Why I Stink At Vulnerability

Christi Hegstad November 22nd, 2015

Earlier this year, the ASPIRE Success Club discussed topics of vulnerability, authenticity, and emotional risk, fueled in part by Brene Brown’s outstanding book, Daring Greatly. I recently finished her latest, Rising Strong (also one of our ASPIRE picks for 2016) and it seems I cannot get enough of her work. What took me over a year to grab onto has now grabbed a hold on me and, to be honest, in some ways I wish it would just let go.

But in the spirit of being more open to lessons that I am resistant to learn, here I go into the arena again.

I’ve already written multiple times about Brene’s books (here and here, for example). What I haven’t yet published is the impact the books, and Brene’s work in general, have had on me personally. This is not a comfortable arena for me to step into. But I feel the nudge, and I’m continually forcing myself – er, compassionately encouraging myself 😉 – to honor those nudges.

I’ll admit it: I struggle with vulnerability. In part because I feel there’s enough doubt, uncertainty, and fear in the world without publicizing my own…but mostly because I’m scared to admit out loud that I don’t always have it all together. I’m the first to say I’m far from perfect, but please don’t ask me to describe those imperfections to you. I will likely nod and smile and say, “Yeah, not perfect, but whatever. Next topic!”

Brene hit the nail right on the head for me when she wrote: “Here’s the crux of the struggle: I want to experience your vulnerability, but I don’t want to be vulnerable.”

I am honored by, and secretly in awe of, others’ vulnerability. Yet I still put up my own protective wall.

I’ve always felt like a “what you see is what you get” kind of gal, but I received another aha moment recently while reading Friendship For Grownups by Lisa Whelchel (yes, Blair from The Facts Of Life!) when I hit upon this line: “I was adept at appearing transparent without being vulnerable. There is a difference.” Transparency, to me, is that what-you-see openness. Vulnerability, however, digs deeperAnd with that depth inherently comes more risk.

But here’s what I’m learning – slowly, surely: It is when I share my imperfections, when I invite others past this thin but sturdy wall I have built, that everyone is rewarded. The relationship expands, the mutual respect flourishes, and the opportunity for transformational growth occurs.

I’ve had so many experiences of this, I don’t know why it takes so long for the lesson to sink in.

When my Mom passed away a few years ago, my inclination for self-preservation was to retreat inward. One dear friend put aside her own discomfort of not knowing what to say in that situation (who does?) and just kept inviting me to talk. When I finally did, and after what felt like buckets of tears (hers and mine), I realized how much I wanted to share my Mom’s story, how desperately I needed to talk about her, how even though the conversation was difficult and raw and messy, it was real and honest and…beautiful. Heart-opening. I am grateful for my friend’s vulnerability in opening me up to my own.

I have been the blessed recipient of others’ vulnerability as well. A new friend sharing a parenting issue that was so very fragile and tenuous, but in her sharing she was able to come to an understanding and discern her next steps.

A writer I admire admitting that she is so nervous every single time she hits “Publish” on her blog that her stomach turns upside-down, her breathing becomes erratic, and she questions her choice of profession. Every. Single. Time.

A client opening up about her truest, deepest, most heartfelt dream, and finding herself in tears because she’s never said it out loud in the 28 years she’s dreamed it.

Vulnerability lessons surround us, move us, inspire us. They connect us with others on a deep and profound level, making this life more rich than we ever knew possible.

And still, I struggle.

But I’m trying.

I learn from vulnerability role models (Glennon Melton and Elizabeth Lesser are two great author examples), and I keep asking for help in this area. Like Brene writes, “We simply can’t learn to be more vulnerable and courageous on our own. Sometimes our first and greatest dare is asking for support.”

And here’s my hope: I hope that by opening up my door into this arena, yours opens as well.

I hope that by acknowledging and being o.k. with my imperfections, my children know that they can be o.k. with their mistakes and compassionate with themselves.

And I hope that everyone, everyone, knows that they matter. That they have a story worth telling. And – so important – that they are not alone.

I kind of stink at math. I kind of stink at keeping my floors clean, at voicing strong political beliefs, at most sports involving a ball. And I kind of stink at vulnerability.

Of all of those, the only one that really matters much to me is the vulnerability one. You’ll hopefully see more shining through my writing (and if you attended Spark, you saw it there, too), all in the spirit of growing together. Here’s to our continued flourishing with an open heart, a kind and positive mindset, and embracing all – including the honest and raw and messy and beautiful – that makes life so rich. 🙂

Going Farther Than You Think You Can

Christi Hegstad November 16th, 2015

“Always remember you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
Winnie the Pooh

Coaching Tip for the Week:

On Friday, nearly 100 women came together at Spark to dream big, set Bold Goals, and create an action plan to make the next year the best one yet. What a day!

Toward the end of our event, we did an exercise that proved – both physically and mentally – Pooh’s wise words. These women stretched beyond their limits and demonstrated their ability to move past what they previously thought possible. It was breathtaking!

This week, stretch your limits. Do something you previously didn’t think you could. Speak up in a meeting when you’re normally silent. Say “thank you” to someone in uniform when normally you would only think it. Do five extra sit-ups, set one goal higher, apply for the promotion, take the lead.

Nothing is going to change unless we – you and I – take the initiative and change it. That’s going to require us to stretch in new, bold, sometimes uncomfortable ways.

But what might be waiting for you just beyond your comfort zone?

Stretch yourself and find out.

What if your boldest dream is actually within reach…and you don’t even realize it?

A New Way To Ask For Help

Christi Hegstad November 9th, 2015

“Sometimes, reaching out and taking someone’s hand is the beginning of a journey. At other times, it is allowing another to take yours.”
Vera Nazarian

Coaching Tip for the Week:

So…how are you at asking for help?

I met with a coaching client last week who admitted the lengths she had to go to initially reach out to me. “I thought I should be able to figure things out on my own,” she expressed. “I felt like reaching out for help was failure, but I see now that it’s actually the opposite.”

It feels amazing to help others, doesn’t it?

So why do we struggle so much to ask for help ourselves?

Reaching out for help – confidently, unashamedly – is one of the greatest qualities you can model for others. We are built for community, and no one gets through this ride called life alone. The sooner we embrace that, the better off we all are.

This week, reach out for help. If this does not come naturally, try this:

Think about a time when someone came to you for help, when they entrusted you with their challenge and you were able to help them get from where they were to where they wanted to be.

How did that feel for you? Did you feel honored? Strong? Purposeful?

Now, give someone else the opportunity to feel that way. Choose someone you can trust, remind yourself that seeking help is a sign of strength, and go.

Nine times out of ten, the only question you’ll ask yourself is, “Why didn’t I reach out sooner?!”

Feel The Fear…And Lead Anyway

Christi Hegstad November 4th, 2015

**This article was originally published by the Des Moines Business Record.**

At my high school graduation, I did something a bit unexpected. One of a handful of student speakers, I walked up to the podium, took a deep breath, and proceeded to sing a peppy little song I had written for my class. I am not a singer (not for lack of trying!) and who knows what possessed me to stand in the arena in Duluth, Minnesota and sing to my class. But I did.

Afterwards, people commented on my courage. (Alas, no one mentioned my singing prowess, but I digress.) “How on earth could you stand up there and sing your graduation speech?” they asked. “That took guts!”

But here’s the thing: Sometimes I think I’m the biggest chicken to ever walk the face of the earth.

I can stare at an email endlessly, stomach flipping the entire time, as I contemplate whether or not to click “send.” I can create public speaking scenarios far worse than simply tripping onstage. You think political debates seem endless? You should hear the ones I have in my head sometimes!

I remember being told we must be fearless if we are to live to our full potential. I heard it. I admired as I perceived it in others. Yet I’d still feel my cheeks heating up and my heart racing when I encountered a new or uncertain situation.

Then, like a gift, I read Dr. Susan Jeffers’ classic, Feel The Fear And Do It Anyway. I learned that everyone feels fear, and that we don’t need to fight or ignore our fear but rather learn to move forward with it. Just as the title suggests, we need to know how to acknowledge our fear and still take action.

This book prompted a turning point for me, and became one of the first books I had the ASPIRE Success Club read, too. Years later, we still bring up concepts we learned from this powerful resource. A few takeaways:

Christi Hegstad MAP Inc HeadshotCOACH CHRISTI’S CHALLENGE:

Leadership can incite all kinds of fear – so much so that many shy away from a leadership role altogether. Whether you fear uncertainty, rejection, messing up, or the 80,000 other potential concerns that appear in any given situation, try this:

Check in with your values. Decide what’s best for the greater good. If you’re singing your high school graduation speech, perhaps consider voice coaching.

Then, feel the fear…and do it anyway.

What helps you move forward even in the midst of fear? Share your ideas below.

What Do You Need To Say “Yes” To?

Christi Hegstad November 2nd, 2015

“Saying Yes begins things. Saying Yes is how things grow. Saying Yes leads to knowledge. So for as long as you have the strength to, say Yes.”

Stephen Colbert

Coaching Tip for the Week:

Many of us need to learn how to say “No.” We’re overextended, overscheduled, and overwhelmed, all because we have a hard time saying No. This is often a big coaching focus when I begin working with new clients, who find themselves burned out and stretched to the max.

Saying No is important.

What I have found, however, is that it’s easier to say No when we know our deeper Yes. What is truly worth saying Yes to?

Some top contenders: experiences for growth or to learn something new, opportunities to strengthen a meaningful relationship, activities that honor your values and help fulfill your purpose, actions that bring healthy delight.

This week, say a meaningful Yes. What do you consider important but have been putting off? What opportunity is coming up that could enhance your growth? What value or priority have you put on the back-burner that needs your hearty Yes?

Remember, when you say Yes to something, you’re automatically saying No to something else. Discern your top values and priorities and say Yes to the things that matter most!

Share your thoughts with us on Facebook and Twitter!

Announcement: Spark has sold out!

However, we met with the facility last week and were able to expand the space, which means we have room for 15 more people to join us. To say “Yes” to Sparkclick here!

Don’t Go Through Life – GROW Through Life: Interview with Dr. Christina Hibbert

Christi Hegstad October 27th, 2015

Perspective.

That is the word that continually came to mind during my recent interview with Dr. Christina Hibbert, a clinical psychologist and expert on the issues of grief, loss, mental health, and self-esteem. Over the past eight years, life has thrown many curve balls Dr. Hibbert’s – who also goes by Christi – way, beginning with the death of her sister and brother-in-law and her subsequent adoption of their two sons. All of this occurred just weeks before Christi’s fourth biological child was born, growing her family from 5 to 8 practically overnight.

Several losses, unexpected challenges, family legal issues, and more have occurred since that time, yet Christi’s perspective remains on the side of growth. “I thought life was being thrown way off-course,” she says of those early days, “but all of this actually turned me onto a greater course.” Christi exemplifies her motto in every way: Don’t just go through life, grow through life. Her perspective has inspired countless others through her books, blogs, radio show, and public speaking.

We covered a lot of ground in our recent interview with the ASPIRE Success Club, everything from perfectionism to self-care to random acts of kindness. I caught myself not only taking all kinds of notes, but drawing little hearts and stars next to many of Christi’s comments as they resonated so deeply. 🙂 She clearly believes there is meaning and purpose to be found in everything we experience, we just need to be open to the lessons.

“I’ve learned to let go of control,” Christi writes in This Is How We Grow, “or rather, I’ve learned I never really had control in the first place.” I had to ask about this, since letting go – whether of control, perfectionism, or the way things “should” be – can be so challenging. “There’s a beauty in being able to let go,” Christi shares. “It’s like being able to exhale.” Not always easy, but always worthwhile.

She also gently, but firmly, encourages all of us to honor our self-worth and help those around us do the same. “Instead of asking, ‘What’s the best thing I can do right now?'” Christi offers, “try asking, ‘What’s the most loving thing I can do right now?'” And when it comes to sharing kindness with others, never delay. “If you have that prompting, DO IT. It might be exactly what that person needs.”

It all circles back to perspective, something Christi seems to have in spades. With her lifelong love of learning and passion for growth, she continually looks for the lessons to be learned – even in the hard stuff. She also models this for her family and those she connects with through her work. All of which helps her – and those in her world – to live her motto:

Don’t just go through life. Grow through life!

Time To Play With The Big Kids

Christi Hegstad October 26th, 2015

When you read this line from Edwene Gaines, do you believe it? I mean deep down, to the bones, believe it?

Are you truly here to play at the same level as these positivity legends?

I can tell you the answer: YES.

No doubt about it.

Too many of us are playing small. We fear we’re not {insert word of choice here} enough to change the world.

I truly believe part of my purpose is to change that. It’s one of the reasons I started Spark (where you’ll see several examples of individuals changing the world), and it fuels all my work. You are here to play big. You are here to make a positive difference.

This week, play bigTake a bold leap in the direction of your dreams. Decide to take a leadership role in an organization you believe in. Make an investment that will positively impact your growth. Attend that event that will connect you with people you admire.

Playing small, or feeling “less than,” serves no one. Come out of hiding and play, confidently, with the big kids!

Do It Anyway

Christi Hegstad October 21st, 2015

I love the THINK acronym floating around social media these days. Have you seen it? It basically encourages you to pause and ask if what you’re about to say or post is:

True?

Helpful?

Inspiring?

Necessary?

Kind?

In a nutshell, is what you’re about to share positive?

Seems easy enough, right? But maintaining positivity in a negative environment doesn’t always come without challenge. One of my clients, an inspiring leader who pursued coaching on the verge of burnout, has begun focusing time and energy on improving his work environment. He’s just getting started and doesn’t expect an overnight transformation, but recently he asked:

“What if I do all of this and it doesn’t work?”

My suggestion: Do it anyway.

Perhaps not the most eloquent response 🙂 and there’s a bit more to it – making sure you honor your values, time, and those around you, for example. But really, how can we go wrong putting positivity out into the world?

You may not see an immediate change. But if your efforts come from the highest place in your heart with the intention to serve, do it anyway – and let the Ripple Effect take over from there.

Take my Clarity Kickstarts, for example. For the last 7+ years, I have sent my weekly positive emails to thousands of people. I create them with the intention of changing the world for the better – however, unless you tell me, I usually don’t know who takes the time to read them or what they spark for you. But I do it anyway.

And sometimes I get an email like this recent one from Carolyn R.:

I receive your Clarity Kickstarts, and your latest one dealt with enhancing your focus. I was interviewing for a new job the next day that I felt would be a perfect fit for my skills. I had been studying everything I could find on the organization for more than a week. (I knew there was stiff competition for the position.) Reading your Clarity Kickstart helped me stay focused (and calmer) during those final hours of preparation leading up to the interview.
I am elated to report that I was offered the job! Thank you for the part that your Clarity Kickstart played in the process.

Same thing with my new Purpose Pointer video clips: I create them with an intention of service, hoping to fill a need, then post them and let them go. Last week, Sarah A. sent a message regarding the “Life List” Purpose Pointer:

I’m having a lot of fun and can’t stop thinking about my Life List and adding to it. Thank you! And also thank you for saying to include 101 (or more) items because I’m now at 62!

(She even included a photo of her daughter working on her Life List! Love it!)

The Ripple Effect never fails. Many times it’s years before we learn of an impact (my educator clients and friends will attest to this!) – and I’m actually willing to bet that most of the time we don’t hear the outcomes of our positivity effort at all.

In the meantime, we must continue doing it anyway.

My challenge for you this month is two-fold:

First, send a note to someone who has positively impacted your life. What will take you 5 minutes to write will make their entire day, week, or month – trust me!

Second, be a positivity leader. Whether in what you say, do, post, write, or any other format – don’t let the naysayers, the fear, or the potential silence hold you back.

Do it anyway.

When it comes to putting kindness, respect, love, hope, or any other form of positivity into the world –

even if you serve with heart and get a scowl in return,

or you notice others doing not-so-kind things,

or you never hear a ‘thank you’ –

do it anyway.

Positivity matters in work, leadership, and life.

Kindness matters and is a sign of true strength.

YOU matter – and are here to make a difference in the world. Make it a positive one.

It’s not always easy. At times it may feel like a lot of work.

But please, please…do it anyway.

How do you put your positivity into the world? Share your thoughts below, on Facebook, or via Twitter

If you thrive on negativity, do NOT come to Spark! But if you’re ready for an infusion of positivity, growth, and connection, we have just a handful of spots open.

Burned Out, Or Fired Up?

Christi Hegstad October 19th, 2015

“Burnout results not from hard work – we’re capable of working very hard – but from a sense of futility, the fear that all the hard work isn’t making a difference.”

Harold Kushner

Coaching Tip for the Week:

A huge difference exists between feeling exhausted at the end of the day by work that drains you and feeling “spent” by work that fuels your passion and purpose.

Where would you place yourself?

Many of my clients seek coaching because they are on the verge of burnout. “I used to love the work,” I hear, “but now I’m just worn out by it.”

If this resonates, this week commit to an action to move from burned out into fired up! A few ideas:

Connect with what you initially enjoyed about the work. Was it interacting with people? Seeing projects through to completion? Leading activities? Identify what you’ve lost touch with so you can determine how to invite it back in.

Connect with your ‘why’ – your purpose. Why does your work matter? How are you impacting others? I guarantee you are; spend some time discerning how – and perhaps how you can connect with that even more deeply.

Connect with your time. Get a handle on your schedule, priorities, and what matters most, so you can run your day instead of your day running you. If you’re coming to Spark in a few weeks, you’ll gain a fantastic system for making this happen every single day.

In a word, connect. With your passion, your purpose, your time – and others. Work and life are a lot more fun when you’re fired up rather than burned out!

How Fun Is Your Workplace?

Christi Hegstad October 12th, 2015

“How can I inject surprise, fun, and outrageousness into this day?”

Pam Grout

Coaching Tip for the Week:

How fun is it to go to work each morning?

If your answer hovers somewhere in the “not very/not at all” range, it’s time to change that.

Consider this: You will likely spend a minimum of 2,000 hours at work this year. That’s if you work 40 hours a week with two weeks of vacation. 2,000 hours!

This week, brainstorm what a fun, magnetic environment would be like. Engage all of your senses. What would you see? Hear? What physical representations would highlight the walls?

What if you added some inspiring artwork in the hall? Or if you started each staff meeting with a win? Several coaching clients have told me they print this Clarity Kickstart every week and put it on the bulletin board. Even scent is powerful – one of my children has a friend whose house smells like “cinnamon and happiness.” 🙂

So much research exists to support the importance of a positive, engaging workplace. But even if you’re not a research junkie, common sense probably tells you that people will perform better, be happier, and produce more if they experience meaning, purpose, and joy at work.

That includes you!

Don’t wait for someone to do something. Inject some fun into today!
