Redefining Courage

Christi Hegstad January 23rd, 2015

How courageous are you?

Sometimes when I ask that question, people respond along these lines: “Well, I don’t work a dangerous profession where I’m in the line of fire. I don’t take a lot of huge risks. I am not a very courageous person!”

If this sounds familiar, I encourage you to reconsider how you think about and define courage.

It takes courage to admit your mistakes and to work to make them right.

It takes courage to tell a group of people you’ve just met that you feel uncertain, lost, or that you are still wondering what you want to be when you grow up.

It takes courage to ask for help.

These are just a few of the ways I have witnessed courage in the past several days.

And here’s the beauty: Courage is contagious. Every time you display courage, you inspire others to be courageous, too. And each time you show courage, YOU become more courageous in the process.

COACH CHRISTI’S CHALLENGE: Pay attention today for examples of courage in action. Did a coworker speak up in a difficult situation? Did you read a heartfelt blog that showed the author’s vulnerability? Did a strong friend reach out for help? Watch for, and make note of, those examples that inspire you.

And make sure you include some examples of your own courage in your reflection, too! I’m willing to bet you’re more courageous than you think.

What examples of courage have you seen lately? Share your thoughts below, on our Facebook page, or via Twitter!

Significance: Your Work Matters

Christi Hegstad January 19th, 2015

CLARITY KICKSTART: January 19, 2015

Coaching Tip for the Week:

Have you ever made a purchase from a cashier who obviously disliked his work?

On the flip side, have you ever purchased from a cashier who clearly loved what he was doing and went to extra measures to brighten your day?

Regardless of your title, role, pay level, or tasks, here is a universal truth: Your work matters. What you do – and the manner in which you do it – makes a difference.

This week, strive to be the best employee, business owner, volunteer, stay-at-home parent, or whatever your current profession. Conduct yourself as though your work matters, as though you have the power to brighten someone’s day or make a positive impact simply by the way you carry yourself today.

Because as Martin Luther King Jr. also wisely said, “No work is insignificant. All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance.”

3 Common Goal-Setting Mistakes (And How To Fix Them)

Christi Hegstad January 15th, 2015

 OPENING PARAGRAPH / STORY

Here are the top 3 goal-setting mistakes I’ve witnessed lately among leaders and executives – as well as strategies for fixing (or avoiding) them:

1. The goal is too vague. Fuzzy goals lead to fuzzy results. If you want to reach new heights, get as clear and specific a picture as possible so you know exactly what you’re moving toward.

Along with specifics like a time frame and measurable success points, also consider how you will feel upon reaching your goal. Will you have more energy? Feel more confident? Then, start cultivating those feelings now. Don’t wait until you reach the goal before you experience the joy.

(If this seems too touchy-feely for you, give it a try anyway. You might be surprised at your results.)

2. The goal is boring. I don’t know about you, but when I hear the same most-popular New Year’s resolutions among Americans (lose weight, earn more money, etc.), my energy instantly drains. How boring! If your goal doesn’t energize you and motivate you into action, you need to set a new goal – or at least play with the wording.

The telltale signs of boring goals: the word “should” is involved, someone else has set the goal for you, or the wording is plain and devoid of any meaning or enthusaism.

Ideally, your goal will delight you. Compare “I’ll lose 20 pounds” to “I’m excited to reach my ideal weight of X and feel healthy, vibrant, and abundantly energetic!” Your words matter.

3. The goal is out of your circle of influence. I once coached an incredibly successful executive who was experiencing great discontent among her team. She wanted to set a goal like, “My team all gets along.”

While reaching a goal – especially a Bold Goal – is a phenomenal experience, there’s something even more important at play here: the person you become in the process. Your transformation will

Making Work Meaningful

Christi Hegstad January 12th, 2015

CLARITY KICKSTART: January 12, 2015

“Although the enthusiasm, energy, and positive attitude of a good leader may not change the content of work, they certainly can make the context more meaningful.”
Jim Kouzes & Barry Posner

Coaching Tip for the Week:

How meaningful is your work?

“I enter data into a computer,” a burned-out workshop participant shared. “How can that possibly be meaningful?”

Here’s the deal, friends: Meaningful work isn’t something given to a designated few or awarded only with certain titles or roles.

You bring the meaning.

A great way to start: Bring your team together with the sole purpose of sharing stories of satisfied clients, values in action, ways they’ve experienced their work making a difference. Connect each person’s role to the “end user” to show how work matters.

I recently facilitated this type of discussion with a leadership team struggling with high turnover and even higher disengagement. As members started to share stories – making connections between what they do and how their clients’ lives improve as a result – the energy lift was palpable. They now begin staff meetings with someone sharing what I call a Meaningful Moment.

This week, bring meaning and purpose to work. Call to mind your own Meaningful Moments or, if you work with a team, do this as a group. Work is so much more enjoyable when you remember, vividly, that what you do matters.

Intentional Imbalance: Your New Quest

Christi Hegstad January 5th, 2015

What does a “balanced life” mean to you?

What if I suggested you forget about balance and strive for imbalance instead?

Several years ago, around the time I started setting an annual theme, I listed my various life roles and was astounded by the sheer number of them. Seeing them on paper, I realized not all of those roles held the same level of importance to me. Mom and business owner were (and still are) among the top; others carried less weight.

I experienced a defining moment then:

What legacy do I want to leave?

What if, instead of spending time and energy in all of these roles all the time, I focused on the ones that matter most?

What if I intentionally imbalance my life in favor of meaning, purpose, and significance?

This week, as we embark on a new year, I encourage you to engage in a similar exercise. What matters most to you? What purpose are you here to fulfill? What legacy do you want to leave?

Then, intentionally imbalance your work and life in favor of meaning and purpose. Be o.k. with letting go of the trivial to focus on the important. Define your legacy, then bring it to life – and work.

When You Don’t Reach Your Goals, Part 2

Christi Hegstad December 17th, 2014

Even the highest-achieving goal-setters fall short of their aim from time to time. In some cases, you can easily pick yourself up, brush yourself off, and move to the next goal. But as I mentioned in Part 1 of this series, sometimes the consequences are high, such as when your job depends on your successful goal achievement. What then?

When you set a goal and don’t achieve it, here are some things that definitely will not help: blame, excuses, cover-ups, denial, dwelling. Not only do these responses reflect negatively on you, they disrupt your integrity and stunt future goal achievement.

Instead, be honest. Debrief with the questions I shared in Part 1, to learn from the experience.

Share with your supervisor what you feel you could have done differently, and ask for her suggestions as well. Enter the conversation with a game plan.

Evaluate your strengths and how (or perhaps, if) they come into play with your goals – and how you could bring those strengths more to the forefront.

And, of course, pick yourself up, brush yourself off, and move forward. As you do so, keep these tips in mind:

Setting yourself up for success early in the goal-setting process is especially important when the stakes are high. Start by breaking your goal into sub-goals, milestones, and consistent actions.  In my coaching work, I often help clients set one-year goals, which we then break down into quarterly, monthly, weekly, and even daily segments. It’s difficult to know on a Tuesday in January when action will make your December goal a reality, but it’s easy to see what action on that Tuesday will help you hit your weekly milestone.

Make sure to gain your supervisor’s input early and frequently. Just like you wouldn’t want to hear about a performance issue for the first time at your annual review, your leaders don’t want to be surprised without time to help you course-correct if necessary.

Shoot for big wins early in the game. When you kickstart into action, you will gain momentum quickly and be less likely to feel the need to scramble later.

Most importantly, line up your support. Often an objective coach, in tandem with your supervisor, can provide the guidance and resources to help you kick your goal into high gear.

For example, one of my executive coaching clients was responsible for increasing sales 20% in one year – an incredibly lofty goal in her department and industry. Part of her felt invigorated by the challenge; part of her freaked out about actually being able to achieve it.

She hired me early and we created quarterly, monthly, weekly, all the way down to daily actions needed to stay on course. We examined her Success Stoplight, eliminating tasks she did not need to continue. She was able to exceed the goal while improving her work/life balance and keeping meaning and purpose at the forefront. Whether you hire MAP Inc. or someone else, get a certified coach in your corner. You will be glad you did.

As a recovering perfectionist, I understand that setting a goal and not achieving it is, well, not fun. But it happens, and like most un-fun experiences, it usually prompts significant growth.

Learn from the experience, set the stage for success moving forward, then grow forth!

What Mountain Have You Climbed This Year?

Christi Hegstad December 16th, 2014

A courageous client recently embarked on a challenge – both physical and mental – that most of us will likely never experience. The email I received from her afterwards, in which she talked about clarity, adventure, and confidence, was absolutely exhilarating. She ended with this line: “I did not come down the mountain the same woman that went up.”

What a great metaphor for life.

We’ve talked a lot at MAP Inc. this year about pushing past your comfort zone, saying YES to healthy opportunities, and trying new challenges even when you don’t know exactly how they will turn out. It can be scary, exciting, thrilling, nerve-wracking. You might fail – and you might succeed beyond your wildest imagination.

But you will not come down your mountain the same person who went up. You will have grown, gained courage, and probably found strength beyond what you thought you had.

Celebrate that! Celebrate all that you’ve accomplished, all the “mountains you’ve climbed” this year. Celebrate YOU, and know that what you do makes a difference.

Coaching Tip for the Week:

We’re just a few weeks away from a new year. How do you plan to make 2015 an extraordinary year?

This week, daydream about this time next year. What do you want to say about your work, leadership, and life that you cannot currently say? Jot down your ideas, then turn the most important ones into actionable goals.

Your future self thanks you!
