When Told You’re ‘Too Much’

Christi Hegstad August 21st, 2025

After wrapping up some coaching work recently, I was journaling about this strange dichotomy so many of us experience:

We’re often told we’re too much – too loud and too bold, or too quiet and too reserved, or too _______ (fill in the blank with whatever version you’ve heard).

Yet we’re also told we’re not enough – not successful enough, not experienced enough, not talented or connected or well-spoken enough.

With so many different voices coming at us with so many different messages, what’s a person to do?

In my latest Reading And Purpose article, I share a few practical, purposeful ways to begin answering that question. Spoiler alert: It involves turning down the external noise and cranking up the volume on your inner voice instead.

Goals Gone Bad (And A Few Remedies, Too!)

Christi Hegstad August 13th, 2025

A few days ago, I reached into the refrigerator to grab the last remaining bit of spinach. According to the packaging, it had not yet reached its expiration date, but when I opened it up, the texture and – shall we use the word scent here – told a different story.

The end date hadn’t yet arrived, but the spinach was done.

Any chance some of your 2025 goals feel similarly?

If so, a) you’re not alone, and b) I’ve got some remedies for you. You’ll find them, as well as personal examples and book recommendations, in my Reading And Purpose newsletter. Subscribe and read here!

Becoming A Purposeful Reader

Christi Hegstad August 6th, 2025

Why do you read? When you open a book, what do you hope to gain?

As with most things, knowing your ‘why’ can help you make the most of the experience – and in the case of reading, it can also help you choose your books accordingly.

Today I’m sharing five ideas for becoming a more purposeful reader, from immersive strategies to connecting with others to some of my own personal bookish preferences. And for those asking why bother putting so much thought and effort into reading – can’t we just read for fun? (spoiler alert: yes!) – I’ve got some food for thought for you, too.

Making Work Meaningful

Christi Hegstad July 17th, 2025

** New Aug/Sept openings available in purpose coaching – learn more and enroll here! **

Twenty-two years ago, when I first started my business to help people engage in meaningful work and purposeful lives, I spent a lot of time educating organizations on the business case for supporting employees in finding meaning and purpose in what they do.

‘That sounds nice,’ I’d hear frequently, ‘but we’ve got more pressing issues.’

Nowadays, thanks to increasing research, numerous workplace studies, companies reeling from the costs of the ‘great resignation’ and ‘quiet quitting,’ and a generation of employees asking about meaning and purpose at work before they even sign on, smart businesses are already well aware of how creating an environment of meaning and purpose benefits them in countless ways. I’m still happy to educate, but I’m even happier that meaningful work has become part of the everyday ‘let’s take action’ conversation rather than the ‘wouldn’t that be nice’ one.

Whether you are the CEO of your organization creating a culture of meaning and purpose, a leader striving to help your team members know the meaning behind their work, or an individual wanting to make your own work feel meaningful, I’ve got some practical starting points for you in my latest Reading And Purpose newsletter – subscribe and read here!

The Ultimate Morning Routine

Christi Hegstad July 2nd, 2025

How do you start your day off right?

A quick internet search of morning routines yields many … shall we say, interesting … results. I look at some of the ‘must do’ items and think I would be miserable if I started my day with them! The thing about morning routines – and about so much in life, really – is that a one-size-fits-all approach rarely exists. Your ultimate morning routine is the one that works for you, and that sets your day up in the way that best supports your purpose.

So instead of telling you the three or seven or twelve things you must incorporate into your morning routine, I am instead offering a number of ideas with which you can experiment to see what serves you best. A mix and match approach, if you will.
