How To Know You’re Heading In The Right Direction

Christi Hegstad November 9th, 2019

“I won’t always know where I’m going – but I can always know whether I’m going in the right direction.”

Bill Burnett + Dave Evans

How do you feel about this statement?

When I first read it in their excellent book, Designing Your Life, I’ll admit – it didn’t sit well with me. I want to know where I’m going *and* that I’m going in the right direction. I also like to know the route in advance, the amount of time it will take, what playlist or podcast I’ll have going…

I like to pretend I’m in control, I guess. ?

But the more I sat with this statement, the more I remembered that the direction, and the journey itself, guide us just as much as the destination. We can (and I definitely encourage you to) have a clear vision for our work and life. We can have meaningful Bold Goals and detailed action plans and checkpoints along the way.

And still, life will throw us some curveballs that we will need to decide, in the moment, how best to navigate.

How do we head in the right direction if plans change unexpectedly?

We check in with our purpose. We touch base with the people who know our hearts. We make decisions in favor of our core values and desired future rather than on current trends or past mistakes or what everyone else is doing.

If you’re in a season of uncertainty, check in with yourself. Get clear on who you are and what matters most. And trust that even though the path may seem unclear, if you are following your values and honoring your purpose, you are heading in the right direction. ??

* Decluttered her home and put it on the market

And that’s just for starters!

How To Engage In Meaningful Work

Christi Hegstad November 3rd, 2019
“It’s not enough just to get things done.
You have to help people do more of the work
 that has impact and meaning.”
Michael Bungay Stanier

How meaningful is your work? How purposeful are your daily actions?

I once worked with a client who began by calling himself a ‘desk jockey,’ saying he only entered data and pushed papers and handled unhappy phone calls. “Not much meaning in that,” he shared.

By the end of our work together, however, he was no longer calling himself a desk jockey – but rather someone whose work saves lives.

No, he did not switch careers, organizations, or even most of his tasks.

What he did switch was the meaning and purpose he brought to, and sought from, the work. He connected to the bigger picture, saw the ripple effect he set in motion, and realized he – like every one of us – makes a difference.

This week, connect your work to the bigger picture.

You can go about this in a couple of ways:

First, consider – in detail – the potential ripple effect of what you do. Maybe you help an unhappy customer find a resolution, and maybe she then returns to work in a more positive and solution-oriented mood as a result, and maybe she helps a coworker solve a problem, and maybe that coworker goes home and speaks more gently to his family … on and on and on.

Never underestimate the power of your ripple effect!

The second way: Simply decide that your work is meaningful. Then set about finding the evidence and creating the ways to prove that decision true.

The ASPIRE Success Club will be delving into topics like this next year, and enrollment is now open – but only for a few weeks! Click here to join us!

Leading With Joy And Contentment

Christi Hegstad November 1st, 2019

Do you easily say ‘no’ to things that don’t fulfill your bigger ‘yes’?

The topic of priorities can be confusing: Do we focus on daily priorities or life. priorities? How do we actually schedule priorities when our calendars are already so full? What about the unexpected things that pop up on any (every) given day?

Lots of things in life are important. But they can’t all be equally important, all at the same time, and still allow us to live with a sense of meaning and purpose.

This week, clarify your bigger ‘yes’.

When you know your top priorities, you can much more easily design your life around them, regardless of how busy your schedule might be.

You can confidently say ‘no’ to things without experiencing FOMO (fear of missing out).

You can wake up focused and go to bed fulfilled, knowing you’ve intentionally put first things first.

Experience the joy and contentment that comes with deciding what matters most and honoring that. If you need help, join us in the ASPIRE Success Club (enrollment open Nov 1 – 30!) or contact me about coaching!

10 Ways To Step Up Your Motivation

Christi Hegstad October 22nd, 2019

Last week my daughter, Brittany, ran the Chicago Marathon – an incredible test of endurance, both physical and mental. You have to have high levels of motivation to complete a feat like that, am I right?

And that motivation isn’t just a one-time deal on race day, either. Months of preparation, training, and recommitting to the goal are required – just like with other Bold Goals we set for ourselves. Surely you can expect some “I just don’t feel like it” days now and then.

What do you do on those days? What if those days turn into weeks?

As I’ve shared many times before, definitely surround yourself with support and reach out for help. In addition, the following ten ideas can provide lasting and repeatable sources of motivation whether your goal involves a marathon, a business, a home project, or virtually anything else!

Marathon, black silhouettes of runners on the sunset

1. Recall a peak experience.
When did you achieve an important goal, complete a significant project, or truly feel ‘in the zone’? Call to mind a moment from your past that had you feeling on top of the world, then tease it apart for clues that you can apply to your current goal. This works especially well if you sometimes lost motivation or felt adrift with that earlier event, too.
2. Ask forward-moving questions.
The quality of our answers – and ultimately, our behaviors – depends on the quality of our questions. Ask yourself powerful ones! For example: “How can I infuse new life into this goal / role?” or “What is one thing I can do in the next 24 hours to boost my motivation?” Looking at #1 above, you might ask, “What helped me persevere when things got difficult back then?”
3. Clarify your focus.
Decreased motivation often accompanies increased scattered-ness. Locke & Latham, pioneering researchers in goal-setting motivation, repeatedly discussed the importance of clarity and specificity with goals. Step back, take an honest look at where you are investing your time and energy, and – like a laser – narrow your focus to intensify your results.

overcome the obstacles of your life, hurdle design

4. Stay in your own lane.
Comparing yourself to others is now easier than ever, yet Teddy Roosevelt’s words still ring true: It robs us of joy. Instead of wishing you had what someone else has, send them blessings and let their example serve as inspiration: “If they can do it, so can I!”
5. Do something for the first time.
It’s possible you’ve fallen into a bit of a rut. Try a new activity and let the excitement of learning something new – as well as perhaps the push out of your comfort zone – prompt your motivation in other areas. And don’t worry about doing the new thing perfectly – that’s definitely not a requirement!

6. Find perspective.

You might find perspective by focusing on your next step instead of all the miles you have yet to run. Or in taking an eagle’s view of what you’re aiming for; my doctorate took several years to earn, for example, but in the grand scope of my lifetime, that’s a mere blip. A little perspective can go a long way.

Why Purpose Reason Definition

7. Know your ‘why’ and revisit it often.

In the process of training for and running the marathon, Brittany raised a ton of funds and support for children with cancer. “Doing it for a cause greater than myself was a huge motivator!” she told me. Whether it’s your driving purpose for a particular goal and/or for your overall life, reconnect with your ‘why’ frequently and fully.

8. Pour into others.

It’s funny how you can massively boost your own motivation by helping others boost theirs! Volunteer, encourage, support, teach, empower … find ways to help others get motivated, and watch what happens to your own motivation in the process.

Should Would Could Did card with colorful background

9. Imagine your own advice.

If you feel low on motivation or discouraged at your progress, imagine your child, best friend, or valued employee coming to you for advice with that same problem. What would you advise them? How would you encourage them? Record what you would tell them.

Then, use that advice yourself.

10. Decide, commit, act, repeat.

While inspiration is wonderful, waiting around for it before you take action could leave you at a standstill for ages. So could waiting for the perfect time, the ideal conditions, the guarantee of success. Decide to pursue your purposeful goal, commit to doing what’s necessary, take action, and repeat. Often.

The common denominator: Look within for motivation. You can’t control whether someone applauds you or ‘likes’ your post or thanks you for your effort, and if you rely on those externals to keep you motivated, you may find yourself disappointed. Determine what will bring about your internal applause instead.

As we say in our ASPIRE Success Club meetings, we’re not just here to learn – we’re here to implement. Which of the ten ideas above will you put into action first?

Go For The Win – Or Wait Until Next Year?

Christi Hegstad October 20th, 2019

A while ago, members of the ASPIRE Success Club volunteered with the Special Olympics. Some of us had done so before, and others were experiencing this powerful event for the first time. The heart and determination the athletes demonstrated was so inspiring!

It was during that event that I learned the Special Olympics motto. I love its succinctness, power, and applicability in so many life areas.

We’re on the homestretch of 2019, friends. Maybe you’re questioning whether or not you can truly achieve the goals you’ve set. Maybe you’re doubting yourself or thinking, “Well, maybe next year.”

This week, go for the win.

Believe in yourself.

Get re-motivated.

Reach out for help.

Instead of spending precious energy wondering and doubting and worrying, spend it going for the win.

And even if you don’t get the win, you can celebrate the fact that you gave it your all!

Succeeding In A Saturated Market

Christi Hegstad October 13th, 2019

“But there are already so many authors / coaches / personal trainers / financial planners / bloggers / ________ out there. The market is saturated. What could I possibly bring to the table?”

Does this, or a similar thought, keep you from pursuing an idea or goal?

Maybe there are a ton of people already in your field or doing what you want to do. So what? Rather than discourage you, let it remind you that clearly a lot more people need what you have to offer!

And no one can do the thing in your unique and purposeful way.

This week, just do the thing.

Publish the blog.

Announce the event.

Submit the proposal.

Teach the class.

Apply for the role.

Create the art.

Trust me, the world needs your unique, positive imprint. We want to benefit from your gifts, and we want to see you succeed!

What Matters Most In Your Workday?

Christi Hegstad October 6th, 2019

How much of your typical workday focuses on what matters most?

To accurately answer this, you need to know what matters most.

As Laura Vanderkam wrote,

“You can have a great system for organizing email or scheduling daily conference calls on various projects, but I’m guessing at your retirement dinner, people won’t talk about your pristine in-box or packed schedule.”

What will they talk about at your retirement dinner?

What do you want them to talk about?

This week, list your top work priorities for the remainder of the year.

If you often spend your day lost in email or largely in ‘reactive mode’, the first step toward change is to determine your priorities. What results do you want to achieve? Where do you most want to invest your precious time? What will allow you to make your difference?

Categories to consider, for starters:

* Projects to complete

* Leaders to develop

* Strategic planning to engage

* Relationships to strengthen

* Mindset / personal skills to build

* Classes or certifications to finish

* Partnerships to create

Once you’ve determined your current priorities, you can start making shifts to bring the ideal to fruition – let me know if you’d like help with that!

5+ Ways To Address Impostor Syndrome

Christi Hegstad October 2nd, 2019

“When I won the Oscar, I thought it was a fluke. I thought everybody would find out, and they’d take it back… ‘Excuse me, we meant to give that to someone else. That was going to Meryl Streep.'” – Jodie Foster

My blog and social media posts last week on impostor syndrome sparked a great deal of discussion. Interestingly, none of it public.

But does that come as any surprise? Although some reports show 70% or more of us experience impostor syndrome, we typically feel like we’re the only ones. I can think of countless coaching clients who have shared, shyly and almost under their breath, inklings of impostor syndrome; I can recall a number of times I have shared similar thoughts with my coach, too.

I vividly remember, for example, the first time I hosted Spark, a public event that I subsequently held for many years. I sent the email announcement, then immediately closed my laptop and walked away, thoughts of “What if no one registers? Who am I to put on an event like this?” running through my head.

And then, even in Spark’s 5th year and after registrations had sold out nearly every year prior, thinking, “Yes, maybe it will sell out – but what if no one shows up?”

Or, what if they show up and think I don’t know what I’m talking about?

Or, what if they think I know what I’m talking about but… and on and on and on.

Impostor syndrome, if nothing else, is exhausting.

Changing The Story

I remember reading that Maya Angelou – a prolific author, poet, and world-changer in so many ways – sometimes worried, even after numerous publications and accolades, that she had “run a game on everybody, and they’re going to find me out.”

Maya Angelou!

So step #1 in addressing impostor syndrome is recognizing that you’re not alone.

From there, a variety of internal, practical, and mindset tips can minimize impostor syndrome. We often delve deep into this work through coaching, but here are a few ideas to help you get started:

1. Create a “Making A Difference” file.

Set up an email folder called “Making A Difference” or “Proof Positive” or something that speaks to you. Then, every time you get a message from someone thanking you, acknowledging a job well done, or anything else that feels uplifting, store it in the file. You can also include certifications, volunteer hours, items you’ve published, or other helpful documentation.

On days when you question yourself, pour a cup of coffee, open the file, and let the words remind you of what you already know: You make a difference.

Side note: Keep a physical copy in your journal or planner as well.

2. Take an action.

One of the biggest takeaways from The Confidence Code, an excellent book by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman that we discussed in-depth in the ASPIRE Success Club a few years ago, is actually the title of one of their chapters: Do More, Think Less.

“Confidence is linked to doing,” they write. “Think less, take action, be authentic.”

This is especially helpful if you lean towards overthinking. Check in with your values, make a decision, then take an action in favor of that decision.

3. Accept compliments graciously.

It seems like such a small detail, but wow does it make a difference! Instead of being self-deprecating or brushing aside compliments as if they don’t apply to you, simply say, “Thank you.” End of story.

What changed this for me was realizing that whenever I pushed aside a compliment with something like, “Oh, but I messed up three times!” or even “This old thing? I’m almost embarrassed to wear it!”, I was basically saying to the complimenter, “You are wrong.” That seems downright rude, and I strive not to be rude whenever possible.

Once you begin accepting compliments with a simple ‘Thank you,’ the next step is to start believing them!

Vector illustration of cute white cat holding a banner THANK YOU!

4. Keep a Success Journal.

This action literally takes less than two minutes per day but can change your entire perspective.

Every afternoon before you leave work or every night before you go to bed, jot down one ‘win’ you experienced that day. Maybe you completed something that’s lingered on your to-do list, or you had a great conversation with your child, or you harvested a tomato from the plant you’ve diligently been cultivating. YOU get to decide what constitutes a win, and make a quick note of it.

Soon, you will have an entire list of wins to counteract any impostor-y thoughts.

5. Set up visual cues.

Turning to things outside of your own head can be especially helpful when the inside of your head wants to focus on doubt.

Strategically place items that remind you of your strength, courage, ability, and purpose in frequently-seen spaces (desk, bathroom mirror, phone wallpaper, planner, etc). For example, I had a greeting card on my desk for ages that included the Joan of Arc line, “I am not afraid. I was born to do this.” Seeing visual anchors like these, including your Success Journal, helps redirect your thoughts in the moment.

Born To Do This Not Afraid Joan of Arc Card

I have coached people who feed the hungry, run multi-million dollar budgets, speak on huge stages, literally save lives every day … and who still hear a voice that asks, “Who do you think you are?” So if you hear it too, you’re in good company.

The above tips can help quiet that voice, as can the support of a coach. In addition, resources like the previously mentioned Confidence Code by Kay & Shipman and Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg can prove insightful. You can even find some quick celebrity thoughts on impostor syndrome here.

Next time you hear that voice asking, “Who do you think you are?” – take it as an opportunity instead of a threat. Answer it with a resounding description of your strengths and actions, culled from the above tips.

I’ll bet you soon find that critical voice getting quieter and quieter as you put more and more of your greatness out into the world!

The Antidote To Distraction

Christi Hegstad September 30th, 2019

If you were given four solid, uninterrupted hours in a quiet room all by yourself, with no responsibilities other than the one project you’ve been wanting to finish, how would that feel?

And, be honest: How much time would pass before your mind started wandering or you found yourself reaching for your phone?

This quarter, the ASPIRE Success Club has been discussing topics of focus, presence, and deep work. While we strategized around external distractions, we also dedicated time to those that come from within.

Turns out there are just as many! But we can do something about nearly all distractions –  and good thing, because they likely won’t disappear anytime soon.

This week, identify what feeds your spirit – and why.

Maybe it’s finishing that aforementioned project – because it benefits others and offers you a sense of accomplishment.

Maybe it’s meeting a friend for a walk – because you love meaningful conversation and want to strengthen your relationship.

Maybe it’s painting or cross-stitching or baking pumpkin bread – because creating something with your hands is so intrinsically satisfying.

How will you feed your spirit – and perhaps quiet some distraction – this week?
