WHY Do You Do What You Do?

Christi Hegstad July 22nd, 2015

“The person who knows ‘how’ will always have a job. The person who knows ‘why’ will always be his boss.”

Diane Ravitch

Coaching Tip for the Week:

Why do you do the work you do?

If you respond with “Because I get paid” or “It’s what I went to school for,” I’m here to challenge you. Those things are nice and important, but for most, they’re just not enough.

We yearn for more, and we – and our workplaces – suffer when we don’t find it.

In order to work with purpose, you need to know your purpose.

Once you know your ‘why,’ it will give you stamina through challenges, focus through nebulousness, clarity through uncertainty. It will anchor you.

This week, ask yourself ‘why.’ And do it at least a dozen times.

Why so many times? To get beyond the surface to the true heart of the matter.

With this exercise, one of my coaching clients – a banker on the verge of burnout – discovered that his why wasn’t just navigating finances and lending money. His why was helping people clarify their dreams – then watching them light up as he helped make them come true!

Ahhhhh. So much more powerful than, “Because I get paid”!

Boost Your (& Your Team’s) Energy

Christi Hegstad July 16th, 2015

Whether it’s the summertime humidity, vacation recuperation, or just a midyear slump, motivation and energy at work often tend to go into hiding this time of year. To help my coaching clients thwart this, I recently sent them a MidYear Success Supercharge exercise. One of the reflective questions in this program:

What infuses you with energy?

We all need a few tricks up our sleeves for those times we just don’t feel like doing what we need to do. Here are a few ideas to boost your – and your team’s – energy:

3 Authors Who Helped Shape My Business

Christi Hegstad July 2nd, 2015

This post was originally published by the Des Moines Business Record.

About 13 years ago when I made the decision to start a business, I knew I needed to reach out to experts, small business resources, and other entrepreneurs. Before making those important connections, however, I turned to books. Not so much for business expertise, but to help me refine what exactly I intended to do and for whom.

Several of my executive coaching clients have asked what books helped shape my business in those early years and beyond. Three authors quickly come to mind and, along with them, a one-word summary of what I took away from their work:

Stephen Covey

While most known for The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, it was his later book, First Things First, that proved an even bigger game-changer for me. With this book’s guidance, I wrote my personal mission statement, clearly defined my values and priorities, and made the conscious decision to design my business – and my life – around what matters most. Covey’s approach to personal leadership and time management have truly stood the test of time.

One-Word SummaryValues

Favorite Line: “Be a light, not a judge. Be a model, not a critic.”

Also RecommendedThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families, Principle-Centered Leadership.

Marcus Buckingham

When marketing experts talk about raving fans, I would qualify as one of Marcus Buckingham’s. I’ve led book club discussions around his work, purchased his Strengths Essentials Kits and other products, and invested in coaching from his company. Now, Discover Your Strengths reiterates that when we focus on strengths, we become more productive, heighten our engagement, and are able to flourish with meaning and purpose.

One-Word SummaryStrengths

Favorite Line: “Look inside yourself, try to identify your strongest threads, reinforce them with practice and learning, and then either find or carve out a role that draws on those strengths every day. When you do, you will be more productive, more fulfilled, and more successful.”

Also RecommendedFirst, Break All The Rules; Go Put Your Strengths To Work; Find Your Strongest Life.

Mary Kay Ash

My first introduction to Mary Kay came at a young age when my mom sold the products; I can still picture Mom’s pink notepad with “The 6 Most Important Things I Must Do” at the top of each page. What I appreciate most about Mary Kay – and what she lays out beautifully inThe Mary Kay Way – is her clarity and focus on priorities, not only for herself but for her entire company. Personally and in her business, she defined her top three priorities as 1) God, 2) Family, and 3) Career – in that order, without question.

One-Word SummaryPriorities

Favorite Line: “Whenever I meet someone, I try to imagine him or her wearing an invisible sign that says, ‘Make me feel important.’”

Also RecommendedMore Than A Pink Cadillac by Jim Underwood; any of Mary Kay’s early material.

Christi Hegstad MAP Inc HeadshotCOACH’S CHALLENGE:

Choose your leadership legacy. If you wrote a book, what would the “one-word summary” be? What word or phrase do you want to come to mind when people think of you?

Decide how you want to be remembered as a leader – what I call your leadership legacy. Then, intentionally start living, working, and leading in alignment with your legacy.

Remember: You choose your leadership legacy by how you choose to lead each and every day.

What’s your leadership legacy word or one-word summary? Share in the comments below!

3 Ways To Grow Your Career This Summer

Christi Hegstad June 11th, 2015

If someone comes to your house this time of year, are they likely to find you in the garden? We are beginning to enjoy some of the early vegetables from ours. I always anxiously await that first ripe tomato, fresh off the vine. Little compares to that naturally sweet treat!

While the hot summer sun often encourages a slower pace, don’t assume your career or business must lie dormant for the next three months. Last July – the month typically known for vacations – proved the most fruitful of the year for several of my clients! They approached the month with purpose and intention and yielded terrific results – while also having plenty of time to sip lemonade on the back porch.

Regardless of the seasonal cycles of your line of work, summer is an ideal time to grow your career. Here are three ways to plant the seeds for meaning, purpose, and inspiration:

1. Watch TED Talks

The best ideas from some of the best minds in less than 20 minutes! I often flip these on while making dinner, folding laundry, or when I arrive early to a meeting. Visit www.TED.com and search topics or thought leaders of interest. A few of my favorites:Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe by Simon Sinek, The Power of Introverts by Susan Cain, The Happy Secret To Better Work by Shawn Achor, and a recent find, How To Fix A Broken School by Linda Cliatt-Wayman.

2. Read books

Many of my friends and colleagues like nothing better than lounging on a summer day with a powerful, thought-provoking book (or, periodically, a don’t-make-me-think one). Although asking me my favorite book will leave me flustered for days ;-), three have truly helped shape me and my business. You can read about them in my recent article for the Des Moines Business Record (click here).

3. Plan your growth

Just like a well-cared-for garden will likely produce more than one that’s left to its own devices, an intentional career will flourish more quickly and seamlessly as well. Start by prioritizing your day and blocking time for that which matters most. If you want help with this (as well as access to the signature planning / tracking tools I have used for years), join us for our upcoming session, Run Your Day (So It Doesn’t Run You!)Click here for details and to enroll.

And I wasn’t kidding about that time on the back porch with a frosty lemonade. While the “lazy, hazy days of summer” might seem an enigma, you definitely need some downtime to replenish and refresh. Plant your seeds for growth, nurture as needed, and prepare to reap a bountiful harvest!

To your meaningful career and purposeful life!

“Not My Problem”: Time To Turn Away, Or Roll Up Your Sleeves?

Christi Hegstad May 25th, 2015

“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say, ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”

Fred Rogers

Coaching Tip for the Week:

How many times have you seen a story on the news or heard a colleague share an ongoing challenge and thought, “Someone should do something?”

How often do you remind yourself that you are someone?

We live in an amazing world, but not a perfect one. Opportunities for making a positive difference exist everywhere we turn.

This is a great responsibility, and also a great blessing. And, as I often need to remind the leaders I coach, you don’t need to go it alone. Other heroes may be just waiting for you to reach out to them to help you change the world.

This week, be someone that does something. If an issue comes up at work that you can help solve, take the initiative – even if it’s “not your job.”

If you see someone in need of help, offer your assistance.

If you hear about a charitable opportunity that tugs at your heartstrings, participate or spread the word or donate.

As Gandhi so sagely advised, be the change you wish to see in the world.

Is Your Desire To Live Without Regret Bigger Than Your Fear?

Christi Hegstad May 21st, 2015

How do you go from singing into your hairbrush as a child to, three decades later, stepping onstage and singing for upwards of 1,500 people?

I recently had the opportunity to ask this and several other questions to Jennifer Goveia as part of the ASPIRE Success Club‘s Adventures In Boldness interview series. Jennifer, an HR professional with State Farm Insurance by day and the lead singer of Illinois-based band Rosetta Stone by night, shared her perspectives on courage, confidence, and living a life with no regrets. She openly shared with us how her frightening-yet-purposeful adventures have shaped who she is today and made a difference for others in the process.

A few of Jennifer’s inspiring suggestions:

1. Seize the opportunity, even before you’re ready.

Jennifer has loved singing her entire life but, until age 33, her experience consisted of the aforementioned hairbrush, solo car rides, and the like. When she learned that a local band was looking for new lead vocals, she decided to audition. “They actually had someone else in mind for the part,” Jennifer shared. “It was my first time singing in front of others, and I was terrified. But I also really wanted the position!”

Rather than feel unqualified or give in to her fear, Jennifer practiced, prepared, and rocked the audition – and has been singing onstage ever since.

2. Voice your praise.

Although Jennifer had a passion for singing, it wasn’t until someone else pointed out her potential that she started thinking about doing it publicly. “I was singing in the car, and my husband-to-be acknowledged my voice,” remembered Jennifer. “I’ve always had the passion for music, but lacked the confidence. His comments started planting those seeds of confidence in me, and it wasn’t long after that everything else transpired.”

We often don’t realize how powerfully our words impact others, and Jennifer’s story serves as an important reminder. One positive, genuine piece of praise can truly alter the course of someone’s life.

3. Measure your fear against possible regret.

“Even though I was excited, the first time I went on stage I had all kinds of fearful thoughts,” Jennifer recalled. “I remember being backstage thinking, ‘Let me disappear! Let them cancel the show!’ Preparation and positive reinforcement helped, but it was still scary.

“And what it came down to for me was this: I asked myself, ‘What if I looked back at the end of my life and realize I didn’t even try this? How would I feel?’ For me, the answer was regret, disappointment. My desire to live without that regret was bigger than my fear.”

In ASPIRE, we have been discussing vulnerability, comparison, and handling the critics – as there are always going to be some. Jennifer’s response to this topic was so profound, I wrote it on my white board in my office and hope it resonates with you too:

“You can’t control what other people say. You can, however, control the volume.”

Whether you work in HR for a Fortune 50 company or sing lead vocals for a band (or both, like Jennifer!), consider how you can play bigger in your role. What exciting opportunity can you seize – even if you’re not 100% ready yet? Whom can you praise and start planting seeds of confidence? When you look back over your life, what do you want to make sure you gave a shot?

Let Jennifer’s experience inspire and motivate you to have your own Adventures In Boldness!

The Imaginary Sign That Changes Everything

Christi Hegstad May 11th, 2015

“Pretend that every single person you meet has a sign around his or her neck that says, ‘Make me feel important.'”
Mary Kay Ash

Coaching Tip for the Week:

This is one of my all-time favorite quotes by one of my all-time favorite business owners. It promotes such a terrific way of being, doesn’t it?

Think about her suggestion for a moment. How might living this out – even for a day – change the people around you?

Do you think it could even alter the entire course of someone’s life?

This may sound idealistic, but it’s absolutely possible and happens frequently. We’ve all heard stories of people who felt down and out, then one kind gesture or statement or action changed their entire perspective. You could be the catalyst that turns their life around.

What have you got to lose?

This week, envision that sign on everyone you encounter, and act accordingly. Your family members, coworkers, boss, baristas, servers, librarians, mail carriers, pet groomers…everyone. Decide in the moment what will make him or her feel important, then act on that decision.

Too often we think about offering a compliment or sharing a kind word or saying “thank you” for someone’s service…and thinking is as far as we get. Let’s take it a step further this week! I’ll do it too. And I would love to hear how it goes for you. 🙂

Forget Time Management – You Need To Go Deeper

Christi Hegstad April 30th, 2015

While out for a walk earlier this week, I spotted the sign pictured here. You really can’t argue with Wright’s logic, can you? 😉

Do you have the time to walk wherever you’d like? How about to play with your family, to engage in a hobby, or even to quietly think through a challenge at work?

I initially planned for this article to include ways to save time, create time, and master time. But you know what? You can find those tips and tricks everywhere (including several of my previous blogs, like here and here for example).

I think we need to go deeper.

Rather than offer suggestions and share strategies, let me take a coaching approach and help you think about your time differently. Consider these questions, perhaps even using them as journal prompts or conversation starters with your team:

  1. If I awarded you an extra 5 hours per week, how would you spend it? (Assume sleep and all basic needs are met.)
  2. On what do you spend more time than you’d like?
  3. What engages you so deeply, you lose track of time?
  4. If I looked at your calendar and to-do list, what would I consider your most important priorities?
  5. What one thing do you really wish you had more time for?
Of course, I can’t leave you there without asking:

What will you do about it?

Responding to these questions connects you with your deeper motivation – much more likely to prompt change than a checklist of do’s and don’t’s. If you don’t know how to answer one or more of those questions, ponder a bit while out on a walk or in a journal.

And if one of the questions makes you particularly uncomfortable, that might indicate a terrific starting point for change.

Yes, time flies. But as the saying goes, you’re the pilot. Decide who and what matters most, commit to making a change, get the accountability you need, and watch things transform. You might actually feel like you’ve been given those 5 extra hours per week, simply because of your proactive and intentional steps!

COACH CHRISTI’S CHALLENGE: Set an appointment with yourself to focus on a new, energizing, intentional schedule.

Revisit your priorities and your responses to the above questions, then commit to one shift in your schedule that will start bringing you a sense of meaning and purpose: maybe not checking email until 9am, setting up “No-Meeting Mondays,” or regularly walking with a friend over lunch.

Let me know how it goes!

What shift will you make to become more intentional with your time? Share your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter

Courage, Passion, and Making a Significant Difference: Meet Melissa Clarke-Wharff

Christi Hegstad April 15th, 2015

Imagine your active 8-year-old son unexpectedly suffers multiple strokes, after which he must re-learn how to do pretty much everything. An avid sports fan his entire young life, you decide to take him to an adaptive sports facility so he can engage in his passion while healing – only to discover no such facility exists.

What do you do?

If you’re Melissa Clarke-Wharff, you create that facility. Not only for your son, but for any of the 28,000 children in your community that want to play but, for various reasons, cannot operate at full speed.

After 25 years in the hospitality industry, Melissa left her “safe” job to create Courage League Sports, a nonprofit with a very clear vision: Every child deserves to play. With a small but dedicated staff, numerous volunteers, and support from her entire network, Melissa has grown the registered nonprofit to help over 200 families play – a number that continues to increase as they collaborate more with area organizations and schools.

Melissa took time from her busy, fulfilling schedule recently to share her journey with the ASPIRE Success Club. A few of her many lessons imparted:

Jump In & Get Started. Melissa didn’t have all the answers when she began this project, but she had passion, dedication, and was a “mom on a mission.” Rather than waiting until she had everything figured out or until that elusive “perfect time,” Melissa just took a step – and then another, and another. “You’ve got to put yourself out there,” Melissa shares. “Be flexible, keep a good sense of humor, and do what you can and need to do.”

Develop A Strong Support System. Having good support is a non-negotiable when pursuing your passion. For Melissa, support comes from her family, team, colleagues, board of directors, and more. From providing expertise to talking through fears to volunteering at the facility, Melissa isn’t sure where she’d be with her strong support network. “They help me look at things in a different way,” she explains.

Let Inspiration Guide You. Challenges arise, unexpected barriers appear, things get tough. What keeps a person moving through the trials? For Melissa, inspiration comes from several places: knowing her work makes a difference, doing the right thing, modeling how one can turn a passion into a reality. Most of all, her son, now age 14, inspires her: “Jack has had 30 leg surgeries over the past 5 years. I find strength in his strength. If he can endure what he does, then I can do what I’m doing.”

“If you think something will make a difference,” Melissa advises, “you’ve got to go with it.” Start somewhere. Surround yourself with support. Pay attention to your inspiration.

And if (when) the going gets tough, think of Melissa, Jack, and all the athletes and Courage League Sports – and let their bravery inspire yours!

Uncommon Leadership: Lessons From Lady Gaga

Christi Hegstad April 8th, 2015

This article was originally published on the Des Moines Business Record blog.

When you think of Lady Gaga, what comes to mind? Probably her musical talent (six Grammy awards so far), perhaps her outrageous wardrobe (meat dress, anyone?), maybe her unusual antics (the infamous awards show entrance in a giant egg). Only 28 years old and she has certainly made a name for herself.

But as Jackie Huba outlines in her book,Monster Loyalty: How Lady Gaga Turns Followers Into Fanatics, there’s much more to Lady Gaga than meets the eye. In fact, she proves an excellent case study in authenticity, service, and powerful leadership.

Unfamiliar with the book when I picked it up, I had few expectations. I merely hoped to get a bit of insight into why Gaga does what she does, but the introduction set my aim higher: “Lady Gaga’s business sense impresses me,” writes Huba, “but her passion for changing the world for the better through any means possible is what truly inspired me to study her.” Page after page, Huba shows how Lady Gaga takes extraordinary measures to make a difference to the causes and people that matter most to her.

A few lessons in uncommon leadership from Lady Gaga:

Lady Gaga also reminds us of a key principle in leadership: it’s not about you. As it turns out, the meat dress, as well as her other attention-grabbing “stunts,” involve purposeful action: to support a cause, speak out against an injustice, or give a voice to those who might not otherwise be heard.

While you may not agree with nor want to attract the same kind of attention as Lady Gaga, her ability to connect deeply with and inspire her most engaged fans offers terrific leadership insight. “What I do [in my concerts],” she explained to MTV, “is, in essence, create an atmosphere for my fans where they don’t leave loving me, they leave loving themselves.”

Consider how you can more powerfully focus on those who matter most, start with why, and go big – all in service of a brighter, stronger world. Because remember: regardless of your title, fame, or the number of Grammys on your shelf, your leadership is not about you.

COACH’S CHALLENGE:

How can you step outside the norm in your leadership? Where could you make an inspiring splash or bring an unexpected delight to those who matter most? This month, step outside your comfort zone and take an uncommon action in service of those you lead.

Share your uncommon leadership ideas on Facebook and Twitter!
