of me”? In other words, what do I want to be ‘known for’?

And one of my personal favorites,

* What will the world look like once I’ve finished changing it?

These are big questions, which is what we need to craft a big vision! But don’t worry if it takes a while to uncover your answers. (And if you’d like help with this, contact me – I coach often on vision, purpose statement, and values work!)

Do you have a vision statement? What other questions might you ask yourself to help clarify your vision? Share your ideas and questions below!

Time Blocks For Loose Ends

Christi Hegstad October 19th, 2023

Last week, I scheduled a block of time dedicated to tying up loose ends.

I had several items piling up – decisions waiting to be finalized and tasks needing completion. These items were necessary but not super time-sensitive, so it felt easy to push them back another day or week.

When that happens, however, the ‘lingeringness’ eventually gets to me. So I periodically schedule an appointment with myself and implement one of my top guiding principles: Decide And Take Action.

During that time block, I make decisions, take action, and commit to getting stuff done!

And I feel lighter afterwards.

This week, consider a task(s) that’s been lingering and would feel good to complete. Block the time in your planner, then Decide And Take Action!

Take note of how you feel afterwards, too – that can serve as helpful motivation!
