What’s Your Why?

If someone asked you to state your 'why' in a sentence or two, what would you say?

“Meaning requires knowledge of our life’s *why*. But we spend almost all of our energy on the *what* and *how* instead.” – Arthur C. Brooks

Clarity Kickstart:

What’s your why?

If this question feels too large, nebulous, and ‘out there’ to answer, I get it. Clarifying our purpose can easily fall into the ‘someday, when I have more time’ category of life’s activities and responsibilities.

But what if it’s easier to clarify than you thought?

And what if, by understanding your why, the whats and hows of life became easier and more clear as well?

For years (decades, at this point), I have helped people uncover and write their purpose statements, often in a day. It doesn’t have to be nearly as difficult as you might think, and once clarified, it can truly transform all aspects of your work, leadership, and life.

This week, open to a new journal page or a fresh note on your phone and label it ‘Meaning And Purpose.’ Throughout the week, whenever you feel fulfilled, ‘in the zone,’ or as your best self, jot it down – along with why.

Maybe you feel a sense of deep satisfaction after helping a coworker or friend solve a problem they had struggled with all week.

Perhaps during a presentation you’ve been preparing for months, you feel completely energized as you answer questions and facilitate rich discussion on the findings you’ve shared.

You could notice such moments while at the dinner table with your family, in the checkout line at the grocery store, in a strategic planning meeting with your board, or while helping a stranger figure out the parking meter.

Make note of these moments, and make note of the why. Over time, patterns will likely begin to emerge, offering clues into your purpose.

With curiosity and awareness, you can begin to answer ‘What’s your why?’ sooner than you think!
