When To Persevere, When To Quit

Christi Hegstad May 7th, 2025

A couple of years ago, I was scanning my ‘Books That Changed My Life’ shelf (we all have one of those, right?) and noticed something interesting:

Two books right next to each other (because I organize them in alphabetical order by the author’s last name); both with a black, white, and red color scheme; both made my top ten nonfiction list the years I read them (five years apart); both with one-word, four-letter titles that also rhymed

When I tell you how my nerd-heart started beating faster!

And obviously, since they were both on my shelf of honor, both already held a special place in my mind, work, and life.

But interestingly, they also seemed diametrically opposed to one another: One was called Grit, all about the power of perseverance, and the other was called Quit, all about the power of walking away.

As a coach, writer, and lifelong student of human behavior, my wheels were turning. I immediately wrote a brief blog about my discovery and a few points I found interesting. And here we are, two years later, and I am returning to the phenomenon that I haven’t really stopped thinking about since.

My latest Reading And Purpose article shares thoughts on both books, as well as five points I find useful when deciding when to quit and when to persevere with my goals. The article is available to the public – you can subscribe and read it here!

“How Do You Read So Much?”

Christi Hegstad April 16th, 2025

I am an avid goal-setter, but I don’t actually set a number goal for my reading. I did that once many years ago, and I became so focused on the number that I started losing sight of the purpose, the immersion, and the overall joy of simply settling in with a book, regardless of how long it took to finish or what number my tally would reach when I finished it.

Since that time, I’ve decided to be happy with whatever number of books I complete in a year. And since that time, I’ve consistently read about 100 books each year, and I am frequently asked how I read so much.

My latest Reading And Purpose article shares five practical habits that support my reading. If you’d like to enhance your reading life and are looking for fresh ideas, these may help! You can subscribe to Reading And Purpose and read the article here.

Reading Wrap-Up: March 2025

Christi Hegstad April 1st, 2025

In addition to the arrival of spring here in the midwest U.S., March has brought some fantastic reading, an incredible author visit, and a healthy blend of nonfiction and fiction on my reading stack. I’ve recently posted a few thoughts about each of the nine books I read this month, which covers quite a variety of genres and topics – hopefully a little something for everyone within this wrap-up!

Spring – along with life, work, and the world in general – has also brought an abundance of topics that I can’t wait to chat about with you in upcoming articles. We’ll be looking at how to practice active critical thinking, what ‘the good life’ means (which will also include a robust book flight), taking positive action in the world of literacy/books, and a variety of other reading- and purpose-related topics.

If you’re looking for strategies and supportive books to help you work with meaning, live with purpose, and achieve bold and difference-making goals, make sure you’re subscribed to Reading And Purpose! You can do so – as well as review my March reading wrap-up – here.

Book Flight: Purposeful Productivity

Christi Hegstad March 19th, 2025

“I long for a sense of accomplishment without also feeling like I’ve run myself ragged to achieve it.”

Checking things off the list can feel incredibly motivating and energizing for many of us. I know I’m not the only one who adds things to the list at the end of the day just to experience the satisfaction of checking them off!

And while our to-do’s (or Inspired Actions, as I label them) can keep us on the path to our goals and fulfilling our responsibilities, they can also begin to overtake us rather than support us. Task completion is part of productivity, but it’s certainly not everything.

That’s where I’d like to offer you some ideas. A significant aspect of my coaching work focuses on helping people be purposefully productive; in other words, achieving big dreams and bold goals – and even simply the day-to-day requirements of work and life – but not in a frenzied, frantic, exhausting way. I want you to experience meaningful success and to go to bed at night feeling like you’ve been intentional with your time, honored your priorities, and moved the needle forward on your highest aspirations.

In my latest Reading And Purpose feature article, I highlight three books that can also support you in this endeavor. I share a brief overview of each, as well as my top takeaway and a quote worth considering. At the end of the article, you’ll also find a few honorable mentions, too.

Key Takeaways From Meditations For Mortals

Christi Hegstad October 23rd, 2024

I went into Oliver Burkeman’s brand-new release, Meditations For Mortals, hesitantly curious. I loved his earlier book, Four Thousand Weeks – so much so, in fact, that it appeared in my top 10 of the year when I read it in 2022.

So although I knew I enjoyed his writing, I was unsure about two things in particular:

First, would it simply be a revisiting of Four Thousand Weeks? I can always benefit from a review of those principles, but I didn’t want to spend precious reading time at this moment (nor precious dollars for the hardcover release) if it turned out to repeat an earlier book.

Second, I wasn’t sure about the format. With the exception of my current book of daily devotionals, a one-essay-per-day isn’t my preferred way to read a book. With 28 entries, and mention of a four week reading experience in the subtitle, I didn’t know if this would work for me.

I’m pleased to report that both concerns were completely unfounded.

Burkeman’s unique voice makes this stand out in the vast sea of time management resources – and even from his own earlier works. And I read the entire thing within a few sittings, still easily rating it five out of five stars.

Key Takeaways From Unreasonable Hospitality

Christi Hegstad October 8th, 2024

“How do you make the people who work for you and the people you serve feel seen and valued? How do you give them a sense of belonging? How do you make them feel part of something bigger than themselves? How do you make them feel welcome?”

– Will Guidara

Although my experience working in a restaurant spans only a handful of years in college, I still found great value – for myself and my coaching clients – from Will Guidara’s account of his unique restaurant experience in Unreasonable Hospitality.
