Top 5 Leadership Books Of 2015

Christi Hegstad January 5th, 2016

This article was first published by the Des Moines Business Record.

Do you keep a book log? It can prove quite an enlightening way to learn about yourself and your “seasons” over time. As I look through mine from 2015, I’m struck by the themes that stand out: Apparently I had some learning to do in the areas of vulnerability, resiliency, and comfort zones!

I’ve read a lot of excellent leadership books this year (and a few not-so-great ones, too), but these five top my list:

Quiet Leadership by David Rock

I first learned about Rock’s work while enrolled in my coaching certification program years ago and have been a fan ever since. He takes the fascinating, yet somewhat overwhelming, field of neuroscience and provides practical application to work, leadership, and life.Quiet Leadership offers an excellent framework for developing others by helping them think differently and from new perspectives (a key tenet of coaching, by the way), as well as sample dialogues and supporting stories. A great resource for any leader, coach, or individual passionate about helping others grow.

Rising Strong by Brene Brown

It took me awhile to get into Brown’s work, but ever since I did (often to my dismay, as I write about here), I have been blown away by the power of her message. Her research has opened up a whole new level of conversation on topics like shame and vulnerability, both in the personal and professional realms. The ASPIRE Success Club has discussed her work in detail, with a resounding theme shared: “She makes me feel like I’m not alone in how I think/act/feel.” Proven research, powerful practices, and affirmation all in one.

The Happiness Of Pursuit by Chris Guillebeau

Every year, just as I’m finalizing my Top 5 list, a late contender sneaks onto my desk and subsequently onto the list! This year’s late entry is all about the power of quests – not goals, not adventures, but quests – and how they bring a greater level of meaning and purpose into our work and lives. Examples of quests highlighted in the book include: travel to every country in the world; take, edit, and publish one million photos; read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica in one year; produce the world’s largest symphony performance; and more. A great read as you’re considering goals for a new year!

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

I have been a huge fan of decluttering for years and have read countless books on the topic – but none quite like Kondo’s. While certainly a bit unusual in parts, I love the simple decision-making power in the question: “Does it spark joy?” I have actually implemented her methodology not only with physical stuff in my office and home, but also with activities, opportunities, even food choices. Her book inspired me to conduct a major decluttering of my bookshelves – something I’ve never had success with until now – so it definitely spoke to me!

Living Big by Pam Grout

If I had to describe this book in a word: INSPIRATION. From beautiful stories of human potential to quick-and-easy kindness ideas to the transformation that comes with dreaming bigger, bolder, and higher, I devoured this book and felt uplifted each time I opened it. I particularly loved the stories of people who felt uncertain of their purpose and unsure of their leadership potential but remained open to possibility, took steps in the direction of their passions, and made a positive difference for others. Her assignments with each section had me thinking differently – and bigger – as well.

What a terrific year for leadership books! Which ones would you add to the list? Share your suggestions in the comments below!

Your First Thought Of The Day

Christi Hegstad January 4th, 2016

“Wake up every morning with the expectation of having a great day.”

Andy Baggott
Coaching Tip for the Week:

What are your first thoughts upon waking?

I love this simple line from Baggott because it reminds me of an essential truth: We choose who and how we want to be in the world.

We can choose to wake up in the morning complaining of a poor night’s sleep, worried about the day ahead, frustrated that we’re not where we thought we’d be right now.

Or we can choose to wake up and think, “Fresh start. New day. No matter what, I am going to make it count!”

Which do you think will bring you more joy, meaning, and success?

(And which do you think will make you much more fun to be around?)

This week, wake up in expectationDecide right now that today, and every day this week, is going to be imbued with inspiring moments, meaningful conversations, thoughtful ideas. Choose to embrace the activity, breathe in the silence, and savor the moments.

We don’t always choose what happens in life, but we always choose how we will respond. This week, choose greatness!

Oh Well vs. What If (Or, Failure vs. Regret)

Christi Hegstad December 28th, 2015

“I’d rather have a life of ‘Oh wells’ than a life of ‘What ifs.’ “

Unknown

Coaching Tip for the Week:

What do your goals for 2016 look like?

I have mine in front of me as I write this. They are big, BOLD, and I am guessing if you saw them you would think I was a bit nuts. Usually that’s when I know I’m onto something good. 🙂

People often ask me why I’m so passionate about Big Dreams and Bold Goals. There are many reasons; for one, I believe we are much more capable than we give ourselves credit for.

Another is the truth of the opening line. I would rather try and fail than never try at all. I can recover from failure. I have a harder time recovering from the regret of being too afraid to try, to take a healthy chance.

This week, dream bigBelieve in yourself. Know that you have it within you to achieve great and beautiful goals. You don’t have to know the “how” right now (I definitely don’t with all of my Bold Goals!), but you need to believe in your ability to reach out to the right people for help, to learn as you go, to figure it out.

Don’t be afraid of big dreams. We need them in order to make the world a better place. And we need you in order to make the world a better place, too!

5 Lessons Learned In 2015

Christi Hegstad December 15th, 2015

What lessons did you learn or reaffirm this year?

I ask myself this question every year as part of my annual review. Although I frequently share lessons learned on my blog (today marks blog #358, in fact), it’s helpful and enlightening to pull everything together at year-end. Below are five lessons that stand out for me this year, plus the link to an article that expands on each. I share these with the hope that one or all of them serve you, too!

1. Keep It Simple.
My theme this year has been “Simplify & Elevate,” which has played out in everything from a massive office decluttering to more focused services to sharing simple but high-quality tools and resources like the Purpose Planner. Don’t overthink or make things more complex than necessary. Simpler usually equals better! For more on annual themes, click here.

2. Be Authentically Confident.
Dr. Daniel Amen writes about the 18/40/60 Rule: At age 18, you worry constantly about what others think of you; at age 40, you don’t really care what they think of you; and at age 60, you realize no one’s really been thinking about you all that much anyway! Believing in yourself and feeling confident in your authenticity can transform everything – your relationships, your success at work, your willingness to step out of your comfort zone. For an example of this (starring my big hair!), click here.

3. Embrace Vulnerability.
Hmmm….where to start with this one? We discussed the topic of vulnerability in depth in ASPIRE this year and the consensus was this: it’s difficult, it’s scary, but the results (inner strength, better relationships, emotional freedom) are so worth it. I am most definitely a work in progress when it comes to vulnerability, but the more I delve in, the more I am rewarded. To find out why this is a difficult lesson for me, click here.

4. Take A Break.
When you do what you love, “turning it off” can prove challenging. I often refer to this as the dark side of doing what you love – and I am only half-joking; it can easily lead to workaholism if not kept in check. Regularly taking an afternoon, day, or week off can restore your energy, enhance your creativity, reboot your passion, and keep you healthy. Be intentional about this by blocking time off on your ’16 calendar now. To learn about my experiment with this a few months ago, click here.

5. Be The Good.
Our world has a lot of issues, no doubt about it. But every day, I see examples of extraordinary kindness, generosity, help, and support. (I will be highlighting these in 2016 with a cool new project – stay tuned!) I choose to focus on these, as well as what I can do to make a difference every day. If you want things to be different, take action. Be part of the solution. Like Gandhi expressed, it starts with each one of us being the change we wish to see in the world. For more on kindness, positivity, and being the change, click here.

Like I shared in this week’s Clarity Kickstart, one of the best things you can do for yourself – personally and professionally – is surround yourself with inspiring people who will encourage, challenge, support, and push you. In addition to family and friends, I give thanks this holiday season to my coaches, mastermind partners, clients, and all of YOU! I appreciate your feedback greatly, as well as the many ways you are changing the world with your purposeful intention, positive action, and strong leadership.

Cheers and gratitude to you this holiday season!

The Dreamers And The Doers

Christi Hegstad December 14th, 2015

“Walk with the dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful, the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground. Let their spirit ignite a fire within you to leave this world better than when you found it.”

Wilferd Peterson

Coaching Tip for the Week:

Last week I attended several year-end events: our statewide coaching association’s party, our Acceleration Mastermind festivities, and our Bold Goal Celebrations with the ASPIRE Success Club. Each group was celebrating major achievements, amazing transformations, and unprecedented growth. My kind of week! 🙂

As I looked around the rooms at each of these back-to-back events, it struck me how it really takes all types to create flourishing success: big-picture visionaries and detail-oriented doers, fast-moving minds and methodical thinkers, energizing voices and calming presences, charismatic speakers and quiet confidence-builders. None is better than another, and we need them all.

This week, look at the people with whom you surround yourself. Do you have people in your community who encourage and inspire? Challenge and question? Push you to excellence and honor where you’re at in your journey?

If anything is missing, commit to filling that gap in your support. And remember to fulfill some of these roles for others as well. Your purposeful journey will be so much more fruitful – not to mention fun – when you work in harmony to build one another up!

Be Part Of The Solution

Christi Hegstad December 7th, 2015

Believe while others are doubting.

Begin while others are procrastinating.
Work while others are wishing.
Save while others are wasting.
Listen while others are talking.
Smile while others are frowning.
Commend while others are criticizing.

Persist while others are quitting.”

William Arthur Ward
Coaching Tip for the Week:

I love the writing of William Arthur Ward, and I return to this poem frequently – especially when things feel out of my control. It reminds me what is in my control, and that some things – my attitude, my next action – are always within my control.

This week, take an action that supports your vision. Even if it’s unpopular or contrary to what everyone else seems to be doing. Choose positive words, do excellent work, lead with genuine compassion. Expect the best from others, and give them the tools, opportunities, and respect to meet your expectations.

Remember – if we aren’t part of the solution, we’re part of the problem.

Let’s all commit to being part of the solution.

Creating A Flourishing, Values-Based Organization

Christi Hegstad December 2nd, 2015

This article was originally published by the Des Moines Business Record.

Most people who engage in coaching do so with a desire to improve themselves. Passionate leaders, however, typically strive to enhance their teams, departments, and organizations as well. Wanting to create an engaging and flourishing culture, strong leaders know that they set the tone and are always on the lookout for ways to do that effectively.

As you surely know, success leaves clues and we can learn a lot from the experience of those we admire.

In that vein, when it comes to coaching around organizational culture, I often find myself referring to the book that captures Zappos’ experience so well: Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh. It’s a terrific case study of an organization that strives to wow its customers with service, empower employees to make decisions and lead with confidence, and create a fun, engaging, even weird place to work.

How does Zappos do it?

It starts with one foundational piece upon which everything else is built: core values.

“Your personal core values define who you are, and a company’s core values define the company’s character and brand,” explains Hsieh, who goes on to share Zappos’ 10 core values:

  1. Deliver WOW through service.
  2. Embrace and drive change.
  3. Create fun and a little weirdness.
  4. Be adventurous, creative, and open-minded.
  5. Pursue growth and learning.
  6. Build open and honest relationships with communication.
  7. Build a positive team and family spirit.
  8. Do more with less.
  9. Be passionate and determined.
  10. Be humble.

Defining your organizational core values can prove the guidepost for decisions, actions, and commitments. Once clarified, you can turn to your values when interviewing new hires, planning development goals, conducting staff meetings, and more. They become the touchstone of your entire organization.

The fear, and unfortunately, often the reality is that values become simply another item to put on the website or employee manual and then forget. You must work the values into your day-to-day operations for them to have any bearing, and Zappos does a terrific job of this.

In probably its most notable example, after their first weeks of training, all new hires are offered $2,000 to quit. Why? “We want employees that believe in our long-term vision and want to be a part of our culture,” says Hsieh. Fewer than 1 percent take the offer, and Zappos also boasts a retention rate not many can match. To take a phrase from author and researcher Jim Collins, Zappos takes extra measures to “get the right people on the bus,” and it works.

The “fun and weirdness” value is expressed in a variety of ways, from themed costume days to hot dog socials to on-campus petting zoos. And I love some of their strategies for value No. 7, such as “The Face Game”: In addition to a login and password to get into their computer, the photo of a randomly selected employee will also appear on their screen, and they must identify the person’s name. Once they do, a profile and bio of that employee appears to share a bit more insight.

“In the end, it turns out we’re all taking different paths in pursuit of the same goal: happiness,” writes Hsieh. Creating a positive culture will benefit everyone involved as well as the bottom line, and it all begins with clear values upon which everything else is built.

Christi Hegstad MAP Inc HeadshotCOACH CHRISTI’S CHALLENGE:

What are your organization’s core values? How do employees fulfill them on a day-to-day basis?

If you can’t easily answer these questions, take some time this month to read Delivering Happiness.

Then, take the initiative to reevaluate your organization’s (as well as your own) values. Seek the necessary support to define clear, agreed-upon values that truly fuel your business. You can then design the path to ensure those values are honored and celebrated on a daily basis – and you, your employees, and your customers will reap the benefits!

Dr. Christi Hegstad coaches leaders and executives succeed in work that they love – and to help their employees do the same! Learn more at www.meaning-and-purpose.com, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/MAPIncFan, and via Twitter at www.twitter.com/DrChristiCoach.

How Much Do You Believe You Can Do It?

Christi Hegstad November 30th, 2015

“Not everyone needs to believe in your dream. But you do.”
Chris Guillebeau
Coaching Tip for the Week:

When I’m out talking about Big Dreams and Bold Goals, I also discuss how it’s not all “puppies and rainbows.” You will likely encounter difficulties along the way. Some of those difficulties might cause you to question your dreams, goals, and self.

I often share the story of Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. They created a book, then sought to get it out into the world. Publisher after publisher rejected it. Not just 10, not 20, not 50…150 of them

Their book was rejected 150 times before one publisher finally gave it a shot.

Consider how much they had to believe in their book to endure 150 rejections.

And just think: if they hadn’t believed in their book that strongly, we would not have the Chicken Soup For The Soul series that so many of us know and love!

This week, ask yourself: How much do I believe in this dream/goal?

If you feel you could persevere through rejections, challenges, and obstacles, keep going!

If not, there might be a host of reasons, but I suggest this: Reconnect with your ‘why’. Knowing the purpose behind your effort makes all the difference.

I, for one, can’t wait to see what Big Dreams and Bold Goals you’re about to make come true!

10 Ways To Rock The Rest Of The Year

Christi Hegstad November 29th, 2015

For Halloween a few weeks ago, I let my hair air dry and dressed up as a rock star who may be familiar to you (see photo). After years of not-fully-recognizable costumes, it was quite thrilling not to have to explain myself repeatedly this year! 🙂

Many of my clients set goals to “rock” whatever they’re pursuing: Rock the new job, rock the leadership role, rock the relationship. In the spirit of rockin’, here are 10 quick ways you can rock the remaining few weeks of 2015:

1. Choose one thing. Focus on one area that matters, and commit to one big, bold action. Decide to “go big or go home,” as the saying goes.

2. Honestly assess the amount of work time left in the year. Plan your goals and actions accordingly.

3. Take care of yourself. No one – not your clients, team, coworkers, family members, or you – benefits when you’re worn out. Replenish more than you think necessary.

4. Celebrate all you’ve accomplished. It’s likely more than you’re giving yourself credit for.

5. Engage your strengths whenever you can. You’ll get more done more quickly, enjoy it more, and make a bigger difference when acting in your zone of excellence.

6. Relax. Take a deep breath. Chill. Trust.

7. Ask for help. ‘Nuff said.

8. Decide your theme, set goals, and create action plans for 2016. You’ll be ready to hit the ground running!

9. While you’re at it, secure your support for 2016. Hire your coach, pay your association membership fees, and line up your Success Team now so there’s no floundering come January.

10. Lighten up. (Trust me, I had to do this in order to include my Halloween photo in this email! :-)) Decide what’s worthy of your time, energy, and concern. Make it fun. Enjoy making a difference. Laugh with the people you’re with while doing your thing.

How will you close out 2015 on a high note? Let us know below, Facebook, or Twitter. Here’s to your rockin’ wrap-up of the year!

Be Kinder Than Necessary

Christi Hegstad November 23rd, 2015

“If every single person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary – the world really would be a better place.”
R. J. Palacio

Coaching Tip for the Week:

What would happen if, at every opportunity, we were kinder than necessary?

What if we held the door for the next person – or held our tongue when we felt like griping?

What if we said thank you for the little things, as if they were big things?

What if we smiled at the stranger, even though we were tired and cranky?

What if we offered a hand, expecting nothing in return?

What if we counted our blessings for all that we have, instead of longing for what we don’t?

What if we were kinder than necessary?

This week, as we celebrate Thanksgiving here in the U.S., be kinder than necessary. All the time, all week long.

What if we all did this?
