Whether it’s the summertime humidity, vacation recuperation, or just a midyear slump, motivation and energy at work often tend to go into hiding this time of year. To help my coaching clients thwart this, I recently sent them a MidYear Success Supercharge exercise. One of the reflective questions in this program:
We all need a few tricks up our sleeves for those times we just don’t feel like doing what we need to do. Here are a few ideas to boost your – and your team’s – energy:
- Have a “Be The Buffalo” Day. One of my clients taught me this phrase, describing how cattle retreat from a storm but buffalo will run right into it – and thus get through it more quickly. Set aside a day or afternoon to be the buffalo: Turn off all interruptions, grab your to-do list, and go at it with an attitude of “let’s see how many I can knock off of here today!” It feels good!
- Change Your Scenery. Whether you take a walk around the block, take your department on an outing to the ball park, or take your company to volunteer on a Habitat for Humanity build, shaking up the routine and changing the scenery provides an instant boost. Even an old-fashioned ice cream social to close out a busy week offers a fun change of pace.
- Break It Down & Breakthrough. Take one of your big projects, create a Breakthrough Map (aka, mindmap), then put one small step per day or week into your action plan. As the tortoise taught us, slow-and-steady often wins the race. Be sure to celebrate some mini-milestones along the way to keep your motivation brewing and your energy high.
Of course, one of the best ways to instantly boost your energy is to surround yourself with inspiring, energizing people! You’ve got a brilliant opportunity to do just that at our 3rd annual Spark. Watch the meaning-and-purpose.com website for details and Earlybird Registration!
