Day 42: Surrender

Christi Hegstad July 24th, 2014

Always say YES to the present moment…Surrender to what is. Say YES to life – and see how life suddenly starts working for you rather than against you.

Eckhart Tolle

42 Days Of Yes!

Day 42: Surrender

Today was not what I expected.

I said YES to a long walk in an area I rarely spend time. I left my headphones at home so I could reflect on the 42 Days Of Yes while I walked. My mind was racing.

Wouldn’t you know, I bumped into a woman from my church whom I consider a spiritual mentor. Then, ten minutes later, I crossed paths with an older man I don’t know very well but who has a smile that absolutely radiates life. Moments later, I received a phone call from a dear friend whom I haven’t seen in nearly two years.

Needless to say, my walk didn’t go as planned – but the “detours” were joyful and appreciated. Which is one of the lessons 42 Days Of Yes has brought to the forefront: Savor the moment. Goals and plans are wonderful, but embrace the unplanned, too.

After my walk, however, my mind still raced.

A bit later in the day, the yearning for reflection remained. I knew I needed a quiet space for this and decided to visit a small chapel.

The chapel was silent, still, and beautiful. I knelt down and felt my mind continue to race.

And then I started to cry.

Not the dainty, movie-star, tears-softly-flowing-down-the-cheeks kind of crying. We’re talking the full-fledged, messy, wipe-your-nose-on-your-sleeve type of sobbing.

Where did that come from?!?

It seemed as though all at once, in that quiet space surrounded by stained glass and simple beauty, all my emotions came to a head. The abundant joy brought by family, friends, and meaningful work. The overwhelm of responsibilities and unexpected challenges. The excitement of all the possibility on the horizon. The sense of loss, especially for my Mom as we near her birthday. The mixed emotions that come with raising children: the absolute aweย in witnessing their growth and the woe in realizing how quickly it’s happening.

An immense gratitude for it all – to be able to experience life’s richness, the ups and the downs, the meaning and purpose.

Finally, my mind stopped racing.

****************************************************

Throughout the 42 Days Of Yes,ย I’ve made some incredible discoveries. I’ve met new people and reconnected with old friends, tried new activities and approached old ones with fresh eyes, done things I’ve wanted to for ages and attempted things I’d never before heard of. I also reached a significant personal milestone as a result of this project.

And the learnings have taken me somewhat by surprise: around topics like fear, surrender, and being and doing enough, for example. I won’t go into the hardest part of the 42 Days Of Yes, or the underlying reasons prompting it, or why I’ll never do it again (I’ll share all this at Spark). What I will say is that answers often come where we least expect them, the unplanned detours frequently lead to our greatest growth, and the truth inherent in projects like these remains constant: It’s not about me.

****************************************************

When I returned home, I pulled Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet off my shelf – a book that has carried special significance for most of my adult life. I randomly opened it to find this message:

You give but little when you give of your possessions.

It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.

…There are those who have little and give it all.

These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and their coffer is never empty.

Here’s to doing what you love – and giving life your all.

Day 39: Visit The Farmers’ Market

Christi Hegstad July 23rd, 2014

Value is not made of money, but a tender balance of expectation and longing.

Barbara Kingsolver

42 Days Of Yes!

Day 39: Visit The Farmers’ Market

On Day 39, my daughter and I visited our local farmers’ market. From the beautiful locally-grown produce to the heavenly-smelling baked goods to the live music, the experience made for a wonderful Saturday morning!

As a small business owner myself, I buy local whenever possible. I find this especially rewarding when it’s food: I grew up on a farm and love the philosophy of shaking the hand of the farmer that feeds you. The farmers’ market brings the community together – mind, body, and spirit – in a way few other events can.

As much as I enjoyed the market, the best part of this YES was spending time with my lovely daughter! Time passes so quickly; it seems like I’ve blinked and she’s grown from a curious toddler to an amazing and inspiring young woman. I treated her to a gigantic zucchini, from which she has created several meals and snacks. Amazing how far $1.50 can go with the right purchase. ๐Ÿ™‚

By the way, the quote above comes from Barbara Kingsolver’s outstanding book, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. If you’re looking for a unique memoir of one family’s experience of “living locally” for a year, you’ll find this book both informative and inspiring.

The Secret To Meaningful Work

Christi Hegstad July 20th, 2014

I recently came across an interesting report that attempts to show the most and least meaningful jobs, connecting them to compensation. For example, it asserts ‘attorney’ as a high-paying but low-meaning profession, whereas massage therapists receive low pay but find high meaning in their work.

My questions with their methodology aside, I struggle with reports such as these. They attract attention, for sure: Wouldn’t you immediately look to see where your profession lies? But they consistently seem to gloss over one critical point:

Our work is as meaningful as we make it.

I’ve coached attorneys who clearly understand and value their role in making the world a better place. And I’ve worked with fulfilled massage therapists earning six figures.

Meaningful work is not something bestowed upon us or only inherent in certain professions. We assign the meaning to our work. As Richard Leider and David Shapiro eloquently state in their book Repacking Your Bags, “Calling isn’t our work, it’s what we bring to our work. It’s not what you do that matters, it’s how you do it.”

You can bring more meaning to your work starting right now. As a leader, you need to help your team discern their impact as well. Here are 3 ways to begin:

1. Connect With Your End User.

If you aren’t able to meet the people you serve – which is often the case – you might wonder how you make a difference. “I’m just a number cruncher in a huge corporation” one new client shared recently. Consider how you might connect with the community you serve: Could your organization host a simple Customer Appreciation Night? Could you volunteer to write a series of articles for your intranet newsletter highlighting success stories of clients, then interview them? Could you bring customer examples or testimonials into your meetings as topics for celebration and discussion? Even if you don’t meet your service recipients in person, you can connect with them.

2. Know Your Vision, Mission, and Values.

I recently led an organization to design their Vision, Mission, & Values statements and witnessed the employees’ deepened connection in the process. They lit up when prompted to explore examples of how they improve the world – and how they could do so on a larger scale. “I’m SO EXCITED about OUR VISION! The POSSIBILITIES!! To CHANGE THE WORLD!” wrote one employee (capitalization and exclamation points hers!) on her evaluation form. Connecting to the bigger picture makes a HUGE difference!

3. Help Someone Else Create Meaning.

Sometimes we’re just too close to our own situation. But in helping others discern the meaning of their work, we often find our own. Win-win.

Last year at Spark we engaged in a powerful ripple effect exercise, where I showed our Sparklers (attendees) the 7 levels of people impacted by their work – regardless of role, title, or salary. One of the greatest ways to bring more meaning to your work lies in understanding your ripple effect, an activity well worth a bit of reflection.

As Martin Luther King Jr. stated, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”

When you know that, meaning and purpose at work – and in life – become clear.

Clarity Kickstart: Put First Things First

Christi Hegstad July 14th, 2014

And every day, the world will drag you by the hand, yelling, “This is important! And this is important! And this is important! You need to worry about this! And this! And this!”

And each day, it’s up to you to yank your hand back, put it on your heart and say, “No. This is what’s important.”

Iain Thomas

Coaching Tip for the Week:

When you arrive to work, what is most likely to get your attention?

If you’re like many, it’s the “reactive” stuff: email, voicemail, others’ requests.

This week, when it comes to your daily planning, practice what I call First Things First (I love Stephen Covey’s book of the same name). Before flipping on email or checking social media or entering a meeting, decide for yourself what’s most important. Identify your 3 most important tasks of the day – the 3 that, if all else goes haywire, must get done in order to move you closer to your vision and goals.

The act of moving from a reactive to proactive start to your day will work wonders for your productivity, leadership, and mood!

Day 23: Ignite A Big Spark!

Christi Hegstad July 8th, 2014

You have to find what sparks a light in you so that you, in your own way, can illuminate the world.

Oprah Winfrey

42 Days Of Yes!

Day 23: Ignite A Big Spark!

I’m not sure if it was the fresh air, the excessive coffee, the gorgeous summer day, or something completely unrelated, but today was a YES after YES after YES kind of day!

After saying YES to moving my office outside (not a difficult YES!), I focused most of the morning on Spark – our 2nd annual event coming up in October. An event of this type is a huge undertaking, and much of the groundwork has been completed for months.

But today needed to be a decision-making kind of day. With suggestions, enthusiasm, and support from an outstanding team, I said YES to:

In essence, even though Spark 2013 was absolutely incredible, I said YES to up-leveling the experience for those who attend in some pretty significant, meaningful ways. And as you can probably tell by my excessive use of exclamation points in this post, I am quite excited about it!

These kinds of YESes require me to continuously clarify my vision and then choose in its favor. Some of these decisions are hefty – but easier to make with that clear vision and purpose. I am thankful for today’s YES experience because in up-leveling the Spark event, I have up-leveled my vision as well!

Clarity Kickstart: Don’t Wait For Your Dream Job

Christi Hegstad June 30th, 2014

CLARITY KICKSTART: June 30, 2014

I don’t think of work as work and play as play. It’s all living.

Richard Branson

Coaching Tip for the Week:

Does your work bring you joy?

Perhaps the more important question is, do you bring joy to your work?

One of my all-time favorite professional development sentiments comes from the Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran, who wrote “Work is love made visible.” I recently experienced this with a store clerk who was so kind, gracious, and above-and-beyond that I found myself walking out of the store better and more inspired than when I entered.

When employees truly care about what they do and whom they serve – when they work with love – the ripple effect extends far beyond what we can ever imagine. This doesn’t come with the “dream job;” it comes by bringing your best self to your work every day

This week, whether you are in your ideal career or not, decide to bring joy and love to your work. Decide to inspire those you serve. Decide that your work matters.

When you bring the best of your whole self to your work, your family, and all of your roles, you realize – as Branson stated above – it’s all living.

Day 15: Expand A Vision

Christi Hegstad June 27th, 2014

If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.

Steve Jobs

42 Days Of Yes!

Day 15: Expand A Vision

Does your company have a vision statement? Could you recite it?

If not, you’re in the majority – more than 70% of employed adults cannot state their company’s vision when asked. Which is such a shame because, when well-crafted, a compelling vision ignites the passion, purpose, and productivity of a workforce in an intensely powerful way. This is true outside the workforce, too: Consider the vision Martin Luther King Jr. created with his “I have a dream” speech as an example.

Today I had the privilege of saying YES to one of my favorite activities: coaching a team to create their Vision, Mission, and Values statements. While I’ve facilitated this process for years, today’s was unique: the executive leadership team wanted all employees involved in the process. They wanted each voice to be heard and everyone to know their ideas matter. For a group this size, the request was quite extraordinary – and incredibly fun.

One of my favorite questions to ask in the visioning process is this:

What will the world look like once you’ve finished changing it?

When we applied the ripple effect to their vision, this exceptional group realized they could help eliminate poverty and unemployment, increase happiness and financial stability, and contribute to a positive, generous world. Their compelling vision expanded their sense of what is possible and transformed the way they think about their work.

If you don’t have a vision statement – either for yourself or for your organization – consider taking an afternoon to craft one. Place yourself 5 or 10 years in the future and imagine that everything has gone according to your greatest hopes and dreams. What will that look like? What will be different? How will you, your business, and the world have changed? Create as vivid a picture as possible and then, like a rowboat gently flowing down the river, let that vision pull you.

Day 10: Accept A Professional Challenge

Christi Hegstad June 21st, 2014

Why not go out on a limb? That’s where the fruit is.

Will Rogers

42 Days Of Yes!

Day 10: Accept A Professional Challenge

While at a conference years ago I heard Kate White, then-editor of Redbook magazine, compare taking risks to eating M&Ms: once you take one, you want more! How do you feel about stretching beyond your comfort zone?

There’s something about going for more than you think possible that makes you actually do more than you think possible.

Today I said YES to a business opportunity that simultaneously thrills and scares me. Have you had that experience where your heart says you can do it and make it extraordinary, while your head hasn’t completely figured out how? I’m going with my heart, and I’m not overthinking. Saying YES to this feels right.

The details are still in the works so I can’t share more on this professional challenge quite yet. Suffice it to say it could alter the trajectory of my business; it’s also the first step toward something that’s appeared on my Life List (a.k.a. bucket list) almost since I first wrote it. (Have you written your Life List yet? In addition to 42 Days Of Yes, that would be another great summer project!)

It could turn out amazing, it could go bust. But if you never try, you’ll never know, right? Sometimes the growth that occurs in pushing out of your comfort zone doesn’t depend so much on the outcome as it does in taking that first step and accepting the challenge.

Day 7: Thank The Local Above-and-Beyonders

Christi Hegstad June 18th, 2014

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.

William Arthur Ward

42 Days Of Yes!

Day 7: Thank The Local Above-and-Beyonders

A while back, I received a phone call from my local print shop shortly after sending them a large workbook order. Chad asked a few questions about my order, then said, “By the way, I noticed you spelled your name incorrectly on the front cover so I went ahead and changed that before printing.”

After asking how I had spelled it (I had omitted the “s” in Hegstad, if you’re wondering!), I thanked him profusely. His catch saved me money and frustration, and it’s not a detail I imagine a “big box” printer would have noticed.

I am so grateful for local small businesses who pay attention to details like that, who care about their customers and the communities in which they operate. While I hope I thank them each time they provide a service, today I said YES to sending a handwritten thank you card to a few of those that have partnered with me for many years.

I sent one to that print shop, thanking them for their high-quality work and friendly service. Another went to my website guru who, along with his team, respond quickly to technological details so I don’t have to think about them (a good thing). I felt compelled to send a note to our local coffee shop, whose staff could bring a smile to your face even before you’ve had your first cup. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The dedicated people at these businesses have helped MAP Inc. grow over the past 11 years and have brought joy and friendship into my life in the process. It felt good to stop thinking, “I should send them a thank you note,” and instead just do it.

Is there a small business you’d like to thank? Share your thoughts below, on Facebook, or via Twitter

Day 5: Practice Good Book Karma

Christi Hegstad June 16th, 2014

I enjoy sharing my books as I do my friends, asking only that you treat them well and see them safely home.

Ernest Morgan

42 Days Of Yes!

Day 5: Practice Good Book Karma

Today I visited the smallest, cutest library I have ever seen!

I’ve driven by this charming stand about a thousand times without knowing what it was. A few months ago, I heard about people building “leave a book, take a book” structures around the country and started to wonder…but I still didn’t take the time to stop and find out.

Until today! I said YES to the urge to check this out, grabbing a couple of novels on my way out the door just in case.

Sure enough, The Cozy Corner is a mini-library, right in the middle of someone’s yard. Lucky for me, the owner happened to be outside weeding her flower bed when I stopped, so I got to find out the story behind the brilliance. She loves books (instant friend ๐Ÿ˜‰ and works at a library in the Des Moines metro. She thought the mini-libraries were a great idea, and about 18 months ago her husband surprised her with one. When she first learned about “little free libraries,” about 2,000 existed; that number has quintupled since then!

The generous free-flowing of ideas is so important in our world, and free-flowing books support that – whether through local libraries, book exchanges, or adorable mini-libraries like this one. What a fantastic way for the owners of The Cozy Corner to make a difference and inspire others not only to read, but also to share!

What mini-step could you take to share your passion and make a positive impact on the world? Share your idea below, on Facebook, or via Twitter. Join us at Spark (click here) to see how 42 Days Of Yes all comes together!
