How Will You Change The World Today?

Christi Hegstad October 20th, 2014

CLARITY KICKSTART: October 20, 2014

To admit that you begin the day planning to change the world certainly sounds grandiose, maybe even delusional. Yet I believe that you do change the world every day, whether you intend to or not. Often it only takes a small act to make a big difference.

Mark Sanborn

Coaching Tip for the Week:

So…how are you changing the world today?

I ask this question all the time. I have big dreams for our world and work every day to make this vision a reality, whether through my work, relationships, or even sending thousands of you this free positive message every Monday morning.

The fact is, you make a difference in the world daily – and you have been for years. Now, I encourage you to consciously decide every day – every moment – what kind of difference you want to make.

This week, do one thing every day to make a positive difference in the world. Tell a coworker how much you appreciate him. Pay for coffee for the person in line behind you. Write a note to a child telling her how much you believe in her.

Dream big. Start small. Take action today.

What’s Your Purpose? Insights From Simon Sinek’s Book, Start With Why

Christi Hegstad October 15th, 2014

This article was first published by Des Moines Business Record.

“I feel like a cog in a wheel. All I do is enter data. I never even talk with customers unless they’re upset. I feel so replaceable.”

As a leadership coach, I’ve heard this sentiment from many clients over the years. Does one of your employees feel this way?

Chances are, more than one does. Gallup studies tell us that 70 percent of employees are dissatisfied and/or disengaged at work, even top performers. A big reason for this – the motivator for starting my company, in fact – is that people feel disconnected from the bigger picture, the purpose. We long for meaning and purpose at work but often struggle to find it, and the results can be devastating to our economy, our relationships, and our human psyche.

Simon Sinek wrote his bestselling book Start With Why around the concept of knowing your purpose. “People don’t buy WHAT you do,” he argues fervently, “they buy WHY you do it.”

Inspiring leaders know that they must first clarify the why – the purpose – behind an initiative, product, or action. Once the why becomes clear, then the details (how, what) can take the front seat.

If you believe in inspiring people into action rather than manipulating, valuing people over numbers (including those with a dollar sign in front), and building a successful business with heart, you will devour this book.

In addition to offering practical tools for discerning your organization’s why, Sinek shares thought-provoking examples of purposeful organizations achieving extraordinary measures of success. Imagine working for a financial firm, for example, that awards its agents bonuses not based on production numbers but on the number of thank-you cards they send out!

While reading “Start With Why” I found myself often thinking back to one of Patrick Lencioni’s statements in his excellent resource, The Advantage: “All organizations exist to make people’s lives better… Every organization must contribute in some way to a better world for some group of people, because if it doesn’t, it will, and should, go out of business.”

Purposeful organizations don’t just happen by chance – they are intentionally built. A few questions, inspired by “Start With Why”, to help you move towards purpose:

Once you know your why, you can make decisions – including hiring choices – using purpose as your anchor. As Sinek writes, “When you fill an organization with good fits, those who believe what you believe, success just happens.”

This month, make clarifying your why a top priority. When you know your purpose, you have the foundation to become much more productive, streamlined, meaningful, and successful.

Start with why!

Adventures In Boldness: Teresa Capaldo

Christi Hegstad October 14th, 2014

Two years ago, on the verge of a milestone birthday, Teresa Capaldo found herself at a crossroads: She could continue on autopilot, working in a job she had begun to resent and that was negatively impacting her self-worth, family, and relationships.

Or, she could make a change.

“I was not seeing myself as worthy,” Teresa admitted in our recent interview with the ASPIRE Success Club, “and that was getting in my way.”

After deep soul-searching, personal healing, and conversations with the people she cares about most, Teresa decided to take a bold leap in the direction of her dreams. She started her business, TeresaCapaldo.com, and as a “straight-talk clarity strategist” helps multi-passionate online business starters crystallize their passion into clear, confident action.

Teresa shared many tips during our Adventures In Boldness interview, such as:

At the time of her bold leap, Teresa felt like she was being a bit selfish. But now, as she spends more time with her son and husband, creates healthy meals, and overall has more patience and joy, she has come to a valuable conclusion: “My ‘being selfish’ has improved my entire family.”

And, I would add, her delighted clients as well!

Get Ready To Fail!

Christi Hegstad October 13th, 2014

CLARITY KICKSTART: October 13, 2014

Each of us has to make a choice. Are we going to sleep life away, avoiding failure at all costs? Or are we going to wake up and realize this: Failure is simply a price we pay to achieve success.

John C. Maxwell

Coaching Tip for the Week:

When the possibility of failure exists, do you run away from it, run towards it, or stand still and brace yourself, waiting to see what happens?

I remember reading an interview with wildly successful entrepreneur Sara Blakely. She shared that at the dinner table each night, her dad would ask the kids what they failed at that day.

The worst response? “Nothing.” In his eyes, if you are not failing, you must not be trying anything new.

This week, be courageous, try something new, and give yourself permission to do it badly – even to fail. If the perfectionist in you clings tightly, give him/her the day off. (I experimented with this myself last week when I played the ukulele at Spark – see photos on our Facebook page!) Give yourself a pat on the back for trying something new and acknowledge what you learn from the experience, even if that means, “I learned how to better deal with failure.”

And from this point forward, whenever you encounter failure (as we all do), let it teach you rather than define you.

What will you give yourself permission to do badly? Share your thoughts below, on our Facebook page, or via Twitter!

To What Will You Say YES?

Christi Hegstad October 7th, 2014

CLARITY KICKSTART: October 6, 2014

Find a way to say YES to things.

…Even if it is a bit edgy, a bit out of your comfort zone, saying YES means you will do something new, meet someone new, and make a difference in your life, and likely in others’ lives as well.

…YES is a tiny word that can do big things. Say it often.

Eric Schmidt

Coaching Tip for the Week:

This week, say YES to a healthy opportunity in favor of your values, strengths, and vision. You can make a difference right where you are – through your work, your relationships, and your daily interactions with everyone you encounter – by saying YES to being the bold leader you are here to be.

THANK YOU to everyone who said YES to Spark on Friday! Hopefully today’s message means something a little extra to you. 🙂

The Butterfly Effect of Positivity

Christi Hegstad September 29th, 2014

CLARITY KICKSTART: September 29, 2014

A single butterfly flapping its wings can create a hurricane halfway around the world… In other words, one very small change can trigger a cascade of bigger ones.

Each one of us is like that butterfly. And each tiny move toward a more positive mindset can send ripples of positivity through our organizations, our families, and our communities.

Shawn Achor

Coaching Tip for the Week:

Are you sending ripples of positivity out into the world, your organization, your family?

Maybe you’re not outright screaming negativity from the mountaintops. But think about even the small ways you may dampen the mood:
  • Starting a meeting by focusing on problems.
  • Constantly telling people “Don’t do this or that.”
  • Talking about how tired you are.
  • Relying on sensational news stories as your topics of conversation.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: The leader sets the tone. And remember, YOU are a leader.

This week, be positive. Consciously choose words that lift people up. Start meetings focusing on wins before getting to the challenges. Be creative in conversation (asking people about their goals and dreams works wonders!). Send out a ripple of positivity and trust that it will spread as intended.

Positivity is a requirement at Spark! Final chance to enroll – click here!

When You’re Done With Feeling Afraid and Playing Small

Christi Hegstad September 22nd, 2014

CLARITY KICKSTART: September 22, 2014

I’d say the one thing we have in common is that we’re sick of feeling afraid. We want to dare greatly. We all want to be brave.

Brene Brown

Coaching Tip for the Week:

Where are you playing small?

Where are you not speaking up, not stepping forward, not putting yourself fully and wholeheartedly into the game?

These are tough questions to address honestly. But too many of us are hiding out in some way, not living and working up to our fullest potential and experiencing the levels of joy, meaning, and purpose that we could be. This is one of the primary reasons I began Spark.

We see this more now than ever: We’re afraid to speak up for fear that our words will be misconstrued and plastered across the internet. Or we hesitate to step into a role without having all the details figured out first.

We turn away rather than risk a mistake.

As a coach, my goal is to call you up to your greatness. I’m willing to bet that your true greatness is far beyond what you’ve imagined for yourself.

This week, be brave. Call yourself up to your greatness. Take an action that stretches you. Engage in a difficult but meaningful conversation. Enroll in a course, hire support, or step forward in an area where you’re tired of stepping back.

This week, dare greatly.

Recognize your own greatness – and gain the courage to live it daily. Click here for Spark – just a few spots left!

What’s YOUR Excuse?

Christi Hegstad September 17th, 2014

“He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.”

Ben Franklin

A few years ago, two friends and I were talking over dinner about how we needed to get in shape. Each of us had been sporadic with our fitness; I was probably the “best worst example” having run a marathon a few years prior followed by nothing for ages and ages.

What held us back? Well, you name it: I’m too tired, it’s too cold, I don’t have enough time, the stars aren’t aligning properly, my fortune cookie said “Relax”…

As we listened to ourselves, we made a decision: We were getting in shape. No Excuses! Over the next several months, we enlisted a number of measures for success: We created action plans, made commitments to one another, held each other accountable. We cheered each other on and had fun in the process.

But looking back, I realize that one of our most significant success factors was made over the dinner table that first night: We adopted a No-Excuses mindset.

Excuses keep us standing in the “good” when we could be leaping into the “excellent.” They cause us guilt, frustration, and self-recrimination. They keep us from boldly moving forward and truly living and working to our fullest potential.

As we approach 4th quarter, what goal do you really want to accomplish before we wrap up 2014? And what excuses hold you back? Some common ones:

I caught myself in excuse-mode again just this week. I currently have a ridiculously Bold Goal for which I am striving, and while I’ve made great progress, doubt started creeping in: “I set too big a goal. I don’t have the time. I have too much going on already. I don’t really have to reach this goal, right?”

But what’s at the heart of our excuses?

Fear.

Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of messing up, fear of the unknown.

Think for a moment, though: What if you took your most important, heartfelt goal and just said, “No excuses!”? What would it feel like to decide what’s truly important, then to make that I’ll-do-whatever-it-takes commitment to yourself?

What if, even for a brief time, you boldly moved forward with clarity and courage, and proved to yourself you can do it?

I re-instigated my No-Excuses mindset with my current goal, and I feel truer to myself and stronger as a result. The goal is important to me and difference-making to others, and I know it’s possible even if I don’t exactly know how yet.

That’s my challenge for you as we prepare to enter the final quarter of the year. Decide the goal or achievement that would mean the most to you to celebrate at year’s end, then commit to a No-Excuses mindset. Clear away the chatter, focus your energy, and just do it.

No Excuses!

For added tools and support to make it happen, join us at Spark on October 3! Share your No-Excuses ideas below, on our Facebook page, or via Twitter!

Your To-Do List: Survival or Success?

Christi Hegstad September 15th, 2014

Clarity Kickstart: September 15, 2014

Most to-do lists are actually just survival lists – getting you through your day and life, but not making each day a stepping-stone for the next so that you sequentially build a successful life. Instead of a to-do list, you need a success list – a list that is purposefully created around extraordinary results.

~ Gary Keller

Coaching Tip for the Week:

How many items are on your typical to-do list?

And how many of those tasks bring meaning and purpose to your work and life?

To-do lists are tools designed to support us, not drive us. But as expectations get higher and lists get longer, we can find ourselves constantly spinning our wheels in “survival mode” rather than the “growth mode” that helps us make our difference in the world.

At Spark, I will be teaching my streamlined system for purposeful daily action. You can start now by asking yourself two important questions:

What is my top priority goal for the year?

What am I doing today to move forward on that goal?

Keep Goethe’s wise statement in mind: Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least. Make sure you do something daily that moves you closer to your highest potential.

The “Have A Blast” Business Strategy: Dianna Ranger’s Story

Christi Hegstad September 14th, 2014

“Not only has my business steadily grown this year, I’ve grown too. I always dreamed of owning my own business. To actually be living that dream is wild.” Dianna Ranger

If you’ve been in the MAP Inc. family for a while, you might remember Dianna Ranger from an issue of Do What You Love!* two years ago. She – or more precisely, a scale with her weight clearly displayed – was highlighted, along with how her weight loss Bold Goal contributed to her career development. I received a great deal of feedback from people commenting on the courage it took for her to share that with a few thousand readers!

Di’s courage continues to grow: Last year in the ASPIRE Success Club, she set a Bold Goal to launch her professional organizing business, Location Matters. This year, as an Acceleration Mastermind member, she set a significant goal in that business with an important criterion: “I will have a blast making it happen!” Di has stepped out of her comfort zone time and time again and is experiencing tremendous business growth – and a load of joy, too.

When I recently asked Di what she’s learned this year as part of Mastermind, her response hits on a crucial – but often overlooked – aspect of goal-setting:

I’ve set goals before, but I’ve got to tell you, I’m sure glad that this year I added “have a blast making it happen” because I truly have been! Now whenever I set a goal, I include something about how I want to feel not just once it’s accomplished, but along the way.

In work and life, we are surrounded by “shoulds.” One expert tells us, “You must do XYZ if you want to succeed,” another says, “No, you must do ABC instead!” When asked what she’s learned this year that has taken her by surprise, Di – who has invested in her professional development for years and is always discovering something new about herself, her work, and how she can make her impact in the world – replied:

My biggest, and best, surprise learning has been that it’s not only o.k. to be the real me in my business (as opposed to who I think I’m supposed to be), but it’s a key ingredient for joy.

By bringing her authentic self to work each day and having a blast doing it, Di has hit huge milestones in her business: She’s attracting her ideal clients and has exponentially grown her client base, enhanced her online presence, increased exposure on her blog, and has caught the attention of others in her industry which has led to some exciting new work opportunities.

Di expected her business to grow as a result of joining the Acceleration Mastermind. What she didn’t realize was how much she would grow as a person, too.

The mutual respect, admiration and trust within our group allowed us to very quickly shed any masks and reveal our hopes, fears, and challenges. It’s like Vegas – what’s shared in the group stays within the group. I leave each meeting with new ideas and strategies, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have a positive impact in the lives of my fellow Masterminders, too. There’s something warmly fulfilling when you know you’ve made a contribution.

So how do you grow your business or career and have a blast doing it? Follow Di’s example: Be kind to yourself, and be yourself. Express gratitude frequently. Say “No” when you need to without feeling guilty, and say “Yes” when you need to, even when it’s outside your comfort zone. Stay organized, plan ahead, and work your plan. By following her own set of guiding principles, Di has discovered that she can succeed at work she loves – and make a meaningful difference in the process.

It feels amazing to make such a profound impact in people’s lives. If you want to make your difference in the world, start with yourself – invest in your own growth and development. It will compound the impact you can make in the world.
