Growth Beyond Bigger, Faster, More

Christi Hegstad August 27th, 2018
Coaching Tip:
How big is your email list? How fast do you run a mile? How much is in your bank account? How many followers do you have on Facebook?
In many ways, our society is obsessed with numbers.
But getting too wrapped up in numbers – a more surface-level measurement – can often impede with our celebration of true success. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather have one deep and meaningful conversation than ten surface ones. I’d rather have five true friends I can count on than 500 acquaintances.
Depth, meaning, engagement, commitment, energy… growth can be measured in ways other than bigger/faster/more.
Inspired Action:
Ask yourself where you’ve been focusing too much on an external numbers: Instagram followers? Pounds on the scale? People joining your program? Focus your attention this week on how you can create more meaning and depth in that area, regardless of the numbers.
Where do you experience depth? Share your thoughts here!

What Is A Mastermind, And Is It For Me?

Christi Hegstad August 23rd, 2018

A few years after starting my business, I joined my first mastermind group. I’ll be honest: I didn’t really know what it was, and I was actually a bit afraid to enroll, but everything about it just sounded right. After three years of trying to figure things out on my own and craving insight from other successful leaders, I felt deep inside that I needed to do this – scared or not.

Twelve years and numerous masterminds later, I am so glad I honored that feeling.

Aside from one-on-one coaching, nothing has propelled my business – and in many ways, my life – as much as participating in mastermind groups. And for the past six years, I have had the privilege of facilitating mastermind groups for high-achieving, purposeful women looking to accomplish a bold goal while honoring their values, serving their families and communities, and having a blast in the process.

What Exactly IS A Mastermind?

The term ‘mastermind’ was reportedly coined by Napoleon Hill in his classic book, Think And Grow Rich. He describes the mastermind as the ‘intangible force, likened to a third [master] mind’ that forms when two or more people working toward a definite purpose come together.

“When high achievers are asked about the one thing that contributed the most to their becoming a millionaire,” Chicken Soup for the Soul creator Jack Canfield recently posted on Facebook, “participation in a mastermind is their primary answer.”

Canfield went on to share a great, concise description of the mastermind:

“The foundational philosophy of a mastermind is that more can be achieved in less time when people work together – focusing energy, resources, knowledge, and insights on creating solutions and opportunities for one another.”

In the masterminds I have participated in as well as those I have facilitated, I have always, always found this to be the case. Participants experience tangible, goal-oriented results as well as something even deeper: camaraderie, intimate trust, and lifelong friendship. Some of my closest friends on the planet began as my mastermind partners!

How To Find The Right Mastermind For You

Masterminds come in all shapes and sizes: Some with revenue minimums and some without. Some with unlimited membership and some with a maximum of five people. Some costing upwards of $50,000 for the year and some for free. If you are considering joining a mastermind, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

What do I most hope to gain from my experience?

Before seeking out a mastermind group, decide what you want to gain from your involvement. Increased revenue? Completion of your book? To launch a nonprofit? Host your first live event? Friendship, laughter, and a true sense of camaraderie? People to bounce ideas off of and help you prioritize? Determine your mastermind goals, even loose ones, so you can ask about them before enrolling.

Who is leading the mastermind, and are they credible?

Don’t be afraid to ask the leader of your mastermind questions. Have they facilitated masterminds before? What kind of results have past participants experienced? What business or leadership experience does she or he have? This article may provide more ideas as well.

How much support can I expect?

How often will your mastermind group meet? Is one-on-one coaching also included? Is a discussion forum provided for questions between the meetings? Is your facilitator available to answer questions by email or during office hours? Will any training or content be provided? Know what will be available for you once you begin.

What do I wish I had in my work, business, and/or life – and can the mastermind provide it?

Over the past several years, my mastermind participants have expressed gratitude not only for the coaching and masterminding, but for unexpected gifts as well: “I loved knowing I had people I could bounce an idea off of.” “If I needed an extra set of eyes before hitting ‘publish’ on my blog, a Masterminder was always willing to help.” “I didn’t realize how isolated I had been as an entrepreneur prior to the Mastermind!”

What will ‘success’ look like to me?

As I mentioned, I have always found my involvement in masterminds worth far more than the investment – even when the investment was gasp-worthy. Part of that I credit to asking myself, prior to starting, “What will make me look back on this experience and say, ‘Yes, that was definitely worth it!’?” If your revenue increases to an amount more than the investment fee? If you end the program with a greater sense of clarity, confidence, or work/life balance? If you continue meeting with your mastermind partners after the program has ended?

Inspirational motivational quote "you are capable of great things." on abstract background.

A Few Additional Tips To Consider:

Pursue the best program you can afford, even if it’s a stretch. I have gasped with nearly every check I’ve written for professional coaching and masterminding, which continues to increase as my business grows. I have always received a greater return on my investment.

Surround yourself with brilliance. Jim Rohn famously said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Embrace the group that will encourage, uplift, share generously, hold you accountable, and challenge you to be your absolute best.

Make the most of it. Put mastermind event dates on your calendar right away and hold them sacred. Contribute to the private discussion groups. Engage in one-on-one calls with your mastermind partners. The cliche is true, you get out of it what you put into it.

Networking groups, book clubs, professional associations…you have numerous opportunities to grow yourself personally and professionally, and all of those are valuable (I have been involved in all of them since the start of my business as well). But none of those groups quite compare to the intimate, focused, trajectory-changing purpose of a mastermind group – I cannot recommend them highly enough! I encourage you to consider enrolling in one – even if it’s scary. Your future self will thank you for it!

We are now enrolling for our sixth Mastermind group, which runs from September 2018 – March 2019! Click here for more information and to request your application.

SUMMER OF CLARITY: 15 Ways I Simplified Work and Life!

Christi Hegstad August 10th, 2018

If you read my last newsletter, sent over two months ago, you know I intentionally stepped away from many business routines this summer. Perhaps I’ll share in an upcoming post exactly why that felt necessary, but suffice it to say this summer proved the perfect time to take a step back, pull in the reins, and refocus!

Enter: The Summer Of Clarity.

We  have done massive work this season to clarify, simplify, and streamline, with exceptional – and surprising – results both professionally and personally. I want to share some of the most impactful actions with you and I encourage you to give one a try, especially if you feel in a ‘heavy’ season.

I have kept each item brief but am happy to elaborate on any – just post your questions on my Instagram or Facebook and I will do my best to answer!

1. I decluttered my entire office, office closet, and workspace. Purged old papers, shredded outdated files, consolidated binders, minimized supply cabinets, you name it. I also uncovered many books that I will be giving away soon, so make sure you’re on our list if you’d like a chance at great reading material!

2. While I have themed / batched my days for quite a while now, I started batching my weeks, too. This has been monumental! I will definitely be sharing this strategy with my clients this fall!

3. I walked and walked – nearly every morning this summer – and during those walks I had my best business ideas. I also lost about 10 pounds that I had gained over the past year, so that was a fun bonus.

One month's mileage tracker in my bullet journal, complete with self-portrait. :)

4. Sales experts recommend charging $97 instead of $100; research apparently shows people are more likely to buy at the $97 mark even though it’s just a $3 difference. With simplicity and clarity as our focus, we let go of the $97 rationale and rounded everything to the nearest denomination of ten. Sorry, sales psychologists – this is just easier!

5. I moved my writing desk right up to the window. No more office distractions during writing time! (The birds and greenery are more inspiring than distracting. :))

This little cutie visits me every day!
This little cutie visits me every day!

6.  I updated my Vision Statement and began reviewing it, along with my Purpose Statement and Guiding Principles, on a daily basis again. I had temporarily fallen out of that habit, and I could tell!

7. I minimalized my closet. I’m not quite at the capsule wardrobe, but pretty close, and it has been oddly liberating.

8. After building my email list for years, I realized that I really only want to send newsletters to people who look forward to them and open them regularly. Many business owners tout the importance of a big list; I want to make sure everyone on mine is not just receiving but truly and purposefully benefiting. We encouraged those no longer excited to hear from us to unsubscribe. (You can subscribe – or resubscribe – here.)

Clarity leads to bolder actions and greater world-changing.
Clarity leads to bolder actions and greater world-changing.

9. I restructured my coaching offerings to 3 simple packages. In a nutshell, this will benefit everyone involved! (If you are interested in pursuing coaching this fall or winter, be sure to get in touch ASAP.)

10. We systematized a TON. Over the course of the past few months I’ve paid close attention to all repetitive tasks – from email responses to file documentation to home projects – then created systems wherever possible. Like I’ve said for years, systems liberate you! The addition of more systems has been HUGE.

11. I made several significant (aka, scary) changes – but with a time limit. For example, we changed the way we do some of our business processes and will revisit in 6 months to see if we want to continue with those changes. I literally put that review date in the calendar. This time limit has been extremely helpful in preventing the “oh my gosh, now it must be this way until the end of time” way of thinking that can sometimes hold me back.

12. I finalized the 5 Pillars of Clarity and Confidence – the 5 areas that, for 15+ years, I have coached people on the most. Meaning and Purpose serve as the foundation for all 5 pillars. Some clients will focus on one pillar, others will walk through all five – the framework will meet you where you are and help you get where you want/need to be.

Grateful to be in this profession with other stellar coaches!
Grateful to be in this profession with other stellar coaches!

13. I stopped thinking about certain tasks, or transferring them from to-do list to to-do list, and did them. (Novel idea, eh?!) For example, I had two tasks to complete in order to advance my coaching credential to the next level. I’m embarrassed to admit those two tasks lingered for weeks months years … but I completed them, passed my exam, and am now a PCC!

14. Not my proudest moment, but I realized throughout all of this clarifying and simplifying that I had been holding on to some unhelpful ‘nontangibles,’ too: old resentments, expectations for how things ‘should’ be, and the like. I did the necessary mindset work and those seemed to fall away.

15. I journaled a ton. Like with the walking (see #3), and often in combination with the walking, ideas seemed to pour out – many of which led to the items listed here.

And a bonus tip: I went on a 2-week social media detox. I will be writing more about this experience – including the results and surprising discoveries – in an upcoming article, but I highly recommend it even for shorter periods of time.

I still have a few actions to check off my Summer of Clarity list, but starting was the hardest part – now it’s just finishing touches. The resulting clarity has freed up so much mental (and in some cases, physical) space! If one of these ideas resonates with you, give it a try. And if I can support you in any way, feel free to reach out.

Here’s to CLARITY and SIMPLICITY!

Who Needs A Coach?

Christi Hegstad May 10th, 2018
Happy International Coaching Week!
Today and every day I celebrate the brilliant clients who continually inspire me, my own coaches who have helped me grow exponentially, and wise coaching colleagues from whom I am always learning. I hardly knew this profession existed when I started my business 15 years ago; now it is the heart of what I do every day!
Who needs a coach? My initial response to that question is everyone – because I know (and have experienced, firsthand, for years) the powerful changes that can transpire with an excellent coach.
And while I have yet to encounter someone who is “uncoachable,” I also recognize that not everyone feels ready for coaching.
If the thought of being coached intrigues you, however, you are in good company. Everyone from business leaders like Bill Gates to elite athletes to educators to people simply searching for “something more” sing the praises – and reap the benefits – of coaching.
I have coached business owners, educators, writers, bankers, CEOs, managers, financial planners, healthcare providers, HR leaders, nonprofit directors, physical therapists, and professionals from nearly every industry in all parts of the country. I’d love to help you flourish in your work and life as well!
We have recently revamped our coaching packages and offer everything from a one-hour Kickstart Session to a 6-month streamlined program. If you’ve been thinking about working with a coach, you can get some of your questions answered here. And if you’d like to coach with me, I work with a very limited number of one-on-one clients each year and currently have two openings – I’d love to help you flourish in work, leadership, and life! Contact my office if you’d like to schedule a consultation.
Here’s to celebrating coaching clients, coaches, and the profession of coaching!

Meaningful Achiever Profile: Charlie Kiesling

Christi Hegstad March 30th, 2018

Throughout MAP Inc.’s 15th year in business, I am excited to profile some of the Meaningful Achievers with whom I have been blessed to work! Check Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter (all @ChristiHegstad) for more.

If you have met Charlie Kiesling, you know she is like a burst of sunshine when she enters a room! Whether leading in her role as HR Director with AccessSystems, enjoying her family, or serving her community (in this photo Charlie, center, is accepting the prestigious Governor’s Volunteer award for her extensive community impact), Charlie seems to bring a level of energy and positivity to every activity she pursues.

I have been fortunate to know, be inspired by, and work with Charlie in a variety of ways over many years. She is a longtime member of the ASPIRE Success Club, for example, and participated in my most recent Mastermind group as well. I asked Charlie a few questions about working with meaning, living with purpose, and what has contributed to her success:

What are some of your recent accomplishments?

“I put together a strong business plan along with 3 Bold Goals addressing both my personal and professional life. I am proud that I have stayed focused on those goals, worked with the team to accomplish critical business-driving actions, and am enjoying my ‘52 To 52’ – 52 new experiences leading up to my 52nd birthday!”

What has contributed to these accomplishments?

“My involvement in Mastermind as well as our monthly accountability journal, my accountability partner, and staying true to my core values. Plus I get a natural high from a sense of meaningful achievement, which also drives me forward.”

What are some of your biggest recent learnings?

“Expecting the unexpected and being able to roll with it! Learning to quiet my inner critic. Having the courage to stretch and trust my own strength.”

How has knowing your purpose impacted you?

“This has been profound for me. With Christi’s encouragement, I looked back and realized I have made major life decisions based on my core values without even realizing it. Now, I intentionally call on my values and purpose when making decisions and as a result, feel less apprehension when heading outside my comfort zone.”

What’s one lesson you’d like to share with others?

“Just one?! 🙂 Believe in yourself and your potential – instead of fake-it-til-you-make-it, FAITH it til you make it. Also, give yourself grace as you grow, expand, and step into your full potential.”

If you viewed this on Instagram, you’ll notice I used sunburst emojis as bullet points – a good representation of Charlie’s persona. I am grateful to know, work with, and be inspired by incredible clients like Charlie who so beautifully bring meaning to work and purpose to life!

5 Things I Would Do Differently [Lessons From 15 Years In Business]

Christi Hegstad February 28th, 2018

During this 15th anniversary month of MAP Professional Development Inc. (or, 15th MAPiversary, as we call it!), I am sharing 15 of the countless lessons learned over the past 15 years. Yesterday, I offered 5 things I would do exactly the same if I started my business over right now.

Today, I share 5 things I would do differently:

1. Worry Less.

As a new business owner, I constantly felt the need to prove myself and would agonize over details and swirl in indecision for the smallest things. Focus on building your experience rather than worrying about whether you appear ____________ enough (you can fill in the blank).

2. Trust Myself More.

Theodore Roosevelt once said comparison is the thief of joy, and I tend to agree. Learn to focus less on the ‘shoulds’ and what everyone else is doing, and focus more on trusting yourself. As my mom used to say, any decision made in love will not steer you astray.

3. Hire A Coach Sooner.

From the beginning, I enrolled in seminars, joined groups, attended conferences; all contributed to my growth, but nothing helped it skyrocket like working with a coach. I’ve hired dozens of them since. Recognize that you don’t have to go it alone, and nothing compares to the high level support of a trained, experienced professional fully invested in your success.

4. Less “Niche,” More “Ideal Client.”

Even though the business gurus said I must, I could not for the life of me figure out my niche market. I’ve coached entrepreneurs and financial planners and CEOs and academicians and firefighters and about every industry in between – where could my niche possibly lie? Then one day I focused on who my ideal client was instead – qualities, characteristics, and so on – and lo and behold the dilemma was solved. I’m grateful to now work with Meaningful Achievers every day.

5. Reach Out For Help.

For too long, I believed if I just put my head down and got to work, I could figure everything out. I shortened my learning curve drastically when I started admitting I didn’t have all the answers. Whatever your path, you don’t have to go it alone.

As you look back over your career or business, what is one thing you would do differently today? Feel free to share your thoughts below or on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter!

Bold Goal Dream Team: The 5 People Who Will Help You Achieve

Christi Hegstad January 18th, 2018

When I was in college, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen, and several other NBA stars took on the basketball world at the Olympic games. Nicknamed “The Dream Team,” these well-known players showed up with the goal of bringing home the gold. And with hard work as well as the support of coaches, trainers, fans, and more, The Dream Team did just that.

What goal could you accomplish with your own personal Dream Team?

Whenever I embark on a Bold Goal (a regular occurrence), I make sure I have five people/groups in place. Consider recruiting them for your Bold Goal Dream Team, too:

1. Inspiration Group

More than a standard networking group, an Inspiration Group surrounds you with like-minded people who want to see you succeed. The ASPIRE Success Club is a great example: Each member declares a Bold Goal toward the start of the year, then updates us on progress at our monthly meetings (and even more frequently in our online discussion forum) so we can offer ideas, provide encouragement, and cheer them on.

Ideally, your Inspiration Group will gather around a common purpose and offer a structure that ensures time is respected and well-utilized. Look for possibilities in your industry, community, or the area of your goal, such as a writing group through your local library (or join us in ASPIRE !)

2. Mastermind Group

While larger groups have their place, a small, intimate Mastermind Group provides an even higher level of growth. I have been in several masterminds over the years and imagine I always will be! We meet regularly, share wins and best practices, and each member gets time in the “spotlight seat”: they present an issue or challenge they are experiencing, then everyone else brainstorms, idea-shares, or even solves the problem. It’s really kind of magical!

Essentially, the premise is this: Each of us is smart individually, but when we put our brain power together, we essentially create a third mind – a ‘master mind’ – that is even better. I always find that to be true and leave each mastermind session feeling light and empowered!

One of my current mastermind groups. We've met monthly for 3 years!
One of my current mastermind groups. We have met monthly for 3 years!

3. Accountability Partner

You know how it goes: You decide to wake up early every morning and go for a run. You do great for a few days, then the snooze button becomes more appealing and you start talking yourself out of your goal… unless you know your neighbor is on the sidewalk waiting to run with you. That friend = accountability partner: You make a commitment, she makes sure you’re honoring it.

While I have a coach (see #4) for my professional goals, I love connecting with an accountability partner to keep other intentions moving forward. Right now, for example, I am in the midst of a health goal; I know what I need to do and how to do it – I just need someone to check in weekly to make sure I’m actually doing it. My sister and I are currently accountability partners and so far we are both rocking our commitments!

My current accountability partner (and sister) and I. If only all our check-ins took place on the beach!
My current accountability partner. If only all our check-ins took place on the beach!

4. Coach

I’ve been a certified coach for many years and still always have a coach myself. Nothing compares to the power of a trained, experienced professional coach to provide objectivity, serve as a high-level thought partner, hold the space for growth, and move you forward! While the groups I’ve mentioned have definitely elevated my business and life, it was when I hired my first coach that I truly saw my results skyrocket. I’ve hired countless coaches over the years since!

Each coach is unique in their approach and style, so I always think about what I most want to gain from the experience and then find the coach I believe will best help me get there. I have invested a hefty amount of money, time, and energy into coaches and will continue to do so, as little else brings such a significant return on investment! If you’re considering hiring a coach, check out these 5 questions so you can make a sound choice.

My current coach and I typically meet by phone but got to meet in-person recently!

5. YOU

As you already know, YOU are the common denominator and key ingredient to your success.  You have the gifts and strength to accomplish what matters most to you. Do what’s necessary to build your confidence, believe in your abilities, create a foundation of positivity, and design an action plan that moves you forward with intention, purpose, and delight.

Seek the support of the above four people for help! You can do it – but you don’t have to do it alone. See here and here for a few more thoughts.

You got this!
You got this!

Your Next Inspired Action

Various friends and family members can certainly support you, as can other goal-specific professionals (therapists, professional organizers, personal trainers, accountants, and so on). Just make sure you have the objectivity and expertise of your Bold Goal Dream Team in place, too! To support you in this, download this Bold Goal Dream Team worksheet.

Brainstorm possibilities, narrow in on the best ones, then start building your Bold Goal Dream Team. Watch your results improve and the entire process become more fun, too! Let your team support you in turning dreams into goals and goals into reality.

My Favorite Books of 2017

Christi Hegstad January 3rd, 2018

When you are an avid reader, you often find yourself in the midst of big, deep, difficult questions, such as:

Can I let go of all other responsibilities today and just read?

Do I stop buying books, or do I start buying more bookshelves?

What on earth am I going to read next?

Other people will also ask you hard things, including the most challenging of all for a voracious reader:

What’s your favorite book?

I typically respond to that question with various questions of my own: What genre? Favorite as in inspiring or as in a gripping story or as in a thought-changer? Classic or contemporary? etc., then offer a top ten list of sorts. But at the end of each year, I do try to generate a short-list of favorites read that year – hence today’s blog.

A few disclaimers:

* This list includes only books I read for the first time in 2017 – so the excellent books we discuss in the ASPIRE Success Club, for example, are not included.

* I utilize a highly-specific and technical rating system to generate this list, involving a handwritten book journal and foil stars. 🙂

IMG_5295

* I’m only including nonfiction books (which is what I mostly read) on this list, however I will share my fiction faves later this week on Instagram. (Side note: If you’re a book lover, let’s connect on Insta! I post most books I read [except the ones I dislike] along with a brief description of my thoughts and takeaways.)

OK, enough chit-chat – let’s dig into my 3 favorite nonfiction books of 2017:

Option B by Sheryl Sandberg and Adam Grant (Penguin Random House, 2017).

If you ask someone what to read next, how often do you expect them to recommend a book about navigating grief? Since reading Option B, I have actually done this often. Powerful, practical, and beautifully written, this book is a terrific resource for anyone who has ever experienced adversity or loss, or who may experience it in the future. It’s also invaluable for those wishing to support others through difficult times, such as family members, leaders, friends, and coworkers.

You can read my experience (and it truly was an experience) with this book here.

IMG_2500

Of Mess & Moxie by Jen Hatmaker (HarperCollins, 2017).

When we discuss books in the ASPIRE Success Club, members frequently make two points: 1) “I wish I had read this when I was younger,” and 2) “Until reading/discussing this book, I thought it [whatever ‘it’ the book addresses] was just me.” I experienced both of these when reading this hilarious, heartwarming, insightful, and affirming book!

Hatmaker has the unique ability to make the reader laugh, cry, and say, “Oh my gosh, YES!” all within the same page. I actually didn’t highlight much in this one – it read so much like a story! – but one of my favorite lines:

“There is no scarcity in creativity… There is no such thing as too much wisdom and literature and story and craftsmanship. There is room for you.” (p99)

IMG_4512

The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking (William Morrow, 2017).

A surprise hit! I’ve been somewhat obsessed with Denmark ever since reading about its happiness factor in Dan Buettner’s book, Thrive (one of my 2012 favorite books, actually – learn more here). This quick little book shared the basics of hygge, marked by things such as candles, books, music, cozy quilts, warm socks. In a nutshell, “Hygge is about giving your responsible, stressed-out, achiever adult a break. Relax. Just for a little while” (p105). That’s exactly what I did when reading this book, and the feeling continued well after I closed the back cover.

You can read my reaction here (if the link doesn’t get you there, scroll down my Instagram feed to March 10, 2017).

IMG_5296

As a literacy advocate, one of my favorite things to hear (and a big reason why I post books so often on Instagram) is someone saying they read a book because of my recommendation. If this list prompts you to read something new, please let me know! And feel free to share YOUR top books of 2017 below or on Instagram or Facebook. Happy Reading, friends!

Want to see my favorite books from the past several years? You can find them by year: 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012. Join us for incredible book discussions and much more in the ASPIRE Success Club!

What’s Your Intention For Today?

Christi Hegstad October 14th, 2017

What do you do upon awakening each morning?

If you tend to reach for your phone to check email or social media, I have an alternative suggestion. It may take as little as 5 seconds but could change your entire day.

Try setting an intention for the day.

When you first wake up, before you step out of bed, choose a word that you want to represent you for the day.

For example, maybe you have an incredibly busy schedule ahead – you might choose the intention of ‘peaceful’ or ‘energized.’

Maybe you have some potentially volatile meetings on the calendar – your intention might be ‘calm’ or ‘graceful.’

Some other intentions might include ‘smile,’ ‘gratitude,’ ‘leader,’ ‘inspired,’ or ‘clear.’

Choose a word that captures who and how you want to be in the world, repeat it to yourself a few times, then call it to mind whenever you think of it throughout the day. You may be surprised what a difference this makes in terms of your mood, attitude, and how you carry yourself throughout the day!

Your best intentions stem from your purpose! Clarify yours at Spark on November 3 – click here for details!
