Working With Purpose

Christi Hegstad February 8th, 2016

“Those who have a ‘why’ can bear almost any ‘how’.”

Viktor Frankl

Coaching Tip for the Week:

One thing that breaks my heart, and a huge motivator for starting my business, is the sense of purposelessness so many people express about their work. “I spend 60 hours a week at my job,” they say, “but why? What’s the point?”

A Holocaust survivor, Frankl endured circumstances most of us can’t fathom, crediting his survival in large part to his focus on purpose. He reminded himself and others, frequently and persistently, what they had to live for, focusing on that instead of the despair of their situation.

Purpose changes everything

This week, focus on your purposeRather than becoming overwhelmed by your to-do list, connect each action to the bigger picture.

A client recently discovered that when he viewed his data entry work as a menial, tedious task, it drained him of energy. When we looked at it through the lens of purpose, however, he realized that – in the grand scheme of things – his accurate data entry ultimately helped save lives.

I wish I snapped a picture of his expression once that knowing settled in! 🙂

Your work matters. Whether paid handsomely or done for free, your actions are an opportunity to make a difference in the world every single day. Accept that honor with heart. This week, work with purpose!

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: The Spark Effect Project

Christi Hegstad February 4th, 2016

We’ve all encountered them: maybe it’s your barista or your boss, the hotel concierge or the hospice nurse, a custodian or a campsite owner, your grocery clerk or your general practitioner.

That person who, whenever you encounter them and for no matter how brief a time, leaves you feeling better than when you came – simply because of their attitude, kindness, or that special “spark” they bring to their work.

Who comes to mind?

I want to talk with them!

Not only do I want to show these wonderful souls off to the world, I also want to learn what makes them tick. How do they stay positive, especially in difficult situations? Are they engaged in their dream jobs, or simply making the best of a current situation? Do they know what a difference their work makes – to you and others?

I will highlight many of these special “sparks of light” on my blog, in social media, in my upcoming book, and various other places.

Please email us with your nomination for The Spark Effect Project! Send us their name, where they work (include city and state), any contact information you can provide (even if it’s just the phone number of their place of business), and a couple sentences about why you’ve nominated them. If we highlight the “spark” you nominate, we’ll include your name in the book and post as well.

Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals have far-reaching effects. ~ Dalai Lama

Let’s shine a light on those people that spark ripples of positivity! Thank you for helping set the Spark Effect in motion!

Email your nomination to assistant(at)meaning-and-purpose.com today!

Writing Your Letter To Self

Christi Hegstad January 17th, 2016

The other evening, after a somewhat exhausting day, I sat down by the fireplace and decided to peek at Facebook for a few minutes before calling it a night. As I glanced through updates from friends and family, a message popped onto my screen:

Christi – I couldn’t wait to even find my work email where I’ve got your email address stored to message you. Just got my note I wrote a year ago to myself and that may be the most powerful piece of mail I’ve ever received. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

A bit of context:

Early last year, I asked our ASPIRE Success Club members to write a letter to themselves. “I’m only going to give you three minutes,” I explained, “so no overthinking. I just want you to quickly write a few lines to yourself that will bring a smile to your face if you were to open it at the end of the year – something that acknowledges your beautiful self and that celebrates the amazing year you’re about to have.” I then had them each self-address an envelope, place her letter inside, seal it up, and leave it with me. Nothing more was said.

Towards the end of December, we mailed all the letters out. On or near New Year’s Eve day, each ASPIRE member had that moment of confusion when first seeing something in her own handwriting waiting in the mailbox, 🙂 followed by the joyful experience of reading the encouraging letter she had written so many months before.

I have done this exercise with groups many times and the results are always astounding; this time was no exception. I received numerous emails and calls explaining how meaningful and deeply profound that experience of writing by hand, then forgetting about, then reading this compassionate, celebratory Letter To Self is. I save – and savor – each of these messages.

One in particular, however, impacted me deeply this year. I’ve known Lacey Schmidt for about twelve years. She attended a class I taught through community education when first starting my business and has been an inspiring client, colleague, and friend ever since.

This past year has been a bit tumultuous for Lacey, to say the least: When she wrote that letter to herself in ASPIRE, she was in the midst of a difficult divorce, had two boys under the age of three, and was about to be offered an opportunity to move halfway across the country for a promotion she had earned. The Letter To Self exercise came at a time when Lacey’s life felt somewhat uncertain and chaotic – but she also knew that uncertainty and chaos weren’t her “essence.” She reached deep within for this assignment, writing:

Hey You,

Whoa. What a year. Could more have fit into this incredible journey year to more strength, wisdom, courage, and love? You’ve experienced it all – and came out shining. You want to be YOU and that was the most important focus you had a year ago when you didn’t want to be…well, anywhere. You came out focused, fighting, and with superhero posture. You’ve done all that seemed impossible with grace, charisma, and inspiration. You’ve helped others. You are growing your boys into incredible young men. You’ve not lost sight of yourself or given up or compromised your values, priorities, or essentially what matters most. You have transformed

I am so proud of you and excited for all the next year will bring. What will you do now? Who will you continue to grow and become?

Love,

Me

Wow. Powerful words, wouldn’t you say? Especially coming at a time of such difficulty and uncertainty.

So, when I received Lacey’s private message on Facebook, I immediately responded, thanking her for letting me know what a meaningful experience the Letter To Self exercise was for her. She wrote back:

It was such a hard, hard year. Yet, what I set out here [in this letter] and was really focused on all year (even if I forgot the exact words) came true.

Therein lies the power of the Letter To Self exercise, and I encourage anyone reading this article to do it. Close your eyes for a moment and place yourself at the end of the year. Consider what you want to be feeling at that time, who you want to be and how you want to show up in the world. Then, from that expansive place, write a letter to yourself – short, positive, and in your own handwriting. Seal it up and either give it to a trusted friend to mail to you at the end of December or put it somewhere (maybe with your Christmas decorations) where you won’t see it again until year-end. Then, forget it.

You will be amazed at what this experience creates for you. Absolutely amazed. We did this in ASPIRE again this year, and it will likely become an annual part of our curriculum.

Take three minutes and do this, right now. You won’t regret it.

I’ll close this article with Lacey’s final comment before we signed off of Facebook for the night. What she wrote next brought goosebumps to my arms and tears to my eyes:

As I said to some friends, if you want to bring yourself to your knees, write a letter to yourself, forget about it, and have it sent to you a year later. And realize all of what you wrote and forgot about came true.

Most days, it doesn’t feel like any of this is true. When I read it though, I know it’s the exact truth. So perfect. And much needed. I can’t thank you enough.

Thank YOU, Lacey, for knowing your exact truth, for sharing your experience, and for allowing me to share it with others.

5 Lessons Learned In 2015

Christi Hegstad December 15th, 2015

What lessons did you learn or reaffirm this year?

I ask myself this question every year as part of my annual review. Although I frequently share lessons learned on my blog (today marks blog #358, in fact), it’s helpful and enlightening to pull everything together at year-end. Below are five lessons that stand out for me this year, plus the link to an article that expands on each. I share these with the hope that one or all of them serve you, too!

1. Keep It Simple.
My theme this year has been “Simplify & Elevate,” which has played out in everything from a massive office decluttering to more focused services to sharing simple but high-quality tools and resources like the Purpose Planner. Don’t overthink or make things more complex than necessary. Simpler usually equals better! For more on annual themes, click here.

2. Be Authentically Confident.
Dr. Daniel Amen writes about the 18/40/60 Rule: At age 18, you worry constantly about what others think of you; at age 40, you don’t really care what they think of you; and at age 60, you realize no one’s really been thinking about you all that much anyway! Believing in yourself and feeling confident in your authenticity can transform everything – your relationships, your success at work, your willingness to step out of your comfort zone. For an example of this (starring my big hair!), click here.

3. Embrace Vulnerability.
Hmmm….where to start with this one? We discussed the topic of vulnerability in depth in ASPIRE this year and the consensus was this: it’s difficult, it’s scary, but the results (inner strength, better relationships, emotional freedom) are so worth it. I am most definitely a work in progress when it comes to vulnerability, but the more I delve in, the more I am rewarded. To find out why this is a difficult lesson for me, click here.

4. Take A Break.
When you do what you love, “turning it off” can prove challenging. I often refer to this as the dark side of doing what you love – and I am only half-joking; it can easily lead to workaholism if not kept in check. Regularly taking an afternoon, day, or week off can restore your energy, enhance your creativity, reboot your passion, and keep you healthy. Be intentional about this by blocking time off on your ’16 calendar now. To learn about my experiment with this a few months ago, click here.

5. Be The Good.
Our world has a lot of issues, no doubt about it. But every day, I see examples of extraordinary kindness, generosity, help, and support. (I will be highlighting these in 2016 with a cool new project – stay tuned!) I choose to focus on these, as well as what I can do to make a difference every day. If you want things to be different, take action. Be part of the solution. Like Gandhi expressed, it starts with each one of us being the change we wish to see in the world. For more on kindness, positivity, and being the change, click here.

Like I shared in this week’s Clarity Kickstart, one of the best things you can do for yourself – personally and professionally – is surround yourself with inspiring people who will encourage, challenge, support, and push you. In addition to family and friends, I give thanks this holiday season to my coaches, mastermind partners, clients, and all of YOU! I appreciate your feedback greatly, as well as the many ways you are changing the world with your purposeful intention, positive action, and strong leadership.

Cheers and gratitude to you this holiday season!

Creating A Flourishing, Values-Based Organization

Christi Hegstad December 2nd, 2015

This article was originally published by the Des Moines Business Record.

Most people who engage in coaching do so with a desire to improve themselves. Passionate leaders, however, typically strive to enhance their teams, departments, and organizations as well. Wanting to create an engaging and flourishing culture, strong leaders know that they set the tone and are always on the lookout for ways to do that effectively.

As you surely know, success leaves clues and we can learn a lot from the experience of those we admire.

In that vein, when it comes to coaching around organizational culture, I often find myself referring to the book that captures Zappos’ experience so well: Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh. It’s a terrific case study of an organization that strives to wow its customers with service, empower employees to make decisions and lead with confidence, and create a fun, engaging, even weird place to work.

How does Zappos do it?

It starts with one foundational piece upon which everything else is built: core values.

“Your personal core values define who you are, and a company’s core values define the company’s character and brand,” explains Hsieh, who goes on to share Zappos’ 10 core values:

  1. Deliver WOW through service.
  2. Embrace and drive change.
  3. Create fun and a little weirdness.
  4. Be adventurous, creative, and open-minded.
  5. Pursue growth and learning.
  6. Build open and honest relationships with communication.
  7. Build a positive team and family spirit.
  8. Do more with less.
  9. Be passionate and determined.
  10. Be humble.

Defining your organizational core values can prove the guidepost for decisions, actions, and commitments. Once clarified, you can turn to your values when interviewing new hires, planning development goals, conducting staff meetings, and more. They become the touchstone of your entire organization.

The fear, and unfortunately, often the reality is that values become simply another item to put on the website or employee manual and then forget. You must work the values into your day-to-day operations for them to have any bearing, and Zappos does a terrific job of this.

In probably its most notable example, after their first weeks of training, all new hires are offered $2,000 to quit. Why? “We want employees that believe in our long-term vision and want to be a part of our culture,” says Hsieh. Fewer than 1 percent take the offer, and Zappos also boasts a retention rate not many can match. To take a phrase from author and researcher Jim Collins, Zappos takes extra measures to “get the right people on the bus,” and it works.

The “fun and weirdness” value is expressed in a variety of ways, from themed costume days to hot dog socials to on-campus petting zoos. And I love some of their strategies for value No. 7, such as “The Face Game”: In addition to a login and password to get into their computer, the photo of a randomly selected employee will also appear on their screen, and they must identify the person’s name. Once they do, a profile and bio of that employee appears to share a bit more insight.

“In the end, it turns out we’re all taking different paths in pursuit of the same goal: happiness,” writes Hsieh. Creating a positive culture will benefit everyone involved as well as the bottom line, and it all begins with clear values upon which everything else is built.

Christi Hegstad MAP Inc HeadshotCOACH CHRISTI’S CHALLENGE:

What are your organization’s core values? How do employees fulfill them on a day-to-day basis?

If you can’t easily answer these questions, take some time this month to read Delivering Happiness.

Then, take the initiative to reevaluate your organization’s (as well as your own) values. Seek the necessary support to define clear, agreed-upon values that truly fuel your business. You can then design the path to ensure those values are honored and celebrated on a daily basis – and you, your employees, and your customers will reap the benefits!

Be Kinder Than Necessary

Christi Hegstad November 23rd, 2015

“If every single person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary – the world really would be a better place.”
R. J. Palacio

Coaching Tip for the Week:

What would happen if, at every opportunity, we were kinder than necessary?

What if we held the door for the next person – or held our tongue when we felt like griping?

What if we said thank you for the little things, as if they were big things?

What if we smiled at the stranger, even though we were tired and cranky?

What if we offered a hand, expecting nothing in return?

What if we counted our blessings for all that we have, instead of longing for what we don’t?

What if we were kinder than necessary?

This week, as we celebrate Thanksgiving here in the U.S., be kinder than necessary. All the time, all week long.

What if we all did this?

Don’t Go Through Life – GROW Through Life: Interview with Dr. Christina Hibbert

Christi Hegstad October 27th, 2015

Perspective.

That is the word that continually came to mind during my recent interview with Dr. Christina Hibbert, a clinical psychologist and expert on the issues of grief, loss, mental health, and self-esteem. Over the past eight years, life has thrown many curve balls Dr. Hibbert’s – who also goes by Christi – way, beginning with the death of her sister and brother-in-law and her subsequent adoption of their two sons. All of this occurred just weeks before Christi’s fourth biological child was born, growing her family from 5 to 8 practically overnight.

Several losses, unexpected challenges, family legal issues, and more have occurred since that time, yet Christi’s perspective remains on the side of growth. “I thought life was being thrown way off-course,” she says of those early days, “but all of this actually turned me onto a greater course.” Christi exemplifies her motto in every way: Don’t just go through life, grow through life. Her perspective has inspired countless others through her books, blogs, radio show, and public speaking.

We covered a lot of ground in our recent interview with the ASPIRE Success Club, everything from perfectionism to self-care to random acts of kindness. I caught myself not only taking all kinds of notes, but drawing little hearts and stars next to many of Christi’s comments as they resonated so deeply. 🙂 She clearly believes there is meaning and purpose to be found in everything we experience, we just need to be open to the lessons.

“I’ve learned to let go of control,” Christi writes in This Is How We Grow, “or rather, I’ve learned I never really had control in the first place.” I had to ask about this, since letting go – whether of control, perfectionism, or the way things “should” be – can be so challenging. “There’s a beauty in being able to let go,” Christi shares. “It’s like being able to exhale.” Not always easy, but always worthwhile.

She also gently, but firmly, encourages all of us to honor our self-worth and help those around us do the same. “Instead of asking, ‘What’s the best thing I can do right now?'” Christi offers, “try asking, ‘What’s the most loving thing I can do right now?'” And when it comes to sharing kindness with others, never delay. “If you have that prompting, DO IT. It might be exactly what that person needs.”

It all circles back to perspective, something Christi seems to have in spades. With her lifelong love of learning and passion for growth, she continually looks for the lessons to be learned – even in the hard stuff. She also models this for her family and those she connects with through her work. All of which helps her – and those in her world – to live her motto:

Don’t just go through life. Grow through life!

Burned Out, Or Fired Up?

Christi Hegstad October 19th, 2015

“Burnout results not from hard work – we’re capable of working very hard – but from a sense of futility, the fear that all the hard work isn’t making a difference.”

Harold Kushner

Coaching Tip for the Week:

A huge difference exists between feeling exhausted at the end of the day by work that drains you and feeling “spent” by work that fuels your passion and purpose.

Where would you place yourself?

Many of my clients seek coaching because they are on the verge of burnout. “I used to love the work,” I hear, “but now I’m just worn out by it.”

If this resonates, this week commit to an action to move from burned out into fired up! A few ideas:

Connect with what you initially enjoyed about the work. Was it interacting with people? Seeing projects through to completion? Leading activities? Identify what you’ve lost touch with so you can determine how to invite it back in.

Connect with your ‘why’ – your purpose. Why does your work matter? How are you impacting others? I guarantee you are; spend some time discerning how – and perhaps how you can connect with that even more deeply.

Connect with your time. Get a handle on your schedule, priorities, and what matters most, so you can run your day instead of your day running you. If you’re coming to Spark in a few weeks, you’ll gain a fantastic system for making this happen every single day.

In a word, connect. With your passion, your purpose, your time – and others. Work and life are a lot more fun when you’re fired up rather than burned out!

How Fun Is Your Workplace?

Christi Hegstad October 12th, 2015

“How can I inject surprise, fun, and outrageousness into this day?”

Pam Grout

Coaching Tip for the Week:

How fun is it to go to work each morning?

If your answer hovers somewhere in the “not very/not at all” range, it’s time to change that.

Consider this: You will likely spend a minimum of 2,000 hours at work this year. That’s if you work 40 hours a week with two weeks of vacation. 2,000 hours!

This week, brainstorm what a fun, magnetic environment would be like. Engage all of your senses. What would you see? Hear? What physical representations would highlight the walls?

What if you added some inspiring artwork in the hall? Or if you started each staff meeting with a win? Several coaching clients have told me they print this Clarity Kickstart every week and put it on the bulletin board. Even scent is powerful – one of my children has a friend whose house smells like “cinnamon and happiness.” 🙂

So much research exists to support the importance of a positive, engaging workplace. But even if you’re not a research junkie, common sense probably tells you that people will perform better, be happier, and produce more if they experience meaning, purpose, and joy at work.

That includes you!

Don’t wait for someone to do something. Inject some fun into today!

Are You A Model Or A Critic?

Christi Hegstad October 5th, 2015

“Be a light, not a judge. Be a model, not a critic.”

Stephen Covey

Coaching Tip for the Week:

Do you find it easier to tell someone else how to change than to change yourself?

Or catch yourself pondering ways to convince others “see the light” once you’ve discovered it?

Or simply wonder how you – one person – can make a difference, especially when an issue seems overwhelming?

Whenever I am in one of these places, I remember Gandhi’s profound suggestion to be the change we wish to see in the world. We can talk, teach, advise, suggest, and at times wear ourselves out spouting wisdom. But unless we are living, breathing examples of the change we wish to see, we will never be very effective.

This week, model the behavior you’d like to see in others. Wish your coworker would stop complaining constantly? Make it a point to consistently speak in uplifting, positive ways.

Want others to work proactively rather than waiting until the last minute? Demonstrate how beneficial this is by your calm demeanor and focused productivity.

Long to be part of a supportive, positive culture? Be a supportive, positive role model.

Teaching, advising, and lecturing all have their role, but if someone must choose between what you say and what you do, chances are they will look more closely at what you do. Do your part to be the model for change.
