Making Your Priorities Your Priority

Christi Hegstad March 2nd, 2020

Health. Career. Kids. Fitness. Personal growth. Friends. Extended family. Financial wellbeing…

The list of potential priorities could extend for miles.

Which ones matter most to you?

Maybe you have a difficult time deciding.

But maybe you’ve also learned that if everything is important, essentially nothing is important.

This week, make your priorities your priority.

Decide what your top priorities are at this time.

Then, pull out your weekly calendar and schedule time for them.

Honor that time as if you were paying someone $1,000 per hour for it.

Next weekend, review how it felt to schedule your priorities and honor them fully. I bet words like ‘fulfilling’ and ‘purposeful’ and ‘intentional’ will land at the forefront!

Living With Intention, One Day At A Time

Christi Hegstad February 17th, 2020
Living big is being brave enough to claim your own truth, being bold enough to read the poem that’s stamped across your heart. Out loud so everybody can hear.
Pam Grout

I recently read an expanded version of this quote to a room full of difference-making achievers – people whom I have *no doubt* are already living big but are still committed to learning, growing, and bringing even more intention to the every day.

They want to align their goals and actions with their core values.

They’re dedicated to making a positive impact in others’ lives while also keeping themselves replenished and fulfilled.

They choose to infuse each day with meaning and purpose rather than negativity, blame, and circumstance.

Does this sound like you, too? I bet it does.

This week, set a daily intention.

Each morning, perhaps as you peek at your activities and your Daily Top 3, ask yourself who + how you want to be throughout the day. Choose a word or phrase that captures it.

If you have a day overflowing with activity, for example, you might set an intention of “Energy.”

If you have some potentially tense meetings, your intention might be “Calm.”

You might choose “Peaceful” or “Focused” or “Purposefully Productive,” depending on what you most need right now.

Return to your intention throughout the day, taking a deep breath each time you do.

Each day, each moment, that you choose to live with intention will bring you closer to a meaningful, purposeful, big, and enriching life. Start right now!

17 Lessons in 17 Years!

Christi Hegstad February 14th, 2020

Happy MAPiversary! This month, my coaching and training firm – MAP Professional Development Inc. – celebrates 17 years in business. Below are 17 lessons I have learned in these years of business ownership – which one resonates most with you?

1. Revisit your ‘why’ on a daily basis.

2. Set goals from a place of vision – not fear, lack, or the way it’s always been.

3. Dream big. Then, dream even bigger.

4. Believe in yourself.

5. Believe in others, too. And the greater good.

6. Nurture your community.

7. Repeat after me: You can – and will – handle it.

17MAPiversary

8. Ask for help.

9. Focus in your area of genius as much as possible.

10. Stay in your own lane.

11. Read excellent books. Apply what you learn.

12. Do you. Even if it means doing things differently.

13. It’s ok to mess up sometimes. Even if others see. Own it, show yourself compassion, and learn going forward.

14. Invest in coaching, mentoring, and masterminding from people farther along the path.

15. Decide, then take an action in favor of that decision.

16. Let go of the word ‘should’. Replace it with ‘will’ or ‘won’t’; ‘choose to’ or ‘choose not to’.

17. Have fun while making your difference!

Side note: This list could easily have been 894,205,147 items long. 🙂

THANK YOU for your business and support over the past 17 years! Let me know below which lesson speaks to you the most – or what you would add!

Bringing Your Gifts To Your Goals

Christi Hegstad February 3rd, 2020
The goal is not to attain some imaginary ideal; it is to find and fully use our own gifts.
Gay Hendricks

Maybe you have a knack for taking the complex and making it simple.

Maybe you can seamlessly redirect conversations to focus on solutions instead of blame.

Maybe you’re organized, or persistent, or able to see the beauty in any situation.

Each of us has different gifts. They often become so second-nature, however, that we can easily forget or even discredit them.

This week, connect your gifts to your goals.

Without being humble, identify – and celebrate! – your gifts.

Then ask yourself how they can support you in achieving your bold goals.

How might you simplify your complex goal into manageable action steps? How could your ability to organize help you launch that program, design that business, or speak on that stage?

Not only will you find this goal / gift connection helpful in terms of your sense of fulfillment, you may discover it’s a powerful motivation and productivity booster as well!

How Do Your Goals Help You Make Your Difference?

Christi Hegstad January 26th, 2020
High performers want to know that their efforts align with something important, that their work is significant, and that their lives are creating a legacy and feeding a larger purpose.”
Brendon Burchard

Each and every one of us matters. No doubt about that.

We also benefit from knowing that our efforts help create the difference we want to make in the world. You may think you need a certain title or role for that to occur, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

It’s more about the meaning, mindset, and approach we bring to the work than it is about the task, title, or work itself.

Same goes for our goals.

This week, ask how your #1 goal can make a difference.

Is reaching that revenue solely about the number – or also about how you will be able to more fully support causes that matter to you?

Is growing your social media audience solely about appearing successful – or also about being able to help more people believe in themselves through your messaging?

Is achieving the next rank in the company solely about the prestige – or also about lifting up others following you on the journey?

To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with setting goals around money, follower counts, and the like. But for maximum motivation and fulfillment, try connecting a few more dots with regards to how your goals feed a larger purpose.

Believe me, this knowledge will support you like nothing else when your motivation needs a boost!

Getting Past The When/Then Barrier

Christi Hegstad January 23rd, 2020

I’m almost embarrassed to admit one of my biggest lessons of 2019.

As I sat down to conduct my year-end review last month, I noticed an interesting pattern, particularly in the first half of the year. I’ll call it ‘when/then’ and it sounded something like this:

> WHEN I get past this event, THEN I’ll focus more on my habits and goals.

> WHEN I am inspired, THEN I’ll create the content.

> WHEN I feel ready, THEN I’ll [insert any number of actions here].

The result? I delayed my own success in a couple of areas that are actually quite important to me.

I didn’t beat myself up over this, but I *did* get curious and ask myself what I want to do differently this year.

Thus came one of my new Guiding Principles:

Just Do The Thing.

When I know it’s right, and it matters, and it’s aligned with my purpose and values, I am committed to taking the action.

Because you know what? There will always be things that try to block us – whether that’s an event or a belief or a fear. Our job as purposeful, difference-making achievers is to acknowledge those bumps in the road but not to let them keep us from doing what we’re here to do.

What lesson or Guiding Principle are you implementing this year? Share below!

Goals: How Many, What Kind, and How I Set Mine

Christi Hegstad January 16th, 2020

It’s mid-January. I’m guessing that by now you’ve had your fill of “New Year, New You!” promotions, gym discounts in the mailbox, and trying to figure out if you’re supposed to set one main goal so you can focus or 50 small goals so you have variety or if you instead need to set resolutions or intentions or…

Yeah, there’s a lot of info out there, and much of it confusing or conflicting!

So today I thought I’d address a few goal-setting FAQs within the framework of my own process. These include some of the basics that have helped me earn a PhD, run a marathon, contribute significantly to charity, start and grow a business, and more. Feel free to give the following pointers a try, or adapt them to suit your personality and motivation style!

Young woman thinking with question mark circulation around her h

“How many goals do I need to set?”

Napoleon Hill, in his classic book Think and Grow Rich, emphasizes the importance of having one clear, singular goal. Jack Canfield of Chicken Soup for the Soul fame recommends a minimum of 21 goals – at least three in each of seven life areas.

Personally, I would feel bored or easily stuck with just one goal and completely overwhelmed with 20+. My magic number? Three.

Now bear in mind, I’m talking about Bold Goals here: the ones that stretch you, require consistent attention and action, and generally take a year (or sometimes longer) to achieve.

Hosting a conference for the leaders in your industry might be a Bold Goal, whereas designing a 30-minute webinar to share during a chapter meeting might be more of a project. Your Bold Goal may be a home remodel; getting a new set of chairs for your office, a project.

See the difference? I typically set 3 Bold Goals per year, and any number of projects and activities.

goals text on paper with cup of coffee

“What kind of goals will best serve me?”

“If I’m focusing on my health this year, should I only set health and fitness goals?”

You could – but this could potentially cause other areas of your life to become neglected or out of whack. Like I always tell my coaching clients, I want you to be successful in your work – but not at the expense of your relationships, health, or other important aspects of life.

With my 3 Bold Goals, I usually focus one on business / work, one personal, and one in whatever is calling to me most. Sometimes that third goal comes directly from my Life List (aka, bucket list)!

You might find this brief video I recorded a month or so ago helpful as you determine what kind of goals will best suit you.

Strong confident woman! Winning and life goals concept.

“How do I best choose, and then actually set, my goals?”

Give yourself the gift of some quiet, uninterrupted time alone – ideally with nothing but pen and paper. Start with a big mess of ideas, then begin prioritizing them in terms of your energy / enthusiasm toward them, how they will impact your work and/or life, how aligned they are with your values, and so on.

I also encourage you to go deep and determine your ‘why’ for each of your goals. Let’s say you set a goal to bring in a certain revenue for your business. Why? To beat last year’s revenue. Why? To continue growing the company. Why? To serve and employ more people. Why? To make a positive difference in the lives of as many people as possible while honoring your own purpose. Why? To go to bed at night feeling a sense of fulfillment.

See how the multiple ‘why’ question can really get you somewhere?

Start the year with clear and meaningful goals, and you’re already well on your way to their achievement!

Goals, Values, and the Ultimate Motivator

Christi Hegstad January 15th, 2020
I don’t want to waste my time. I don’t want to compromise on my values. I want to be the best person I can be, living a life I love and making a contribution to the lives of others.
Kristina Karlsson

Do you ever get really excited about a goal or resolution, fully convinced that this is the year you will achieve it … only to lose steam a few weeks in?

There is a vitally important aspect of successful goal-setting that’s not often discussed:

Your core values.

If your goals aren’t aligned with your values, you’re likely going to struggle with them.

This week, check in with your goals via your values.

Pull out (or write out) your list of values, the 3-5 non-negotiables in your life that signify you at your core and serve as your compass.

Then, look at each of your goals through the lens of your values, asking yourself how they connect. Consider how that connection can fuel your energy and motivation going forward.

And if you don’t see a link, consider tweaking your goals.

Values = the natural motivator!

Making Your Impact Through Memorable Moments

Christi Hegstad January 14th, 2020

How can you create memorable – potentially life-changing – moments for your team, your family, and even people you may never actually meet?

Chip and Dan Heath, the brothers who brought us Made To Stick and Decisive, answer this question in their latest book, The Power Of Moments. While the suggestions and research they share are fantastic, what really knocks this book out of the park are the numerous stories.

Perhaps my favorite was that of Doug Dietz, who spent years creating a state of the art MRI machine – only to discover that it terrified the children needing it. He went back to the drawing board, this time taking a child’s perspective, and ultimately designed machines that looked like jungle adventures, pirate ships, and more. Dietz, who also has a TED Talk, turned a potentially frightening experience into a memorable, inviting, even fun moment: After her MRI, one little girl asked her mom, ‘Can we come back tomorrow?’

This book offers terrific insights for making a positive, purposeful impact on others by being intentional and a bit creative. Recommended reading for organizational leaders, teachers, coaches, and anyone who desires to make a difference!

>> Friends, I am thinking about posting a brief, weekly’ish Thursday book review on social media, sharing highlights from what I’m reading. Would you enjoy this? If so, please let me know at Instagram or Facebook!
